Bought a bootleg in an official store?

Hi,

This week we bought a DVD at the local V&D store (large shop) named "Prince, The Homecoming Concert". The cover had a picture of Prince on it taken during the Nude-tour area. The DVD was published by Falcon Neuen Medien (German).

At home, we really had to laugh about the quality. The concert was filmed using ONE obscure camera (from behind the sound/mix panel). The quality is (even for an 1980's recording very bad). But then, seeing Prince with the Revolution (Miko, Mark, Lisa, Matt, Bobby) screaming and jamming for 60 minutes was kind of fun. Songs included Dirty Mind, International Lover, Lady Cab Driver, 1999, Controversy and How come u don't call me anymore.

For just 7 Euro's 60 minutes of fun and most important: it was sold in a LEGAL shop as a LEGAL product. So this isn't a bootleg review, isn't it?

cheers,
Marc.

It doesn't matter where you got it from, it's still a bootleg as it's an unathorised recording.

You can find bootlegs in independent record stores and 2nd hand record stores - not everyone who runs these stores are that knowledgeable on what is official and what isn't, either that or they don't care.

Usually these stores don't scan their products' barcodes or do inventory like that.

I imagine the receipt was handwritten.

I remember walking into an independent record store in the early 90s,and they had all these Prince bootlegs! They had copies of "The Black Album",the "Crucial" album, several "Lovesexy" concert albums...I don't even know if they really knew what they were selling, lol.Back then,it was much easier to find bootlegs.

Inderdaad een belabberde beeldkwaliteit , maar het geluid is best OK en wrede show , toch biggrin

Yeah , i bought that DVD too at V&D (Dutch Store) , started a thread about it

Really an appaling screen quality , but the sound is quite OK and the show is neat , right

eh... handwritten? Nope...V&D is a huge retail chain in The Netherlands with dozens of stores. This one has three floors and is very well automated smile

Isn't there something about The Netherlands having different laws from most other countries about bootlegs and such? I think there's an international law about illegal recordings, but The Netherlands doesn't respect it, god love 'em.

Actually, I think you'll find that this is a "legal" release, at least in Germany. Authorised is a different matter, and according to free trade agreements supposedly anything from one EC country is allowed to be sold in another, althoughthere iare caveats re. T%he Berne Convention and other international copyright laws. No idea how they got the rights to market it, probably some loophole. Unfortunately the quality is piss-poor - one of the worst PS jobs on the menu to rub out text I've ever seen, and they appear to have not bothered with any restoration. Plus the show is missing The Time and Vanity6 opening acts which are included on circuating boots of this show, in better quality.
I picked it up on eBay for about £3 just for curiosity sake, but it's not really worth that much!

Mrs. Doozer here...

I remember a few years ago (about 8 maybe?) there was a record store in San Antonio where we are that you could ORDER bootlegs from. They had a whole list of P bootlegs that you could special order for $20 or more bucks a pop. Ah, we were young and that seemed like a lot of money at the time. *sigh* Had we only known that store would soon go out of business and it would become much more difficult to get these rare recordings, we might have dug a little deeper into our wallets.
