The Revolution got better everytime they played, and were disbanded at the top of their game.
The NPGv3.2 is so damn predictable. You always know where they're going to go, and it's going to sound, uh... like the last time they played that song. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

BLASPHEMER!!! Renato has to be the most boring musician in any of Prince's bands over the last 20 years. I rank him at the bottom of the list, down there with Tommy Barbarella and Philip C. Dr. Fink had mad skills on the keyboards. I seriously doubt Renato could play the solo from HEAD! Dr. Fink also and character and charisma... Renato put me to sleep during the interlude of the Musicology shows. Everyone left there seats to get more beer, or take a bathroom break every night during his interlude. No one walked out of anywhere, once Dr. Fink hit the keys! Lovesexy Funkateer

Maybe if what makes a band good and creative is a couple of half dressed chicks who can play guitar and keyboards, then yeah...Revolution wins. Otherwise, bother someone else with your argument. Who plays better drums...Bobby Z or Blackwell....Blackwell Who Plays Better Keys...Fink or Renato....it's close, but Renato Who plays better Bass...Brown Mark(on ya draws) or Rhonda....That's an easy win for Rhonda Lisa Might win versus Chance...but their positions rn't integral enuff to matter...plus that CHance dude gets on my nerves. Chance doesn't seem to have a purpose but to look fat. So Yes...Lisa Deffinately wins that one. Better rhythm...Miko or Scott...Scott wins...even without putting curtains on the brim of his hat. For the most part...the NPG musicians r older and more accomplished. There is no way the Revolution can win...they were a bunch of coked out kids....Yeah, they had energy and a great band leader...but that was it. Look at it this way. Would U hope that Prince and his band got better after 20 years...or worse. Anyone's band (who stayed in the business the whole time) would be better based on experience alone. Remember 20 years...that's a LONG time to be playing to end up with a band that's worse than when U started. PS: after I posted this I reliased Miko wasn't in the revolution but that curtain joke is too funny to take out. I'm pretty sure though that Scott can pummel those revolution guitarist. [Edited 11/29/04 23:50pm] [Edited 11/30/04 0:02am] NPG is great but you could duplicate their sound with any session player, you just couldn't do that with the Revolution, sorry you lose. P.S. Your Miko curtain joke wasn't even funny so you kind of lost twice. Plus if you knew what you were talking about you'd know that Miko WAS in the Revolution!! I have a Miko story!! I was at a gay bar in Oakland called THE WHITE HORSE. My friend was DJ'ing there. I saw this guy on the dance floor that looked very familiar. I couldn't stop staring at him. I decided to go dance next to him. Well as soon as I did that I realized who he was. I think he thought I was a freak because he got off the dance floor right away and left. Straight people go to gay bars too so I don't know why he tripped. Or maybe he is gay and decided to leave before getting discovered by other people. Whether Renato seems boring or not, his skills on the keyboard could match or surpass Fink. Go listen to Whole Lotta Love from the 2002 Celebration and listen to Renato and Prince play off each other. Plus remember, Renato's portion of the show during the Musicology tour was picked by Prince, it's not Renato just showing off. P.S. LONG LIVE THE REVOLUTION!!!!!

I don't know. I really loved DR. FINK but RENATO was off the hook on the Musicology tour. He didn't bore me. He was incredible!!!

I loved the Revolution as they were around when I was first discovering music on my own. I loved the NPG of Sonny, Tommy, Morris and Michael with all their shows at Paisley coming at the height of my party days. And I love the current NPG as they are P's first band that can capture the sound of any of his previous bands, and they are just so damn tight. It's been a wonderful 22 year ride following Prince and his bands for me, and I'm lookin forward to whoever he brings aboard the next 22 years. For all those peeps going off about the '86 tour Revolution - that wasn't the line-up listed in the q!! They had the horns and sometimes Sheila on perc) which made it a whole different expereience - and I agree they would definitely win! "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

A topic like this can be debated to death.
Older fans love the Revolution, the newer ones dig the talent of the NPG. Neither are wrong, just different tastes. Each one of these individuals are extremely talented musicians... yes, even Renato... But you cannot deny, especially to us that witnessed it first hand, that Prince had an INCREDIBLE CHEMISTRY with Wendy, Lisa, Dr., Bobby, and Brownmark. As great as the latest band is... they come off as more like hired hands, than friends that helped him get to where he is. He could've hired anybody for the Musicology tour. But only the Revolution created history from 1982 to 1986. spelling edit [Edited 12/2/04 9:18am] Lovesexy Funkateer

Which band do u prefer? IMHO, I believe that the NPG (both the 1992-1996 version and the 2002-2004 version) are a much better band than the Revolution. Not to diss the Revolution, but the NPG musicians are more polished than the Revolution. Now, I do believe that if the Revolution were still around, they would be a much better band. Come on, John Blackwell is probably the best drumme P has ever played with. Renato is also one of the best keyboardist P has ever had. Fink was great, but Renato has clearly had more training. However, it took P to make Renato funky. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

The NPG are obviously very talented musicians, and I thought the Musicology tour was great, but YAWNNNN! They are so boring!
The Revolution in all its incarnations were so much better for all the reasons everyone metnioned... the peronality, the songwriting, the attitude etc. And Matt and Eric's horn section was so much better than the overdone Candy & Company. Maceo may be a legend but the NPG horns are just tacky. And I just dont' get everyone going on about Mr. Bland.. he beats drums hard. Sheila is the best drummer of all, no question.

The current line-up of the NPG (and even the Sign O' the times /Lovesexy band) is what Prince wished the Revolution could have been.
Like others have already posted, the Parade tour is the shit!! But I think we overrate it simply because we are nostalgic for the Revolution and it was his last tour with them. Don't let fond memories cloud your intellect...you all know damn well the current NPG mops the floor with the Revolution. (Adisa goes to listen to Wembley, '86) I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

I think he took the Revolution as far as he could, but the NPG will always keep growing. Pound 4 pound, NPG 04' is the tightest band he's ever played with, but we've been there before with him. The Revolution was out there, looking and sounding like no1 ever had. I don't think the 2 can really b compared. Let me tell ya, I seen the Family, Madhouse and the Revolution play at the Family Jamm and they all sounded AMAZING and it was like a big family reunion. I would love to see Prince just jam with them all again.

The Revolution, for me. I dig the NPG, but I there was an excellence and diversity of sound and color that was characteristic of the Revolution that the NPG's undeniable musical prowess still can't touch.
As accomplished as the NPG's musicians are, I still find that band's sound boring.

Snap said: As songwriters, no Prince band yet can beat The Revolution in all its forms (Andre Cymone, Dez Dickerson, Lisa Coleman, Wendy Melvoin, Mark Brown, Matt Fink, and Bobby "river run dry" Z.) -- ALL of whom have gone on to produce and write songs for others. I'd much rather listen to their music than the jazz-lite of NPG (tho they are much-respected musicians). The recent Musicology tour had the NPG playing mostly Revolution songs... and that says what?
Maybe that says that old prince lyrics and music is more popular. Let's face it , a lot of the old classics, Prince did himself in the studio and taught to the Revolution for tours. I believe that "shh!" is a song that Prince or Z on drums could not do the justice that Blackwell on drums gives that well deserved song. I think the NPG allows Prince to go further in his musical compostions because he knows the sound can be reproduced properly. It is one thing to hear the song in your head, another to actually get that same sound out of an instrument. I think NPG is the band that takes Prince there.
