I don't get it either.
Slap ANY other male celebrity in one of his more flamboyant outfits and have them sing some of his songs, and everyone wouldn't even doubt that they were gay. Prince might be bisexual. And yes, it does not matter. BUT fans here get livid when EVEN the very notion is entertained.

Prince has always played with so-called contradictions society creates: black-white, male-female, straight-gay. In his career, he has often displayed both, that means both races (a black man with pale make-up making music with a white band), genders and sexual preferences, or at least he tried or pretended to do so. No matter what is private life may be (straight/gay), his message always has been that all of these things are images society creates, and discussing them just is an indication how society influences our free personality.
So, people, what are you talking about here? Maybe you should listen to your favourite artist more carefully and take longer time to think about what he has created.

So, people, what are you talking about here? Maybe you should listen to your favourite artist more carefully and take longer time to think about what he has created. TRC, LoveSexy, Dirty Mind--they all had their various messages. This is not about those messages, nor is it about his sexuality. It's about Prince fans insisting he is "this" way or "that" way, and any deviation or contemplation otherwise is harshly ridiculed. Let's face it, when we look at MJ--at least 50% of us say "he's a closet case". But when we look at Prince, who not only has feminine manuerisms, 99% of us refuse to accept the same notion. Albiet I'll hand it to the boy that his manuerisms have been butched up as of late--most fans will attribute this to the fact that he's just giving up the androgynous 80's act and being more "true". But what kills me is that most fans will be very hostile to the notion that maybe he's being less true and this new "butched" up pimp-omatic Prince is an act. Moreover, most fans would attack my assessment to his current "butchiness" with their own views. ANyways, Meow's point is "why isn't his sexuality ever permitted as dialogue?" It's often started and immediately brushed off as offensive speculation.

He's like a big bullshit artist when it comes to interviews. His answers are always cloaked in some type of metaphor that's deliberately misleading or a straight up lie. ESPECIALLY during that perious in his life. But androdgyny and dressing up in a feminine manner does not mean that he is gay. Hell, Brad Pitt appeared in a fashion magazine wearing dresses and skirts, and Nobody doubt's his sexual preference. But the point behind the thread is why is it that Prince fans are so hostile to the notion? . [Edited 1/19/05 5:13am]

This is not about those messages, nor is it about his sexuality. Sorry if I didn't express it clearly: Of course, these sexual aspects are by far not Prince's only topics/messages, his work is so colourful and has so much more to offer, but they are part of it. Androgyny has been part of rock since Little Richard, the Beatles and David Bowie. It does not mean that everybody is gay.
Of course, he did not invent androgyny (never said that), he is one (amongst others) who has played with it. And I also never said that it has anything to do with these people's sexual preferences. ANyways, Meow's point is "why isn't his sexuality ever permitted as dialogue?"
It's often started and immediately brushed off as offensive speculation. Of course, this should be a free place for everyone to discuss anything they like to discuss. But why so much angriness as in the posts on this topic? Concerning the fact that our man P dealt with the straight/gay thing so relaxed, I just don't get it why people here become so angry about it. For me, it doesn't matter if Prince is straight, gay, bi or whatever. If you are interested in it, feel free to do so, but I just can't understand the tone/bad vibe of the discussion.

There has never been even a gay rumor, about Prince with another man. Only "Prince is a faggot" jokes. And Bowie is another story for another thread. Goodnight, sweet Prince.

OK, seriously, I think you have brought this reaction on yourself. I mean this as helpful, constructive critism now, not just yelling at you. So... perhaps your post should have appeared in the "General Discussion" forum, and be titled... "Why do some fans find it difficult to entertain the possibility that someone they admire might be Gay?" and then use Prince as and example of someone whose sexuality has been doubted by some sections of the general public and media, yet when it is, many of his ardent fans jump to his "defence" as if being gay was a bad thing. If you want to get into an academic study, then other examples you might draw upon for research would be George Michael, Elton John and Freddie Mercury. Undoubtedly there were fans of these famous artists who, when "rumours" of their homosexuality can to light, would argue vehmently against it. Can you imagine all the people who, if told in the 1980's that Elton John was gay would say "Don't be stupid. He is obviously straight, he was married for goodness sake!". How wrong they were later proven to be when Elton admitted his sexual preference. As for Prince, I would say that with the obvious lack of evidence to the contrary, he is more than likely heterosexual. If he himself were to announce that he was gay I would be surprised but accept it as true. To be honest I would respect him less as all his songs, movies and activities in the public eye indicate that he is heterosexual and I would be angry at him for bullshitting us for so long and question his motives for behaving that way. It is for similar reasons that I have little respect for John, Michael and Mercury as they could have admitted they were gay sooner. I do understand their decision though as they were at the height of their fame in less enlightened times when an admission of homosexuality could seriosuly effect record sales and, therefore, livelyhood. Hopefully this has helped. Dee, an English, Lesbian, Prince fan of 20 years. P.S. Because if his association with Dr.Dre? Not that I'm saying Dr. Dre is gay or bi, you can't go on anything Suge Knight says. Anyway my rant: I think a lot of stupid people get easily confused about homosexuality (I don't really say gay becase I get a sense that the definition of that word is changing again in the urban vocabulary to a synonym for "lame". A lot of times when someone says "that's gay" they mean it's lame not literally being homosexual. Back to my point, stupid folks have a hard time understanding what homosexuality behavior actually is so let me give a little bit of lesson for all of those people: Wearing make-up = Not homosexual Taking a penis in the anus = homosexual Wearing "girly" clothing = Not homosexual Sucking penis and balls = homosexual Playing with effeminate stereotypes = not homosexual Having sex with someone of your same gender = homosexual. It's really not that difficult, I think the folks who try to associate these other things with homosexual behavior have to do that because they're in the closet and while they don't show it openly by like wearing makeup and crap they're actually bedding someone of the same sex. So in there mind they've perverted the true definition of homosexual behavior to not apply to what they're doing. In a sense they're deflecting, trying draw attention to an easy target so they can continue to live on the "Down low" or whatever. Bottomline, if you're not Fing someone of your gender and don't want to F someone of your gender you can do whatever the hell you want and you're not a homosexual. pretty simple.

If Prince was gay I'd be cool with it. I love Boy George and Elton John. But I find the attitude that "Prince must be gay", "Prince couldnt be straight", distasteful. Goodnight, sweet Prince.

i have always liked men looking pretty.in my teens i wore makeup to look like my idols{prince, boy george, ttd, milli vanilli,mj etc}.not for once in my teens did i entertain any thought of homosexuality by my appearance or those of my idols.a man wearing makeup does not spell gay he only looks pretty.believe me the gay men i know have all had very masculine and manly looking lovers.i think the old idea of dressing effeminate or looking pretty meaning a man is gay is all bunkum and worth nothing.
