20 years have past: "Prince & The Revolution 84" vs. "Prince & The New Power Generation 04"

The Revolution 1984 was:
Wendy Melvoin - guitar
Brown Mark - bass
Matt Fink & Lisa Coleman - keyboards
Bobby Z. Rivkin - drums

The New Power Generation 2004 is:
Mike Scott - guitar
Rhonda Smith - bass
Renato Neto - keyboards
Chance Howard - keyboards & vox
John Blackwell - drums
Maceo Parker & Candy Dulfer - sax
Greg Boyer - trombone

I like The New Power Generation definitely more than The Revolution. Which band do u prefer?

Yet, if it wasnt for the dismandling of Revolution there would be no NPG..think about it differently..

And yes (2 me)..NPG 04 is ahead of Revolution. He wouldve been so washed up if he still had them in the group.

come on now, the Rev. was the sheeyit. they did have some nasty ass funk for real. and a lot of times i wish they were still together. it'd be great to see what P's music would've evolved to. I mean, they were ahead of their time back then and if they were still together now? Good God...and right now music is pretty much up to date. oh i just noticed...revolution '84! oh yeah...they'd kick NPG's purple arses.

both...each in their own right.

The Revolution was like a schoolband that was propelled by succes but held their freshness, rawness and bold experiment. With a lot of feel.

The NPG is a group of excellent musicians who know they are. More clean. The experiment is more based on their technique. Maybe the words 'perfect salonband' come to mind.

Such different bands. The Revolution was so raw and hungry, basic riffs and sounds that worked at the time. The current NPG comes across as a bit self-satisfied yet undeniably talented with a clean, sharp sound.

I don't think the Revolution really taught Prince much, apart from some of Wendy & Lisa's input, he knew it all already somehow. But by adding new gifted musicians every couple of years, he's learned a lot plus it kept his energy and interest up.

The Revolution were great, but I think long-term it was good for Prince to change the band - it freed him to experiment even more.

But I miss that really raw sound - Prince should one day do a tour with just drums, bass and a synthesizer player.

Prince even said in a magazine a few years ago that no 1 band can do everything. He could never have put out CD's like D&P, TRC and TGE with the Revolution. I think he took them as far as they could go. The NPG is an all around better band

the revolution rocked like a hungry garage-band.
the npg are like snobby, old, smooth jazz wimps!
that is just my opinion and i have studied both bands extensively.
i used to look foward to every record, single, poster, video etc...that prince and the revolution had coming out.
everytime i hear he is doing something with the npg,i kind of yawn and look for something more exciting.just a personal preference.
in other words-the revolution were MY Beatles.the npg are like Kenny G.'s band, too soft for my dirty mind....the revolution whoop npg anyday o' the week.

I personally love the Revolution - their sound was so damn special... but I think we just have to leave the Revolution in the 80s - it's history. Sad but true...
But hey - he NPG clearly consists of brilliant musicians and they rock 2.

The Revolution without a shadow of a doubt. Raw and funky, such a tight unit that they were more like a gang rather than a band. With the Revolution I personally feel that Prince wass not so much the star attraction as with the New Power Generation.

In fact, when people ask what music I like I usually say Prince and The Revolution rather than strictly just Prince; if that makes any sense?!

That's tough. THe NPG is a muuch better band than the Revolution.

HOWEVER, the revolution songs where less standard fair and much more adventerous, me thinks. I think the collaboration with Wendy and Lisa really helped in in some ways.

Collaboraing with Larry Graham only cuased him to stop saying "pussy, shit, bitch, ho, f@ck, and muthaf@cka."

The Revolution kicks the hell out of The New Power Generation's ass. Personally, my favorite is the no name back up band consisting of Andre Cymone, Dez Dickerson, Dr. Fink, Bobby Z., and Lisa.

The Revolution was original and had fresh hungry musicians. This band is technically better with seasoned musicians from James Brown, Parliament/Funkadelic ,solo artist and a great session musicians.

But creatively the Revolution was more akin to what Prince was about.

I would have to go with The Revolution, although the NPG is quite a diverse band on it's own.

NPG no doubt better group of "seasoned musicians" but for my money Revolution was more well, revolutionary, musically speaking, and holds up better for me. I.E, more spins.
