May U Live 2 See the Dawn

So have we lived to see the dawn yet. I know Prince made that song "Welcome 2

the Dawn" for "The Truth" CD but is that it. I thought maybe he would make a

major motion picture called "The Dawn" or on a smaller scale just a mini DVD

type of film. Perhaps his new found religion is the dawn but then he should

have said "May eye Live 2 See the Dawn"

At the end of the song 'Gold' doesn't is say "Welcome to the Dawn" at the end? Also I think this message was repeted in the Sleave notes to the "Gold Experience"

The line "Welcome 2 The Dawn" first appeared printed on the EP for "The Beautiful Experience".

The Dawn was closely linked with the name change and gaining freedom from the record company in the end. It sounds very deep and mysterious -- but nothing ever came of it!

--may u live to see the statues in snow boots!

--now we can all die happy!

p.s. it is kinda Vulcan -- welcome to the Dawn! I mean, we all want to see it again, or else we are dead or just in bed, and we miss it repeatedly. The Dawn could also be enlightenment!

--live long and prosper and may u live 2 to C the snow boots, at dawn!

Here's the scoop:

At the end of the credits to Purple Rain, as well as the liner notes to the album, the words "May U Live 2 See The Dawn" first appeared. At the time, Prince was planning a film and album to be called The Dawn, once he finished ATWIAD and the Under The Cherry Moon film. Big surprise! The project was put on the back-burner because, oh I don't know, Prince saw something shiny and got distracted.

Prince still liked the album title, and still planned to do an album with that title, so he continued to put "May U Live 2 See The Dawn" on just about every release he put out through the 80s and early 90s.

Enter the year 1993. Prince had announced on his 35th birthday that he is changing his name to prince . He once again begins assembling an album tenatively titled The Dawn, intended to be a double disc set. The EP entitled The Beautiful Experience is released, with liner notes stating "Welcome 2 The Dawn". Apparrently, prince has decided that his name change is a fitting time to unveil the whole "Dawn" project. The original version of the track "Come" begins with the words "This is the dawning of a new spiritual revolution". Many of the songs from this time period are filled with themes of death and rebirth, and the dawning of a new era. It was clear that prince was trying to set himself free from his past in every way possible, a new "dawn", so to speak.

Throughout 1993 and 1994, prince tinkered with The Dawn, sometimes dividing them into two seperate albums (known at the time as Come and Gold). As with many Prince projects, the whole thing evolves over time, with different track lists and what-not. Eventually, he would release much of the project on the albums Come (late 1994) and The Gold Experience (late 1995). Once again, The Dawn album title is set-aside.

After the recording of Emancipation in 1997, prince once again decides to focus on recording The Dawn, which has now become something of a Prince legend. It is rumoured that it will be his career-defining album (a brief snippet in Rolling Stone from the time-period features prince speaking of recording a track for the album. In the piece, the writer also refers to the rumour of this album's impact on the artist creatively). Shortly thereafter, a promo single is given away at Border's stores of the Emancipation track "The Holy River". The b-side is a track entitled "Welcome 2 The Dawn (acoustic version)". The notes on the back of the single state that the track's original version (i.e. non-acoustic) is from the forthcoming "joint" The Dawn (whether or not a non-acoustic version was ever recorded is unknown. This version of the song was included in his "acoustic" album, The Truth

During the promotional tour for this album, comedian Chris Rock interviewed prince for VH-1. Rock, an admitted hardcore fan, asks the artist if this is, indeed, "the Dawn" that he has referred to for so long. prince replies that it is his own "personal dawn". Obviously his marriage to Mayte, and freedom from his Warner's contract, were things he considered to be highly significant, and thus a new era was being formulated. Of course, prince moved on to other projects once again, losing interest in The Dawn.

At this point, its anybody's guess as to whether or not Prince will ever revist this title, and whether or not it will be as big of a deal as he has made out. Its certainly not unprecendented for him to re-use titles from scrapped projects (see Crystal Ball and Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic for examples). At this point, the legend is so big, that there is simply no way for the album to live up to its mythic status (I personally doubt that there are any real tracks that have carried over from the various permutations. Most likely, he's placed all the songs on other albums). So, it remains to be seen if any of us will "live 2 see The Dawn"

You're welcome! And interesting tidbit about your friend having a faster version of "Welcome 2 The Dawn"! That's the first I've ever heard of the "non-acoustic" version actually existing. Now, I'm dying to hear it!! Was it groovy??

So....anyone on this thread actually have a copy of this version?? Please give us details, if so!!

What JediMaster posted earlier is pretty much on the money.

I'll just add a few sidenotes...

There were a lot of songs recorded for the various versions of The Dawn that
Prince has started over the years. From what I've heard, it sounds like none
of the incarnations of The Dawn were ever finished beyond some early tentative
test sequencing, certainly nowhere near any finished projects. A lot of these
songs were subsequently used on other albums, but there are definitely a few
songs that have never been released still sitting in the vault.

One of these is the non-acoustic version of 'Welcome 2 The Dawn', which does
exist. From what I've heard, it's a totally different take on the song (like
the difference between the original version of Come and the one on the album).
I'm not sure that it's faster, but it does have a lot more instrumentation,
and it's a lot longer. The closest song to compare it with would be 'Gold'.

i remember the chorus being groovy..thats what we would dance too.....boris might be right, i dont recall it being a dance tune but i do remember "welcome to the dawn" being sung in a completly different way then the acoustic....i guess you could say it was a mid-tempo groove.....
