My favorite part is "Will we all fight, for the right to free?" and then he goes into the soprano "free-hee"...

So good. The concept of freedom is as important to the Prince canon as individuality, multi-cultural inclusion, and the love-sex-god paradigm. I consider this song to be ESSENTIAL prince.

The emotion. The perfect lyrics. Wow.

I've always viewed it as the precursor to the song 'Purple Rain', and like 'Purple Rain', it's probably the weakest moment on its respective LP.

You know, at that time I thought it was just a "we here in the US have it so much better than the guys in the USSR" type of song.

Hard to tell what he really meant, no? Can be misinterpreted significantly, don't you think (e.g. blacks should not become complacent, it was a hard fight to become free... or on the other hand should not complain too much, at least they are now free)?

Be glad that you are free... Of course, since the time of enlightenment this has been the central message of the "free" world...

As short as it was, I think "Free" sounded wonderful on the One Nite Alone...Live CD. Obviously this song turned out 2 have such an important meaning years after he recorded it.

I like the ONA version as well, I think it was good from Atlanta 85, but he dropped it later in the PR tour. Yeah, the rehearsal version was cool, but was botched halfway through. I am not sure where else he covered this song...anyone know?
