I take it you've never seen Jamie Foxx when he did Prince around '91-'92 on In Living Color ("Butt Out Jeans"). That man had Prince hands down!!! worship

Oh my god, that skit was freaking hilarious! I think it came out like a few days after Prince's MTV VMA performance. Jaime Foxx did this mock Prince song, singing somethin like "bet your bottom dollar..." and was doing all these funky hand gestures while they played mystical sound effects.

It was a mock TV ad for "Butt Out Jeans." It was definitely funny, but for a good impersonation, Phil Lamaar kicked Jamie's ass.

and the best prince impersonation on teevee? phil lamarr on mad tv--jamie foxx's prince was okay but i loved phil's. he not only had the mannerisms down, but he had his voice downpat as well.

nod

No question. Phil was dead on. He had that deep/flat Prince speaking voice perfect, and was fucking hysterical.

And yeah, I was disappointed in the Prince Christmas Show. I didn't think Fred Armisen did a very good Prince impersonation. I completely agree with folks that the best part were the obscure name-checks. That gave me a little thrill. And DeNiro on the purple snow-blower was kind of funny. But overall: it was the first "Prince Show" I'd seen; I'd been dying to see one, and this one disappointed me. sad

Yeah the first two seasons were the best. I can honestly say that the cast with Phil Lamar, Deborah Wilson, Nicole Sullivan, Orlando Jones, and Artie Shaw was the fu-king best. They had this skit called "Cabana Chat???" and the two characters (the lady host, and the dancing boy) were great too. Those first years were cutting edge.

SNL saw it's greatest years from during the John Belushi/Dan Akroyd time. The absolute best years were definitly the Eddie Murphy years 1980-1984. For some reason Lorne Michaels hates Eddie Murphy, but in fact it was Eddie that did save that show from cancellation by having every kid in the world sneaking and staying up late to get a glimpse of "Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood"..Oh yeah Eddie was a big Prince fan.

You mean Artie Lange? giggle
Artie's now on the Howard Stern show, and he's about the best part of the show.

SNL is in a down period right now for sure but MAD TV has been in a down period since it first aired. That show has always been uneven as fuck. One good skit per show (if you're lucky) SNL struggles every few years due to losing cast members to the big screen. How many MAD TV cast members have gone on to movies?

IMO, MadTV has gone down since Nicole Sullivan ("Vancome Lady"), Alex Borestein ("Miss Swan"), Debra Wilson ("Whitney Houston") and Mo Collins ("Trina") left the show. cry

I thought after the whole "Ashley-Gate" dabaucle they'd go back to making people perform LIVE... as in "Saturday Night LIVE".

I think the girls were doing some lead lines on live mic's but the BGs and most of the instrumentation was totally pre-recorded.

That really p*sses me off.

The skit was funny but i don't know if that's the same actor who originally did P earlier in the year after the Grammy's. This guy does ok, but doesn't seem as good as the original actor, and he can't even compare to Dave Chappelle who still has my vote for best Prince impersonation!!

But do y'all remember the episode of Malcolm and Eddie when Eddie did his Prince imitation? That was gold!

Yeah, they were singing their lead parts live, but background vocals were straight up DAT. Their lip-syncing wasn't even believable.

those skits are funny, but that lady character is such a rip-off of justin bond's "kiki" character that it's not even right. no no no! but i guess if you're playing to the whole country on TV, you can get away with stealing a character that's only really well known in new york city....still...for shame!!!

...that said, i still gotta admit i cackle wildly at the cabana chat skits anyway. redface

i think fred armisen does a great job with the prince show sketches, but then again i just think fred a. is cool like that in general - he could do a skit where he's eating a bowl of cottage cheese and i'd probably find it wildly entertaining.

WHY WASN'T BEYONCE HERSELF (THE MUSICAL GUEST) IN THE SKIT???? It would have been funny even if they had Beyonce play someone else then interact with the Maya "Beyonce"

I guess people don't bother reading through the other comments on a thread before posting.

As I stated above, a (reliable) person on an SNL board I read regularly who works on the show said Beyonce was originally supposed to be in the Prince Show but was sick all week and didn't show for rehearsals so was then cut out of the sketch.
