Ok I know it may sound werid but "If I was your girlfriend" was always extremly sad to me. Just a man knowing no matter how hard he tried he could never be that close. I just hear increadible sadness in that song. I know I'm werid!

If you just listen to the lyric, you can tell this was his way of telling his son exactly what he would have whispered in his ear and personally trying to deal with the situation (if at all possible).
