I just started thinking - - - it would be interesting if Prince released a foreign language cd or even a just full song in French, Spanish, Japanese, etc .

Some artists like Ricky Martin, Shakira, J.LO , really broaden their audience by being able to appeal to listeners in other languages. Julio Iglesias for example has released songs in 7 different languages! Josh Groban has songs in Italian and he sounds like he is fluent in Italian when he sings (he isn't fluent even a little - he learns the sounds)

Prince has tried rap, country and so many styles -- It might be a unique challenge for him.

Perhaps a release of a cyber single or something.

--- I'm just rambling lol

Any thoughts?

I'm guessing he only knows english - but he has lived in France and Spain, so he might pick up a few words. He could write lyrics then have them translated into a language - then practice performing them. Maybe he could have a duet with someone. For someone who is passionate of freedom and pure artistry, this kind of project seems like it could test his abilities in every way.

He likes to play and alter his voice - this seems like a fun experiment.

The 'you' is plural - but I was always taught that you could use it when speaking to someone you've just met, changing to the singular 'tu' when you're better aquainted. You could maybe argue Prince is saying this when he just met the girl...

Interestingly, the French vocals in the song were sung by Marie France, the then head of Prince's tour wardrobe department. She was a middle-aged woman! I always envisaged her as quite young from the sound of her voice.

{Translation in brackets}
Vous etiez de l'autre cote de la salle
{U were on the other end of the room/hall}
Vous dansiez si fort
{U were dancing so hard/strong}
Je sentais votre parfum
{I could smell your perfume}
Votre sourire me dit que nous devrions nous parler
{Your smile told me we should talk}
Sexe et repos
{Sex and rest}
Baby
Je sais que vous aimerez ca
{I know U'll like that}
Vous n'y resisterez pas
{U won't resist it/to it}
Baby
Je vous enlacerai avec mes jambes
{I'll wrap my legs around U}
Baby
Pendant des heures je vais vous etonner
{During hours I'll astound U (?)}
Baby
Faire l'amour Faire l'amour
{Make love make love}
Nous nous rencontrerons
{We'll meet}

Do u recall if Marie France was in the "- Cherry Moon MTV interview special"?
I guess many of the fams on the org might be too young to have ever seen it. I remember Prince as acting very playful and sweet and was surrounded by the cast. He makes a point of asking one of the girls to talk about the movie and then prompting her 2 look into that camera - "that's the pretty one!" wink

you're right, the plural you in french can also function as singular for a more polite, formal conversation with a less familiar person

Wasn't the woman in the interview the actress that played Katy in the movie? It's been so long since I've seen it--don't quite remember.

Yes, that was Emmanuelle Sallet. Cherry Moon featured her acting debut. The Purple Rain DVD features several short behind the scenes looks at that film and Marie France is interviewed in one of them. I know she is supposed to have been middle-aged when she recorded the 'rap' in "Girls And Boys" but I think she is still quite young looking...

In this specific phrase, vous is referring to only one (female) person. If it were referring to more than one you, the phrase would be "vous etes tres belles" because in French the adjectives must agree in number and gender with the subject. Since it says belle (no 's') it is definitely one female. A singular vous is more formal, something you use for someone you just met, or to show respect. The other day I was actually thinking it would have been better if it had said, "Tu es tres belle" because it would have been more familiar and not so formal, and the rest of the French lyrics seem to be things you would say to someone you are more familiar with.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.
