im from australia and just wondering who the majority of prince fans in the states are. to me it seems most of them are the R&B crowd.. which to me if thats true makes perfect sense even if i myself am not a big R&B listener
as he does have alot of the motown sound in his singing

though in australia every R&B fan ive met dislikes him
even if i give them a taste of something like
"shh" from the gold experience..which i dont think is hard to like if your into R&B.

the only people ive ever convinced that he is 'ok' is the people that like the 80's disco funk sound


dont get me wrong i dont run around trying to convert peoples music tastes, just the ones who give me shit while i happen to have a few prince cd's in my car

musicians...artist...children of the 80's ...people who admire driven creative people...people who recognize genius...the list goes on and on...

Well...myself i'm almost 30, married, work in Children's Services for the state of MO...i don't listen to any other R&B type music except for Prince and the Time...my musical range is from Prince to extreme death/black metal. Talk about a range : P

I think the majority of his American fans that remained with him after "Purple Rain" up to the present are the adventurous listeners who like to explore several genres of music.

i agree with the words used to describe his listeners.. and have always thought along the same lines

ive always 'liked' to think (but seen otherwise at times, which is normal) that the majority of prince listeners come from a kind of artistic crowd. a crowed thats open minded and not afraid of a little free expression even if it means comming accross in an odd or unusual way


maybe its better to start a new listing but i dont see the question that important to me so i wont..

What's great about being a Prince fan is all the diversity in his following. Like myself, the musical taste of Prince fans runs the gamut. I can listen to 70's punk (real punk not what people are claiming to be punk these days) as well as classical music. Not only does diversity play a part in musical taste but it also plays a part in race, sexual orientation and religion. The great thing is that, I believe, Prince had this as a goal from the very beginning. He just wants everyone to live in peace and to enjoy life with music.

Every Prince show I've been to has had an incredible diversity in age, background, etc. From the old school R&B crowd to the Nascar pit crew (complete with trucker hat and mullet ). It proves my theory: No matter how hardcore/gangsta you think you are, you will be singing the "hoo-hoo-hoooos" at the end of "Purple Rain".

I don't think that American Prince fans are any one type of person. (Is anyone really one type of person?) Judging from the various "type" of people at Prince concerts I'd say it's hard to pin down exactly what a Prince fan (in America or otherwise) is exactly.

Well, I'm definitely not part of the R&B crowd. I tolerate the R. Kelly sounding stuff because I know there is usually an "EndorphineMachine" or "So Far, So Pleased" mixed in. That's the stuff I love.

well, i'm 15 and i love R&B music. but i have more prince cds than anything else (28!). I am more into 80s music than anything. i like the hair metal, and i like michael jackson and billy idol. I am pretty open to every type of music tho. Still, the american music taste range is going to be huge. And i agree that Prince just wants us to listen and love his music. We P fans tend to be more artistic and understanding of unique things. I go to a Performing Arts school, so i should know.

I'm an Aussie as well but I was lucky enough to get over to the states in May and June. I got to see 2 shows and an aftershow . The American people I hung out with at the shows were very cool obsessive people just like me, but I have to admit that there were a lot of "mainstream" people turning out to see him (you know, mid 30s young couples who work 9-5 weekdays and spend their weekends keeping their lawn clean!) So given that the show is basically a "hits" tour I think that's fair enough. I think that's one thing us Prince fans have to realise. There are A LOT of people out there who like Prince but don't feel the need to buy every album and single and keep up to date on the .org or the club. I guess I'm like that with other artists. I like people like Chilli Peppers, Metallica and would gladly see them in concert if they came out here but I don't feel the need to go and buy everything and join the fan clubs etc.

One of the coolest things about Prince is the diversity of his fanbase. I met so many different people at the 2002 celebration, and 99 % of them were incredibly nice and friendly.
I don´t see a big difference between the US fans and non-US fans, sometimes the US fans seem to be a bit politer than non-Americans. And they seem to be more casual about Prince whereas the average European fan seems to know a bit more about Prince and black music in general...like Hip Hop and old school RnB and Soul, fans in Japan and Europe are much deeper into the whole genre and subculture. I am Turkish, born and raised in Germany, and a lot of the typical 80´s " Discoturks" are heavily into RnB, Prince and stuff like Midnight Star and the SOS Band or early HipHop
In the USA people tend to forget things a bit faster.
I think here in Europe it also has a lot to do with 80´s nostalgia...most Prince fans seem to have the usual suspects in their cd collection...the UK on the other hand is a whole different story, also because of the language and its black people..

these people obviosly dont hate prince yet they dont absolutely love him and his music...they simply just 'like' him..

but in my mind prince is an artist that if you truly explore and look into, you cant just like him..

I'm an all-music listener, but I'm really a "punk rocker" (I hate that word). Prince is a weird obsession for me, but I love him.

I am more in to alternative music and other music that doesn't really fit in to one category or any at all (like Prince). I do like some R&B, but not typical R&B. I do love art, music and I love Prince.
