Tough because D and P was a better album and brilliantly marketed but Symbol had better songs that will stand the test of time. The title track of D and P was a great single but its damn near unlistenable now. How could the same man who wrote Adore write that syruppy crap? And, of course, way too much Tony M. Mr. M is on the Symbol album too (4 minute rap on "My Name is Prince"...the song is NOT called "My Name is Tony") but 7, And God Created Woman, Damn U, and a few others belong in the Prince cannon and are stronger than anything on D and P. D and P flows better but Symbol is like finding these brilliant gems in the middle of a pile of horse crap.

Gotta go with Symbol...the parts are greater than the sum.

I love Thunder, D&P, Cream (oh and how!) and Gett Off, Money Don't matter 2night, Insatiable and Live 4 Love. But the album as a whole needs me to be in a certain kind of mood, which is not every day or even every week.
But I put Symbol on at least every other day. The whole CD in my opinion is amazing, and there are maybe 2 songs that I might skip ever. Granted, it was my first Prince album (march 2004, lol) but it's also one of my favourites. It just reeks of sex, mystique, mythology and beautiful weirdness, all qualities in Prince that I love.
So, in short, Symbol.

Without "7," "Sexy M.F.," "The Flow," or "My Name is Prince," I don't think I would have been interested in the whole thing. But the Kirstie Alley segues do get a bit irritating, at times.

I say no contest it should've probably been a double album cause everything is evenly inconsequential. but if i had to make a choice i would say the symbol.

I'll go with The Flow and add to the prince album, the segues aren't that bad and I can tolerate Tony M enough to listen to the album. Plus it has more funkier songs that are fully fleshed out compared to D&P.

Mediocre efforts at best....by Prince's standard anyway.

The presence of Tony M. alone mars both these recordings. Even considering the half-baked songwriting. But if you have to pick one (I mean, if you just have to) then I suppose 'prince' is the least offensive of the two. As several folks have mentioned, it flows better than 'Diamonds and Pearls' which contains some of the most God-awful music Prince has ever commited to wax.

I like D & P but I love prince. As stated, it does flow nicely and to me, it's funkier than D & P. I don't care for the segues but you can't mess with Damn U, Love 2 the 9's, And God Created Woman and 3 Chains O' Gold.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

If I was playing the cd's for people who don't like weird or adventurous music, I'd choose Diamonds & Pearls. It's much easier to listen to.

But for myself I'd choose prince in a second.

Sexy MF
Love 2 the 9s
The Morning Papers
I Wanna Melt With U
The Continental
Damn U
7
3 Chains
Sacrifice

are all classics in my mind, but D&P only has

Cream
Gett Off
Push
Live 4 Love

prince blows away D&P. First off, it has less of Tony M. If it weren't for Mr. M, that album would be damned near perfect.

D&P has crap like "Jughead" and the lame T-Rex rip off "Cream". Oh, and friggin' Tony M is all over the damned thing! Nearly every track! He completely ruins "Live 4 Love", "Push" and "Willing & Able", which would have otherwise been great tunes.

symbol just.

I love the dated "d and p", but there are more killer tracks on symbol.

" The continental" "the flow" "the max" "7" "sacrifice of victor".....

Mind u, i switch off "the continental" when Prince starts rapping to Carmen Electra. But that track is one of my all time fav's.....

I'll have to say The Symbol cause "Daddy Pop" and "Jughead"can ruin a perfectly good cd.

I don't listen to either much but if your mate likes commercial stuff he'd be happier with D&P, if not the other would probably please more.

My vote (as if you cared) is for the symbol album) Granted MY NAme is Prince can wear on you songs like:

3 Chains O' Gold
Morning Paper
Melt wit U
Scrafice of Victor
Arrogance
God Created Woman
Love to the 9's

I would add The FLow (but that idiot starts rapping and ruins it for me)and Continental (hate the beginning and love the Carmen part)but they have some flaws..
