Hmm..."Sheila E. & Friends, w/ Special Surprise Guest".. "Sheila E. Celebrates Life: Sheila E. and Friends w/ Special Surprise Guest...The Roxy Theatre, Los Angeles CA, December 12, 2004, Showtime 9pm... Unauthorized photography, audio or video recording prohibited.
Hmmmmm..... Anyone know more about this show? I copied the above info from Sheila's website, which I just visited for the first time in ages; it's on the introductory page. Of course, I'm wondering just who the Special Surprise Guest is; I find the prominent warning about recording to be a bit interesting. Could it be our very own bootleg-averse Prince? Am I a hopeless dreamer...or should I buy a ticket and go, just to be safe!? www.sheilae.com "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. I would go if I lived in LA with or without Prince but if the surprise guest isn't Prince she is using some underhanded tactics to sell tickets because everyone who read that immediately thinks it will be Prince and she knows it.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I wouldn't go as far as to say her tactics are underhanded. But I agree, most people will think of Prince First. Just like at the Family Jamm last year.
And just because it's not Prince, doesn't make it not a special guest. BTW: The recorders statement IMHO is because it wasn't said at the FJ last year all all kinds of things started to pop out of the woodwork and it is a benefit concert. She even asked those that did make boots to send a donation to her Foundation. (YEAH RIGHT) So, I think the disclaimer is appropriate. Peace **************************************************

i was at the show last night. i haven't been to a sheila e. show ever so i can't comment whether this was a 'good' show for her, but let me say this...i was disappointed. Wendy showed up and played guitar on kiss and for some reason mike tyson got on stage at the end. And that was it. Sheila didn't play any of her hits (which was a pretty lame move in my opinion...come on now). her pops and bros got up and beat the hell out of a lot of percussion for about 2 1/2 hours straight with no melody or singing. very strange the whole thing. sheila and co. don't strike me as the type to mislead fans. i did get the impression "someone" was a no-show. anyone else?

REALLY??? Can you give more details. I'm surprised you say she didnt' play any of her its. I saw her show this summer in San Jose and she played all her hits.... Glamorous Life (I don't think she ever NOT Play that), Oliver's House, Belle of St. Mark, Love Bizarre (she didnt' play that???).... etc.

She did play Oliver's House, Belle of St. Mark and A Love Bizarre within the first half hour. Wendy and Susannah joined in for 17 Days, Kiss and a bit of Housequake which was inspired and sung by the audience. Then it got weird...
After the 2.5 hour drum/percussion solo (sadly, the previous poster was NOT exaggerating) they did a version of Mutiny sung by an audience member who was fun and lively. Even Sheila's band looked really bored by it all. And poor Sheila...she had a look in her eyes that resembled being stood up on prom night, yet she soldiered/carried/dragged it on nonetheless; waiting for *something* to happen. And yes, Mike Tyson was grinding up against/behind Sheila after the ridiculous drum solos. Soon thereafter (and surreally bizarre) Nuno Bennencourt from Extreme got onstage. I left at that point. HOWEVER...Takumi, Prince's guitar tech was there and had things set up in the back. This was confirmed by a Roxy staff member who had been there since early in the evening. Very disappointing, nonetheless.

i agree with your interpretation. sheila and co. seemed to take on an almost apologetic tone about 1/2 way. what the hell up with the standup? i definitely do not think sheila the type to mislead anyone.

Hmmm. it sounds like the first part was the set she's been doing this year..... Love Bizarre. Oliver's House, Belle etc.
It sounds like from what you say, they were stalling hoping Prince would show (esp if his guitar tech was there, he MUST'VE been scheduled). I love Mutiny..... I wonder who it was that did that song? I bet that sounded great. The Family did an aweosme job at The Family Jamm. Was that song at least jammin' as usualy? How did Susunnah look? Still the short blond hair? Or is she letting it grow back out? I love her . And there was not even an instrumental version of Glamorous life?? A lot of times Sheila throws in bits of other songs while she's playing something else. And that seems so rude if P said he's show up and then blew it off. What is his problem? well if it's true that Prince stood up Sheila E. he owes her as well as Los Angeles some type of remuneration. Sheila didn't make any money on that gig...only 449 people capacity in the roxy @ 20 apiece doesn't leave much room for profit after you pay that 10 piece band! if true, most highly uncool move on Prince's part.

It was a random audience members who sang Mutiny. It seemed like the night going to turn into Prince-karaoke, as Sheila was encouraging audience members to take the mic.
I don't think Sheila intended to mislead anyone. That's not her style. But when she came out in her Morris Day outfit it was obvious she was clutching at straws at that point. And the night became increasingly uncomfortable. I felt like I needed a cold shower when I got home...it was bad.

She did that at the Family Jamm to poke fun at Morris who didnt' show up. It was very cool back then, cuz she had his moves down cold. I wish someone would post a full review/setlist.

agree she intended to mislead noone. this gig was not about money. even if you sell out the roxy, after you pay for all expenses there is paltry little left. it was to be a night for her and it was but such a shame if prince did stand her up. ay carumba. it helps to talk it out.

Guess I'm glad I DIDN'T kill myself to make it to this show! WTF was Mike Tyson doing on the stage?!
Geez, wonder what happened?? Sounds like something went badly wrong. If it's true Takumi was there with the guitars, it sure seems like Sheila got shafted. We may never know...
