Diamonds And Pearls Or The Symbol Album?

Which do you prefer?

Me personally...? I prefer the Diamonds And Pearls album. I feel this is a more concrete Prince effort, whereas the prince record is a filler album with many forgettable, lay-away hits and NPG tunes. And the 2 segues didn't add on to the hype either; they just created more confusion. Not saying that Diamonds And Pearls is Prince's best work of the '90's nor of his whole career, but it did have good commercial success with the 4 stand-out hits (the title track, Cream, Gett Off, Money Don't Matter 2Nite) and with the exception of "Jughead", a lot of enjoyable songs, hidden gems, and possibly on-their-way-to-becoming-classics.

My friend is in a dilemna about which album to get, and when I was asked, I said to go with Diamonds And Pearls, and he, knowing that I'm a member on the Org, said if I had enough second-opinions about it, he would probably get it. He likes the song "7" and says that that's his reason alone to buy the prince, but I can't honestly fully agree with him, as much as I like the song. So what do you guys think?

Definitely prince

Love 2 the 9s
The Morning Papers
Sweet Baby
Damn U
And God Created Woman

Some of the best songs Prince has ever written or performed. And then some other funky experimental tunes...

7
The Max
I Wanna Melt With U
Blue Light
The Continental
Arrogance
The Flow
3 Chains of Gold
The Sacrifice of Victor

And, of course: My Name is Prince & Sexy MF (not my thing, but many like 'em)

Diamonds & Pearls don't even come close, tho I love "Gett Off" and "Willing & Able"

Symbol. Both albums blow for the most part, but let's go with quantity.

Diamonds & Pearls sucks. Thunder is a ghastly overblown, 12-year-olds attempt at When Doves Cry. Cream is just plain cheese. Terrible record. Strollin' makes me cringe. Jughead, Daddy Pop... lets just say "what was he thinking?"

Symbol is far superior. Sweet Baby, Damn U and 7 are better than anything from D&P.

Diamonds and Pearls had the bigger commercial hits, but out of all of Prince's huge singles, I listen to them the least. prince is far from being one of my favorite Prince CD's, but it does have a few winners on it.

those 2 both hold my number one spot for favorite Prince album. diamonds and pearls is amazing and so is prince! Diamonds and Pearls is more funky, and O(+>is more heavy and kinda R&B. i love every single song on both the albums.both completely brilliant in my opinion.

I don't like D+P that much (with the exception of the more popular tunes), and songs like Love 2 the 9's, 7, And God Created Woman, and Sweet Baby make prince quite awesome

prince has its weak moments but it's a pretty great album overall, whereas Diamonds and Pearls is pretty bad aside from a few gems.

Unfortunately, I couldn't agree with any of the more of you. Out of 16 songs on the prince album (the 2 segues don't count), I only like a selected couple, like 7 and Sweet Baby, and tracks 2-4. I guess a lot of you might be thinking that because Diamonds And Pearls has a less amount of tracks, and you don't enjoy as many, it makes the album bad, but come on, the album's title suggests the archetype that the album is -- a small collection of diamonds (the stand-out, potentially good songs) and pearls (the "I'm-kinda-feeling-this-one-but-not-really" tunes). The reason why I like Diamonds And Pearls and chose it over the prince was perhaps because although it had a smaller amount of tracks, I liked the majority of the album. It has great, catchy numbers like Daddy Pop, Cream, Gett Off, and Walk, Don't Walk, and classic tracks like Money... and Willing And Able. The 2 that I dislike are Thunder and Jughead, but everything else has in one way or the other caught my attention. With the prince on the other hand, The Max, The Continental, My Name Is Prince, and Arrogance, just a few, for example, are poor fillers that sound like Prince was trying too hard in his effort make up the entire album. Like I said before, I feel that D&P was more of a polished Prince production whereas the prince might as well have been another NPG record with little-to-no-time to come up with inspiration and fill it with mind-boggling melodies and raps from Tony.

Anyways, I just want to thank everybody for replying in the first place. My friend will check out this topic with me in a couple of days, and say, "See, I didn't need any second-opinions about getting the prince because I was going to anyways". Well, maybe he'll get D&P sometime in the future anyways...

Ya gotta get the 3 Chains of Gold video -- or else the TV special he did back then (begins with "The Ryde Divine") -- or The Sacrifice of Victor -- these are all great complements to the prince album.

'Love Symbol'

Don';t get me wrong,I think 'Diamonds and Pearls' is a very good album, but 'Love Symbol' is much more aggressive, more funkier and much more eclectic.'D&P' is a good pop album, but it's not very experimental or deep. It's really just a collection of fun, catchy pop tunes.Nothing wrong with that,I just prefer 'Love Symbol'.
