I have no trouble "taking the heat" but I do have trouble with a basic lack of respect. And with music snobs too, who think their opinion is worth more than anybody elses.

It's telling how none of those who mocked me before have come back to defend "Dirty Mind" or "Controversy".

I stopped reading here
With "Dirty Mind", outside of the title track and "Uptown" the rest is pretty non-eventful. [Edited 1/13/05 11:52am]

Come on, people -- Prince is full of songs -- well-crafted compositions.
Dirty Mind & Controversy are mostly just tunes -- "just jamming, y'all." Kinda like comparing R&B to Hip-Hop -- which deserves more respect? Don't let the sensations of the beat vibrations take over your body and over-rule your mind. Peace.

First of all, anyone who bashes someone for preferring a Prince album over another is an idiot. It's all still Prince in the end.
Second of all, I still think you're nuts for the comments you made. Calling Dirty Mind uneventful is just strange to me. Dirty Mind is raw, provocative, daring, ambitious, romantic, perverted, and just plain intriguing. The compositions here are so complex in the way they defy the boundaries of musical genres. Plus, The Kid is just fearless and inspired here. Prince fully explored his complex imagination and evolved his ability to create innovative hooks and themes on Dirty Mind. He just scratched the surface with Prince in comparison. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Just admit you were wrong for calling 'Dirty Mind' non-eventful.

Listened to Dirty Mind again last night on my personal CD player (always a better experience).
Still felt under-whelmed. Just plain old don't get it. Not one little bit. I wasn't just putting Dirty Mind down to make Prince sound better. I actually don't get much at all from Dirty Mind. God, I hate it when I feel like I'm missing out on a Prince record! Somebody let me in the club... or at least tell me what you get for being a member!

I'm sure there are Prince albums I don't like that many other fans worship. What I think got many people in an uproar was your initial criticism that 'Dirty Mind' was an unimportant Prince album in his career.

What an insult to Prince. if you say so, but you really can't separate one from the three. I think that's what he just did.

Just admit you were wrong for calling 'Dirty Mind' non-eventful. How you be 'wrong' about your own opinion? This place.

For me I'd put them
1. Prince 2. Dirty Mind 3. Controversy I think 'Prince' may be more consistent album than the others, though it's also played a lot in my house because my wife likes it more than the others. When it comes to Prince I'm careful to choose the right music to listen to when she's around in order to keep the right to blast Prince pretty much 24/7. Dirty Mind has some classics on it, but some tracks I'm not too hot on. Controversy is a real mixed bag for me.

He's contradicting himself when he agreed that Dirty Mind was a "groundbreaking record for Prince" and showed critics that he was "more than just an R&B crooner" (his exact words). That is the opposite of his other criticism of the album as non-eventful. Which is it?

Prince said that "the second record was pretty contrived. After the first record (For You), I put myself in a hole, because I'd spent a lot of money to make it. With the second record, I wanted to remedy all that, so I just made it a "hit" album. Thats not the kind of audience u want. They just come to see u when u have another hit." Prince wanted to go beyond the trendy pop audience of "I Wanna Be Your Lover". With Dirty Mind, Prince wanted to develop a loyal following. Prince said "I released that I could right just what was on my mind and I didnt have to hide anything." Dirty Mind is very liberating. Warner Bros even put a warning label on Dirty Mind records and cassettes, "Cantains language which may be unsuitable for some listeners." Prince answered the gay issue in "Uptown" with a firm "No, are u?" Dirty Mind has a rough sound, true to life. Head is one of the most funky songs Prince has made. Partyup-"Revolutionary rock n roll." Controvery is the first album that Prince started using his low normal voice on songs like Annie Christian. Goodnight, sweet Prince.

While I was reading I was kinda like to the thought of "Prince" being more entertaining than Dity Mind or Controversy
I have really only listened 2 Prince ONE TIME in my life until last year I bought it in like 1994 and moved on to 1999 right afterwards. I felt Prince was a boring record. It's very modest and low key. Safe. Like Around The World In A Day to me... Dirty mind is exciting, a wake up. Head, Dirty Mind, Partyup, Uptown and Gotta Broken Heart Again are the JAMS. The only song I dont really get in2 is "Do It All Night" sounds like sum one off bootleg, I would have preferred "Turn It Up" or Horny Toad. But anyway Everybody got they right 2 opinion, but Prince to me is way too safe and boring for me. I have listened 2 Come and New Power Soul much much more times than that album. I listened 2 Prince last year for the second time and..still I just cant grasp the hold of it. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.
