Glitter, 8-Mile, and Purple Rain - A comparison

I think all these stories are very simular to each other when you get rid of the music, the scenery, the director, the plot, script, overall tone, and intended audience.

ALl three movies actually deal with very talented young and misunderstood protagonists who are seeking to make a better life for themselves.

In the end, only Billie (From Glitter) actually learns any real lessons, but all of these movies seek to enlighten us.

purple rain was a showpiece. it put prince over the top as a household name, and it introduced the world to the minneapolis scene (at least the scene he was in).

glitter was a poorly-done vanity piece made by someone who should have made her screen debut in a damn 'land before time' movie...though i did like ann magnuson's part in the flick, and that big-ass mobile phone she carried around. lol

i think of 8-mile as another vanity flick...eminem didn't need the exposure when it was released, that's for sure...but at least he and his people have the good sense to apply some quality control. decent cast, decent director, decent script, decent cinematography. he did it up right, i gotta say (even if they lifted the story from purple rain).

nodAnxeity, your comments were right on. When it comes to Purple Rain, there is no comparison end of story period.

What lesson are you referring to? She learns that Dice loves her even though he is controlling. If anything he learns a lesson I think.

I think Glitter is actually not that bad, definitely not as bad as everyone made it out to be. ANd Mariah actually can act. The writing was biggest problem, and that wasnt' Mariah's fault.

BTW, Jam and Lewis did most of the songs.

I would say 8 Mile is more like a cross between Purple Rain and Saturday Night Fever.

I would agree but I'd have to qualify that "great" acting in 8 mile as a relative greatness. It wasn't exactly Oscar worthy. In fact I'd rate the acting as average, subpar, and unforgiveable for the three movies in the order you listed them respectively. smile

Staying in focus with the purpose of this thread, none of those movies stand in up to the greatness that was this...

Glitter was a craptacular rip-off of Purple Rain. Mariah, you can't act, and your songs are insipid. Go away.

8 Mile was pretty much the same story as PR as well, but it was a halfway decent film (I'm not saying it was good, just that it wasn't the crap-fest that was Glitter). Emenim should consider more acting and less rapping.

Of course, we all love Purple Rain. It was innovative for its time, and featured one of the best soundtracks ever. I do have to acknowledge, in all fairness, that it has some major flaws as well. Most of the acting is pretty wooden, mysonginy runs rampant, and the film looks pretty damned dated. Still, its a solid movie, and it has a fantastic look to it. Its heads above the other two films, without a doubt.

Purple Rain, the original. The rest are merely rehashes of the same idea. 8 Mile to me is also too much like Rocky or Saturday Night Fever in terms of story.

Glitter teaches alot of lessons the other movies don't.

In glitter, Mariah shows everyone that as a woman, she can make it.

In purple Rain the women basically just whore themselves around and follow men who beat them. Wierd.

Mariah's acting is actually pretty good in the movie.

The songs are pretty good too, especially the 2 ballads, tghe remake of didnt mean to turn you on, and the rick james song.

The worst part was the writing/dialog and direction.

U are kidding right?

Mariah pretending to be bashful during the video shoot scene was truly aweful.
