I like it too, but unfortunately, the version on Emancipation is overproduced. I remember being disappointed, because I had already heard the Emancipation Launch Party performance and was really looking forward to the studio track. Unfortunately, the drums are overdone. He should have kept it simple.

Prince's version is amazing. I don't sgree what some of u are saying about his covers. The covers he has done live have been rockin' hard eg honky tonk woman/whole lotta love.

That's why they call it the prince treatment.

Also, the joan osbourne cover has the beat for 'love thy will be done'

I think princes version is weak.

I think the verses work very well, but in the chorus, he sounds 50 feet from the microphone and the power is lost. Sure he's screaching, but the power is sucked out. On this occasion, his voice doesn't seem upto scratch.

Also, the keys are far to 80s. Makes it sound dated.

Prince isn't exactly famous for doing justice to covers. Sure, there have been exceptions, but for the most part his cover versions have been a bit blah at best.

Except this one, I think. Joan Osbourne's version is alright, but there's no energy, no emotion to it. Prince YELLS his version out; manages to make his version sound more spiritual IMO.

What's everyones opinion of this?

Also -was it recorded live? It has that imperfect "concert" sound to it. hmmm
[Edited 1/14/05 16:53pm]

love the bit at the end when he roars "but he aint home he aint home na na na he aint home.no no no he aint home.pure class.

That part makes me clutch my chest. I love it. The song makes me feel warm and fuzzy, so I love it.

The "But he ain't home" line wasn't in the original version by Joan Osborne. Hers ends with, "Except for the Pope maybe in Rome." I've always wondered... did Prince intend that line to be a subtle criticism of the Catholic Church, or was he just trying to keep the rhyme going?

The lyrics are alright, but the original version is just too zzz

Prince added the "oomf" that was missing in Joan's version. nod

theres a subtle level of sarcism in the way she sings the song that is completley missing in prince's over the top take no prisoners version..i like them both but for sheer storytelling i prefer osbornes..

It's alright except for that godawful 'Just a slave like one of us' line. I also like the Martika thing better in the Martika song.

I love Prince's version. Actually, I didn't love it until I saw him do it live.

My first time seeing him was the Jam Of The Year tour in 1997, and although most of my memories of that concert are now kind of fuzzy, I will never forget the way he performed this song that night. He brought the house down. He was absolutely on fire, his voice and guitar screaming pure feeling. I couldn't believe the building was still standing when he was finished.

Oh, and I love how the album version starts with the drum track from "Love Thy Will Be Done." His version of that song is one of my all-time favorite outtakes. biggrin

That's my favorite aspect of it. I think its more poignant than "just a slob like one of us".

Personally, I think this is a great cover. I like Osbourne's version, but his is so much more anthemic. His is also a whole lot more ambiguous to its meaning, just because of the mild tweaking of the lyrics.

Man, I LOVE his version of ICMYLM!!! He took that song and totally made it his own. Its a soulful ballad now.

That having been said, I prefer George Michael's cover to either P or Bonnie Raitt's versions.

ummm...i shocked that you would think such....its a song about unrequited love and prince turned into a song about sex....simply by his vocal execution..but the words dont match and that contradiction ruins the song.....it is my personal belief that prince did not understand the meaning of the song..

i swear... hehehehe..

I think its just typical Prince, in that regard. He can't make her love him, but he will still try to fuck her one last time
