Here's my interpretation after being a Prince fan for 23+ years:
"May u live 2 see The Dawn" is in reference to the 2nd Coming of Christ. The reference first appears on the Purple Rain album and movie wherein are contained "Let's Go Crazy" which makes reference to Christ's return ("He's coming..."), the backwards message at the end of "Darling Nikki" which makes reference to Christ's return ("...cuz i know that the Lord is coming soon..."), and the song "I Would Die 4 U" which was written from Christ's point-of-view. (Side note: During the Controversy tour, Prince performed (er played) a song called "The 2nd Coming," and in the song "Controversy" Prince recites The Lord's Prayer wherein he states, "Thy Kingdom Come..." A year later, he releases the song "1999" which is very apocalyptic as well). Later, soon after Prince changed his name to , he started making mention of "The Dawn" and "Welcome 2 The Dawn" -- for him, his name-change was his own personal 2nd Coming. Anyway, I liked it better when it was about Jesus. The Dawn ain't here yet, people, but we'll sho' know soon enuff when it do happen. Peace. | |

I'll just add a few sidenotes... There were a lot of songs recorded for the various versions of The Dawn that Prince has started over the years. From what I've heard, it sounds like none of the incarnations of The Dawn were ever finished beyond some early tentative test sequencing, certainly nowhere near any finished projects. A lot of these songs were subsequently used on other albums, but there are definitely a few songs that have never been released still sitting in the vault. One of these is the non-acoustic version of 'Welcome 2 The Dawn', which does exist. From what I've heard, it's a totally different take on the song (like the difference between the original version of Come and the one on the album). I'm not sure that it's faster, but it does have a lot more instrumentation, and it's a lot longer. The closest song to compare it with would be 'Gold'. Thanks for the info, Boris!!! You da man!!!
