Hey yall..hope this doesnt go unnoticed, or tagged as an irrelevant topic but i wanna know what yall think

do you think that Prince would ever go back to school for music and possibly try to earn his doctorate degree in the discipline? i think he could do it considering what he's capable of doing on his own...which might be a problem...cuz we all kno p answers 2 no one but himself or God...

so i wanted 2 kno what the orger thought about that
sorry...i was tempted to make another booty thread instead but i felt this had more merit.

I could well imagine P as a teacher in the category "pop music" at a music college or a similar institute, if it's focused on practical aspects (how to use certain instruments, work in the studio etc.)

But him earning a doctorate degree in "Musicology"? (no joke...) - hard to imagine. Being brilliant as a musician does not necessarily mean that you are able to work on music scientifically, doing research, writing publications and all these things.

My girlfriend studies Musicology, and she told me a joke which is common there: The difference between a musician and a musicologist is the same as between a lover and a gynecologist - one is capable of doing something, the other one knows something...

Nah, I don't think he'd even think of doing it. He's already a musical genius. What more can he possibly learn? Besides, some things you can not learn from a book, and his creative genius i sone of them.

Anyway, Prince was a good student by all accounts in school, unlike most rock musicians and has been quoted by his surrogates as saying that if he couldn't make it in the business that he would go to college for music.
I went to school for music, it's useless for the most part, totally impractical and a waste of time for a modern musician who wants a career as anything other than a teacher. Music school is mainly oriented to the classical tradition which is taught like math and basically useless, as alot of education is. Having said that, I am looking forward to the time when Prince is in his seventies and the world finally realizes how great he was and bestows honorary doctorates that many high achieving, uneducated men get. Ali got a doctorate, Duke Ellington,Cosby, many many others, Quincy Jones. So I'm sure he'll get something before he dies. Doing what he did is a lot more difficult to accomplish than what the thousands of numbskulls who go through music school deal with.

It doesn't seem likely that he would go back to school to earn his degree. I do think as mozfonky stated, that he may someday be awarded a honorary doctoral degree and become Dr. Nelson. However, I'm not sure if they only award doctoral degrees to those who don't even have Bachelor degrees...?

I'm sure no one cares, but I graduated from high school on birthday too!

Prince has, as any master does, amassed a great amount of knowledge just to be able to function at his level, those are factors, whether he learned intentionally or not is not relevant for what an honorary doctorate would be given for. The creativity of people like him is something that school honors in these situations, not the knowledge. Oddly enough, school does not generally foster creativity but gets in the way of it.

Lots of people do get doctorates like that, it really depends on the rep of the school as to whether it means anything. Mike Tyson even got a doctorate from some university, he got up and said something stupid like, "I don't know what I'm a doctor of but with all these fine sisters, I hope it's a gynecologist". Like I said, depends on the rep of the school, Harvard honorary doctorate would mean a lot more than one from the university of wenatchee.

Back in the day, I would have said that Prince was too much of a cool ass rebel and much too concerned with doing his own thing, all alone, to even think about learning about music. Over the years, he has definately proved that he loves all types of music, and he has done some cooky ass music sometimes to prove it.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him trying to learn more about music that he doesn't already know. He would never go to a "school" though. He's much too big a star. I can see him having a private tutor.
