OMG How could i forget Tom Jones version of "KISS"? Ok forget what i said about Jordan Knight and Ginuwine. Tom Jones did the best cover of a Prince song. His version was funky with the horns. P's version of course is still good, but i prefer Tom's version today

I've been scrolling down this entire page to see somemone mention it. That has to be top 5 if not the best prince cover ever. I found that on vinyl for $3.00 in a record shop a few years back.

A bunch of electro and lo-fi artists got together and did an album called If I Was Prince. The Misty Dixon version of The Beautiful Ones makes my heart melt.
You can hear clips of them here-

http://www.rexrecords.com...index.html

Peaches does Sexy Dancer on it. I always thought she was kinda Princey, in a Dirty Mind kinda way.
I'd have loved to have heard Jeff Buckley do some P. That WOULD have been special.

Was just going to mention Warren Zevon doing Raspberry Berret on David Letterman. Was it also on an album?

Big Audio Dynamite did a great version of 1999. I know that's not exactly what you meant by kick ass musicians, but Mick Jones was in the Clash, so he kicks ass to me.

I heard the Tonight Show band doing Lovesexy years ago.

How about The Cross by the Blind Boys of Alabama?`You can't get much more respectable than these guys. It's on their cd Higher Ground.`
`
Holy Cole has already been mentionned in connection to The Question of U. She also covered Purple Rain. Both covers are on the Bob Belden jazz Prince tribute. They are better than average in my opinion. Lots of my friends like them a lot.`
