If a lot of fans don't like Prince's 90s work

yet continue to stick around, what's keeping us here? Is it a psychological thing? I wonder about this...is it that Prince's live show is still exciting? What is it?

or it could actually be that a lot of us really DO like his '90s work, and even though some of us can acknowledge that his '80s work is what made him legendary and indeed may carry the most undiluted spark of his musical genius, those brilliant albums still and all get kinda tired to listen to after the 1,000,000th spin, and some of us have discovered that there's actually some interesting material to be had in his more recent output?

He played on TV last year with WENDY and people bitched about it. I mean, people had been clamoring for years that he REUNITE with the old band and then they ripped on how bad Wendy looked etc. If you can't be a happy Prince fan in 2004 then you can't be a happy Prince fan.

but you know most of the people who were criticizing the way she looked were younger people, ie idiots, lol, who either DIDN'T CARE whether the Revolution got back together, or didn't want it to happen. lol

you KNOW she wasn't WENDISH enough and it's because larry was using his telekinesis on her and it was all prince's fault because he wanted her to be less wendesque so as to fall into his grand scheme of upsetting us TRUE FANS. hmph!

To answer the question of this thread.....

I stopped liking stuff around Batman, and finally stopped buying stuff after Come (which I could never even listen to).

So you can count me as one of the poeple who "don't like his 90's work".

I came here about year ago mainly for the related artist message board, cuz I was getting all geared up for the Family Jamm.

THen in 2004 I saw the Grammy Performance and became intereseted and jazzed enough to buy tix for Musicology tour.... 2 shows.

And yes, it's the LIVE PERFORMANCES That still matter. I don't really listen to the Musicolog album,

I like alot of his ninties stuff but more so the eighties. I just thought he was getting kinda annoying in the ninties. So far I think from 2000 and on he is awsome again! Well with the exception of the Rainbow children wacky

90's material

Great Albums: Gold, prince

Good Albums : Emancipation, Chaos & Disorder

Tolerable Albums (with flashes of brilliance in them): TRC, Rave, Musicology, The Truth

WTF? ALbums: One Night ALone Piano, One Night Alone Live, NEWS, K-Sutra, Xpectation, the majority of the NPGMC Online stuff

If Warner Bros did anything for Prince, it was probably by forcing him to edit his stuff dishing it out. But I enjoy the high output and I would put up with the bad stuff, so long as the good stuff came out with it. But since the 90's you go for very long stretches of bad stuff just to come up on o.k. stuff.

I think Prince needs to release something that just makes everyone say "Holy Shit--that was crazy."

Even his wierd shit now sounds "been-there, done that"

Man, is that analysis ever wrong. Who did not call TRC a Prince masterpeice when it was released? The Truth and One Nite Alone are brilliant throughout and no one else could have made them. Oh well, I stick with my rule that says that anyone who starts a sentence with "What Prince should do..." has to be taken with a grain of salt - or not at all.

Music is like art... The artist didn't paint the picture for ME, he painted what came from inside.. If I like it, I'll buy it. If I don't, I won't. Sometimes we forget that a true artist isn't gonna worry so much if U dig it, but if it said what HE was trying to say the way he wanted to say it. If ya want nothing but mass-produced hits with no experimentation, start listening to the Back Street Boys or NSync.. they might be more your speed.

There aren't that many people who don't like the 90s stuff.

There are is probably a large slice of people (a majority most likely) of people who's opinion it is that Prince's output since X year hasn't been as good as that which came before - but there aren't that many people who hate all the 90s stuff.

Yup. It's on a scale:

Prince albums compared to, say a Janet Jackson album:

1) Prince = great , translates to Janet's really really sucks
2) Prince = good, translates to being much better than a Janet album
3) Prince = o.k., translates to being like Mozart's requiem compared to Janet
4) Prince = sucks, translates to being a better purchase than Janet's album

so the bottom line is that his bad stuff is still better than most people's good stuff--especially Janet Jackson

.

The latter is worse. In most cases, those individuals who are continually crapping on those who don't paint perfect pictures are providing compelling objective arguments. When those who don't paint rosy pictures can't come up with a good rebuttal they cry fam... I mean foul.

Huh? Prince is the best. NPS, boring songs: The One, Wasted Kisses ...Good songs:...eye like funky music, Come On ...Rave Un2 boring songs some but most are good, eg. life is a winding road, tangerine... D&P album, all good...Come, all good.....the problem with his 90's work is the language, it's english but it's off, and not easy to listen to if you like your books english better.
