my humble opinion as a music-lover is:
I do not like the music of Alicia Keys,Beyonce,Erica Badu,Common,Musique,
Millenia,Funky Bald Heads, any of the Blackshire boys,Larry Graham(love his music before he turned into a major wuss)etc...i could go on-my point is,
why would i want Prince to do another soul record?he has been doing the same soul record since 1996!enough already dude, don't turn into Larry or God forbid-
Angie Stone!just so ya know,i am a black-man,i love my soul records ,BUT,Prince needs to move on now,way too much "smooth jazz" lately.i am not even asking for
another purple rain or rock guitar album or anything like that,im just saying,
the last thing he needs to release at this point would be a soul record, the people i mentioned above and through-out this post seem to have a pretty big influence on Prince's music of late,if he's recording soul music right now,how much you wanna bet that it's gonna sound like most of the other bland, middle of the road, smooth jazzy, can't find a good snare drum sample to save their lives, wimpy, plastic r-n-b that is being forced on us now?

-----
Smooth Jazz is Kenny G. I don't think Alicia Keys, Erica, Common or Musique sound like Kenny G. The fact that you put in Beyonce in this group is even more disturbing.
Black Folks like soul music. Prince does this very well. Why not give the people what they want. I doubt if he will ever stop doing rock or funk but right now he has got a good run going. He should captilize on it.

you are correct, those artist's are not defined as smooth jazz, nor do i think they are.i just think their stuff is too polished,over-produced for my nasty taste.i want synthesizers squealing, drum machines humpin',prince screaming his ass off,i dont need anymore maxwell or d'angelo.

a new eclectic pop album would be interesting
if he just went all out
something not taken from the stash
something written from the mind he has now

i want more of those 'she spoke to me' jazz solos
i love that solo..right on 4:40
i wish he'd go jazz on an album sad
You saw the apple
hanging on the tree,
But missed the orchid
in your gaze

Well remember back in the day only Prince was during synthesizers squealing, drum machines humpin',prince screaming his ass off. I not sure I want to see Prince go back to that at his age but not to worry I as sure he will continue to mix up the styles of music on his CD's. I know we will probaly always get a good RnB ballad out of him.

Prince should not collaborate with anyone. It would take away from his creativity.

Forget the Soul record, I would like to hear a New Wave/Synth-Funk record.

headbang Heck ya!

There's nothing new about New Wave. falloff That idea is just as bad as purposefully making a soul record. I for one like it when he makes something that catches me off guard. Besides, great albums defy categorization.

I think I could dig a "soul" album. Just the licks of "Soul Man" in "Days of Wild" and the opening licks of the same song during the RRHOF performance make me yearn for a complete cover of that song. Prince has a good voice for it.

He should do an old soul song cover album...Slip som Otis and Sam & Dave and Wilson Picket and whatnot. He may not be able to do the songs vocals complete justice, however, musically, he can deffinately bring those songs new life.

This is my worst nightmare - Prince turning into an old crooner, sloshing out schmaltzy ballads and sickly sweet love songs one after another.

Call My Name was just too formulaeic for me, I didn't enjoy it at all.

scariness, dirtiness and overall taboos wear out real fast, especially nowadays. everything shocking in music that can be done has been done, ad nauseam. it's really hard to be scared or shocked anymore, thanx to the american media wearin out stuff.

Look, I for one do not care about what Prince should do. Just let the man do his own damn thing. If you like it, fine, if you don't, screw you.

Sure, I'd love to hear some more of that New Wave/Synth-Funk that he used to do, but I'm not gonna hold my fucking breath for it.

He should just do whatever his heart tells him and not get caught up by everyone's requests. Even if it is something as boring as N.E.W.S. or Xpectation or whatever else, you just gotta respect that and understand that that is where he's at. The man is getting older now, so I'm sure he'd like to move on to new territory anyway.

I mean, if you're so desperate for a sound that Prince had already done, then just go back and listen to what he's done that you liked. Purple Rain, 1999, Dirty Mind or whatever else you like are always gonna be around for you to enjoy. They're still great and truly inspirational and you get to reminisce Prince's good old days.

I think the Emancipation album was soul.
Especially the second c.d.

throw in a few from the first and third and you have a soul album.

I also find it funny that when he first started out, you would only hear his music on R&B radio. Sexy Dancer, I wanna Be your lover,do me baby, etc. etc.

But when he did Dirty Mind for his funk punk rock personality. it fell on deaf ears. The rock station ignored it. Now that his POP stardom is gone, it does sesm like R&B stations are his only outlet to the general public. I personally here Call My Name every single Day but once again it's only on R&B stations.

Cinammon Girl has Been Ignored by the rock/pop stations as well as MTV.

I not going to go that far (LOL) but she has kicked major ass with just two CD's Put on an incredible show. It just shows you that most people on this board don't know shit about RnB music.

i know plenty about "soul music" and what i am saying is that most of the so -called "soul music" they give us these day's sucks!
Al Green is/was "soul music".Beyonce is not "soul music",she is a revlon model!
gimmie something real, the plastic is getting old.Jill Scott is a fraud also.
i love soul music when it is done with some soul.
don't come half-steppin' with some weak-assed slow jam with a wah-wah guitar line and a fender rhodes keyboard with the latest hip rim-shot sample that you stole from a Roots cd.all the "soul music i hear these days sounds an awful lot alike...i'm just bored with that over-all sound i guesse.

I'm quoting myself here, because noone seems to get it... You're all talking about your own personal definitions of "soul", "pop" etc. as if they were some kind of indisputable truth... rolleyes

I mean, come on...do you really think that Prince would purposely attempt to make a "soul record"? And even if he did, what's to say that it would match your particular criteria for "soul" music?

Well I'll give to you for Beyonce. This girl should be modeling not singing but I don't get your hatred for Jill Scott. I saw her in concert. This girl can blow and more than hold her own as far as putting on a good show and she has really great lyrics. Something you don't see in RnB music these days.
