musicology. a second look.

i listen to a prince album every mornin while i shit, shower n shave, and started listenin to musicology again and.....

it is fucking brilliant.

a million days is the greatest song about heartbreak ive ever heard.the marrying kind is incredible as well.musicolgy is funky as fuck, and call my name is beatiful.even "life of the party" which i loathed at first is great.(just have to fast forwrd past candys vocalslol) and every other track is fuckin solid.it deals with an incredible amount of topics and ends on the perfect note with reflection.

so lets stop liven in the past, and accept the new, more jazzy prince.

his best album in 15 years. and one of my top5 prince.

It is indeed a pleasant listen, but no top 5 material in my opinion. I do think that all of these tracks would have perfectly fitted on previous albums, so the tracks are certainly not bad. It is just that anything really new and mindblowing is missing IMO.

A very good, safe cd to play when getting ready. Neither anything terrible to skip, nor anything brilliant to put on repeat.

Welcome to the club my friend. I am glad that you are now enjoying the CD. I have tried to tell certain people on this site that Musicology is a very good CD but they want to live in the past as you say. Contrats for staying open to the experince and enjoying I wish you many more happy listens.

Peace

It was a grower for me, and at the end of the year, it was a very good CD. A lil mellow..but still nice, relaxing, funky, and coo.

i think what we have to appreciate is the fact that he dared to make an album that wasn't necessarily commercial, but returned us all to the fact that albums can be good because of their overall content, and could also be varied...i.e. you dont have to repeat the same formularic grooves for 10-12 songs; you don't have to make sure the tempos don't stray from radios accepted formula; and that the lyrical content is acceptable by the 'set' standards.
what he proves with musicology is that an album can be what albums used to be...a listening experience, that is not cookie cutter stuff, carved out to make record companies and radio stations happy. a true innovator knows how to writemore than one type or style of song. Variety is a good thing. all the songs on an album do not have to sound the smae - it's not written into music law.
Don't give me Usher - who needs three other artists to make a single - that's just record companies cynical outlook purveyed into making sure y'all buy the record; don't give me Fantasia, who has made sure that with the top producers , getting $50,000 per song, that they can make a hit for radio (and sure enough she sells 271,000 in her first week); don't sell me on Ashlee Simpson who can't sing, can't write, and spends most of her time ,when she is the studio, on her cell phone or ordering food..... the rest of the stuff that they call hits....well.....we have to stop this stuff.
as he says in the businesss magazine interview, this is why live concerts are taking a dive...nobody wants to hear someone lipsynch for a show, when they can see that on MTV. he proves that variety, in music , is certainly what keeps us going, and the lack of variety is what will kill the industry and the art form. the man is a true innovator and, even though we hear the word a lot, a genius.
let's hope the grammy's reflect this.

only a master of musical poetry can express the depth of a heart break with the simile above!
musicology is no doubt a metaphor for a new musical revolutiuon!

So many people drone on and on about how there's no "When Doves Cry" or "Little Red Corvette" on Musicology, yet 10 years from now these same people will be talking about how personal and beautiful "Reflection" is, and how clever and witty "Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance" is, how funky "What Do You Want Me To Do" is...etc, etc....

You've hit the nail on the head! Time will judge Musicology to be a great album. One of the best commercial albums in the last five.

Musicology is an okay album. Fleeting moments of greatness...

Give me On The Couch, What Do U Want Me 2 Do and ICP&C and I'll be fine without the rest.

Shoot me for saying this, but I think Rave is a much, much tighter album. I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore is better than anything on Musicology. As is Strange But True.

I said it from the beginning and I’ll continue 2 say it, Musicology is a great CD. It has a little bit of everything 4 the listener. Everyone really thinks his CD sold well because of his give aways; well believe it or not a lot of people went and bought the CD because they like the music on it. I have friends who do not care 4 P but went and brought this CD. I like the fact u can enjoy each song without skipping over some other song 2 get 2 the next song. Now that’s my opinion. Musicology have the whole industry talking about it every since it came out. Whether u like it or not, its one of P’s finest moments along with the year of 2004. They will talk about this 4ever just like SOTT, Parade, 1999, etc.

The thing about Musicology is, is that it a great illustration of the current music industry.

The songs that comprise the CD hold absolutely nothing new to Prince listeners.

It's positive reviews, critical acclaim, and celebrity endorsement have absolutely nothing to do with the music on the LP, but the promotional vehicles surrounding it.
