Howcome media won't play Prince?

For the past 9 years now Prince hasn't gotten much airplay.
1 of his tours was hardly publicised.

Mtv was supposed to honor P for one of their Mtv Icon specials.
This I find odd sinde he says Mtv hates him.

How about places like Europe and Asia.

Prince giving Musicilogy CDs complimentary at all his concerts had to do with why Musicology was on the billboard charts.

DO you all see Prince coming back commercially?

i know i dont want him to comeback commercially

though a little taste on the charts now and then would be satisfying

some of the songs he made 10 years ago would certainly
go well on the charts in this day and age

um...Prince has been all over the media in 2004!
Especially b/t feb and june!

So I'd say he got his respect!
Including the videos "Musicology and Call My Name" were shown enough!
On BET and Mtv Combined!

Because Clear Channel and others like it are running things now and Prince does not fit into their format.

The music industry is so saturated with all these teenyboppers and younger artists bombarding the music scene and selling out - it's gotten 2 the point where radio and TV stations are afraid 2 take chances with older, more mature musicians like P. It's all about the big $$$$.

I am sorry did I miss something?

Didn't MTV, VH1, and BET have a Prince special on at the same time year? Grammy Awards? Rollingtone cover? Entertainment weekly? Cover of USA today? Radio-now that is a different story.

I agree. Lets confine this discussion to radio and video airplay. Everything else is good.

I think the intention was 2 discuss Prince's exposure IN GENERAL. Yes, he had a big year in 2004 with Musicology and all, but what about before that? We live in an age where the younger artists are selling out 2 the younger crowds - and again - Prince being older, more mature, more talented, and more intelligent (obviously I could go on and on), sadly he doesn't fit anyone's "format". Radio/TV stations can't make $$$$ off artists like him and they're not willing 2 take chances IN GENERAL.

I mean I last really remember him thriving as Prince around 94/95.

And he hasn't been at a height commericially since Purple Rain.

Yes he's been on album covers. Has had specials although I missed them. But it still doens't feel like PRINCE the Purple One.

Atleast not in the US. While here he can do clubs and not sellout I'm sure his shows world wide are mostly in Stadiums.

In the 21st century we're supposed to have a new onslaught of artists.
Who do you think takes after him like he took from Jimi Hendrix and James Brown.

I agree with most of this statement. Older artists are the same age of the parents that goofy kids are rebelling against, and it's the goofy kids that drive the pop music machine. Songs with mature themes and messages don't sit well with people with short attention spans. Any attempt for Prince to get airplay on bubblegum pop radio stations will be met with resistance.

Fortunately, pop success isn't the only kind of success. Exposure this year has come from other sources. For instance, Musicology and especially Call My Name received significant airplay on Urban AC radio.
