Dark and So Dark questions?

Do you consider Dark and So Dark two different songs or just one a variation of the other? And why?

Also, which do you enjoy better?

I'll start...yes, i do consider them different...there's a completely different vibe going on with So Dark. It seems so much more livelier than Dark. Even though the lyrics are the same, the arrangement on Dark makes it just that...Dark and gloomy. Reminds me of tripping over someone on a rainy afternoon.

That said, should I ponder Face Down vs. Face Down (Acapella)? Hmmmm.....

I love "Dark" because the song is dark, which goes perfect with the title. I hate the song "So Dark" because he remade it hip hop sounding.

I like them both. I would consider So Dark a remix of the original song.

'So Dark' is a remix of 'Dark', and a horrible one at that.

'Dark' is one of post-80s Prince's finest moments. Shame he had to ruin it on Crystal Ball - he should have given us a real 'bootleg' instead.

Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

the beatles would say, "Bitch"?

I totally agree with you. I rarely listen to So Dark. The purpose of the song was too sound gloomy and "So Dark" sounds too modern and sort of generic R&B.

"Dark" is definitely my favorite; I really like that song (then again, Come is one of my favorite Prince albums). I didn't feel that "So Dark" contributed anything of any substantial value as a remix.

I know I'm in the minority cause I'll take So Dark over the original any day.

my understanding was that So Dark was the version that was planned as the followup single to Space, but was shelved. Can someone confirm that?

I loved Dark. Until I heard So Dark.

Then whenever I listened to the version on Come again, it always felt like it was missing something.

I dig the more organic feel to the original, but there's something far more interesting and alive about the version on Crystal Ball.

I guess you could say that "So dark" is a remix of "Dark". If I remember it correctly, it has the same vocals, but the accompaniment is different. Instead of the original key, which I think was F major, the remixed version is in its relative minor key, which would be D minor. That is, Prince has kept the vocal tracks and put a new chord progression underneath. This kind of thing works because of the relationship between these two particular keys. It makes the melody notes sound different, and gives another "mood" to the song.

Another example of this very clever way of "remixing" is the "Mustang mix" version of "TMBGITW". The exact same thing: originally a major key that was changed to its relative minor.

Prince often re-records large portions of his "remixes", including vocals - as opposed to most other artists, who are usually not even involved in such affairs. For instance, I think most (if not all) of the "Purple medley" was re-recorded.

However, I must say that I prefer the original version of "Dark". It has more live instruments and feels more organic, and I also like the chord progression better. But musically speaking, I guess the remix version is a more accurate interpretation of the lyrics.

hmmm
