I think its just typical Prince, in that regard. He can't make her love him, but he will still try to fuck her one last time

I was never overly impressed with Joan's version. Kind of boring IMO, but when I heard Prince's version, I nearly fell off my seat. It's amazing!

Prince does an excellent job with this song! His live performance on VH1 was excellent.

i'm really surprised. i have always hated Prince's version. i'm not a big fan of Joan but i definately like her version much more. quite a lot actually.
I suppose the only cover Prince has managed to do well is A Case Of U, which is a totally great version. Even though i adore Joni Mitchell. ********************************************

good god, for prince being such an awesome songwriter he sure does know how to miss the meanings of other people's tunes..... that beast is horrid.. i guess thats why i prefer osbornes' version of God....she told the story....prince's version is him screaming a point before thinking it through..... I agree that his "I Can't Make You Love Me" is horrid compared to the original. The same goes for Betcha By Golly, La, La,...Means I Love You, and every other cover he's put on a major album. "One of Us" is the one time he did improve the original and-- deny it all you like-- if you put the two on back to back in any order Prince's is much more powerful. The music and voice enhance the lyrics much more in his version. Hers is too subdued to make much of an impression beyond the words themselves. [Edited 2/11/05 14:22pm]

The first time I heard the song it was Prince's version so I just knew he wrote the darn thing, it seemed so tailor made for him. When I finally heard the original I thought it was the cover and somebody was butchering Prince's song.
Needless to say, I know better now, but still I love Prince's version more because he sang it with his soul!! [Edited 2/11/05 16:52pm]

one of the rare songs where i prefer the studio version to live. Love's no fun when the one you love don't love you.

...it sorta is live. I believe it was recorded during a soundcheck. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)
