Ok, so I know this is an embarrasing question but.. How is the CD Parade (the motion picture soundtrack to under the cherry moon)? Is it funky? Can someone do a break down of the songs? All I know from the album is girls and boys and kiss.

dancerella: The CD, at least to these ears, is a sparse set, with some high-concept tunes like "I Wonder U," and schmaltzy-but-cool ballads like "Under The Cherry Moon" and "Do U Lie?" But it's got this avant-garde funk kick to it.
The heart of the CD is the "middle of the order," with "Girls and Boys," "Life Can Be So Nice," "Mountains," "Kiss" and "Anotherloverholenyohead," All of those tracks simply burn. Overall, in retrospect, it was a tremendously ambitious and forward-looking album and I consider it a classic and I consider it funky. But judge for yourself, because others here hate it. btw, this may get moved to another forum. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I would say that the only tracks on this album that approach "funky" are "New Position", "Girls & Boys", "Mountains", "Kiss" and "Anotherloverholenyohead". "Kiss" and "G&B" are not very indicative of what the rest of the record's like. There are some arrangements really busy with strings, flutes, etc. and some things are really stripped-down atypical Prince music (at least for that era). Probably best to preview tracks at something like amazon.com.

Incidentally, "Sometimes It Snows in April" is one of his most beautiful, moving tracks ever (IMHO).

All I know from the album is girls and boys and kiss. If those are the only two songs you know from the album, you are doing pretty good and you are not missing very much. I like those two and another one I like is "New Position", which is funky. You've have probably heard "Anotherloverholenyohead" and just don't remember it. It's OK but very forgettable. They used to play it on the radio all the time, mainly the 12 Inch (now that's the version you want). If you thought "Around The World In A Day" was a new Prince experience in weird, then you ain't seen nothing yet! This album actually contains elevator music like "Venus De Milo" (straight up symphony type classical instrumental...no joke), "Do U Lie" reminds me of Lawrence Welk singing and waltzing around with his young ladies. "Mountains" and "Life Can Be So Nice" are decent tracks but they have that same "weird" vibe that practically the whole album has except for "Kiss". This is the album that totally got rid of the majority of the fans of the "old Prince" forever. Andy is a four letter word.

I love this album so much. A lot of credit for the way it sounds should also go to Clare Fischer. The orchestral touches are simply divine.

Parade is a really difficult album to diffuse. The first four tracks are like experiments rather than fully fledged songs. They're all too short to really matter, even though i like em. From Girls and Boys onwards Parade feels more like a proper album though. With the exception of the two songs you mentioned Mountains and Sometimes it Snows in April are essential. Life Could Be So Nice has a great nagging hook that will stay with you forever and the rest is pretty good too. [Edited 1/4/05 15:42pm]

I liken the first four tracks on Parade to some of those medleys the Beatles did on their later albums.

I liken the first four tracks on Parade to some of those medleys the Beatles did on their later albums. I agree it's just WTF was Prince doing putting them all at the beginning of the album. I know they kinda fit together but its still commercial madness though and a real headfuck for the casual listener. I love Parade but it could've been a masterwork if he had added songs and changed the sequencing.

I love Parade but it could've been a masterwork if he had added songs and changed the sequencing. Parade isn't for the casual listener. Purple Rain and The Very Best of Prince is for the casual listener. Parade is for Prince fans that want to hear something really wild and unlike anything else he's ever done. I also feel changing the song order wouldn't work because that's the order in which the songs generally appear in the film. The album sort of tells the story of Christopher Tracy. Not that you would be able to understand the story without seeing the movie, but I think you know what I mean.

It's a great album. You know you've arrived when you can appreciate it. I won't get into whether it's a classic or not. You either like it or you don't.
Oh, and is it funky? Well, the only songs that would qualify are New Position, AnotherLoverHoleInUrHead, and Kiss. These are somewhat funky. The other songs aren't at all. [Edited 1/4/05 16:11pm]

Well I have a love hate relationship with that album. But I am happy getting any Prince CD becuase there is always the chance that if I don't appreciate it initally I go back and listen to it again and start really loving the songs later. So yes get it! I think alot of songs on that album have way too many instruments in it, it can sound way to cluttered at times. But the CD is totally worth it just for "Mountains".

I would imagine "Mountains" to be the biggest culprit of your criticism--Prince has two different drum patterns going at the same time towards the end--but I love it also.

Following the wildly successful Purple Rain, and lukewarm reception of Around the World in a Day, one would expect Parade to have gone back to the PR sound. However, like LoveSexy and SOTT, PARADE is an album unlike any other in the Prince catalogue. Taking the psychedelic vibe pervasive in ATWIAD and stripping it of it’s Beetlesche flourishes, replacing it instead with a neo-classical orchestral sound that is neither classical nor passively orchestral, Prince churns out an album that both pleases and confounds. At times richly layered and brimming with orchestral texture, at other times sparse and funky, and at other times configurations of all of these things, PARADE allows absolutely no middle ground to the listener—you either love it or hate it. Bump-and-Grind tracks like Girls and Boys, AnotherLoverHolenYoHead, Kiss, Life Can Be So Nice, are all dispersed between slow down-tempo gems like “Under The Cherry Moon”, the weird trippy workout “I wonder U” and the beautiful if not overly impressive “Venus De Milo”. Prince uses this formula in albums like “The Rainbow Children”, but unlike TRC, Parade Clocks in at less than 45 minutes and isn’t long enough to wear you out with it. I can’t guarantee you’ll like it—you may even hate it. But I credit Prince for writing an album that deliberately avoids living up to expectations, and completely skirts away from playing it safe. I love PARADE.

[Edited 1/4/05 16:11pm] Girls and Boys ain't funky? And Anotherlover simply "somewhat funky"? I can't quarrel with anything in your post otherwise (as if my opinion mattered . . . ) Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016
