Could Bobby Z or Sheila E duplicate the fury that is heard on Shhh and live version 2004 Shhh?

I'm sure Sheila could! smile

No she couldn't. Sheila never had that precision. It takes more than just quick hands to create the Michael Bland sound. As far as I'm concerned he's the drummer that had the most sound of his own of all Prince's drummers.

Oh. And my answer to the original question would be of course the LM-1. By far the best durmmer Prince ever had.

It's his original drum machine that he used most through the 80s. We old-timers are usually quite fond of that little machine.

Sheila no question.

I don't get what is so great about Bland or Blackwell.... they are just typical R&B/funk drummers. YAWN.

The words '...typical', 'John' and 'Blackwell' don't even belong in the same room, much less the same sentance.

U may not like him, rate him - whatever, but the guy is anything BUT 'typical'.

I think Shelia is a killer percussionist and timbale player but as a drummer she's nowhere near the level of JB. U ever notice that in each concert she did it was always the same drum solo?

JB looks POSSESSED on those skins, and technically and power wise, u can't mess wit da man!

IMHO biggrin

By the way, Happy New Year 2 all.

Bland had the most distinctive live sound ("Gett Off" with any other drummer? No.) and the most kick of any of his drummers.

Sheila was a fun second.

If Prince would stick to drums for a 6-month period, that would be my choice.
How much better could "Darling Nikki" or "Sexual Suicide" be?

Then, there's the question of who pounded during "Alexa De Paris"
I think it's Shiela. Then I think of "Dance On" How much of that was real drumming?

Also, supposedly, Shiela showed Prince the pattern to "SS"

so...

Sheila

PS. "2 Nigs United 4 West Compton" Prince or Shiela???

"Darling Nikki" had drum machines performing the fast parts.

Same solo or not, one of Sheila's best solos was on the Romance 1600 video. I still give my vote to Michael Bland he had amazing licks and was so damn powerful. I still have the sound of his drums pounding in my head from some of the small club gigs I seen him play with Prince. Anybody who just writes Bland off as a typical r and b drummer obviously hasn't tried any of his drum parts.

Aight.

How much of "Dance On" was real drumming? Just curious. No sarcasm on my part.

Live the main groove was real drumming with Sheila triggering the sound effects.
