what was the moment, song, or video that made you a Prince fan

For me it was the frist time I heard "Let's pretend we're married" from the "1999" album up to that point I was just a casual fan but when he said:

"Whatever you heard about me is true I change the rules and do what I wanna do I'm in love with god he's the only way cause you and know we gotta die someday you think I'm crazy you're probably right, but I'm gonna have fun every motherfuckin night you like to fight you're a double drag fool I'm goin to another life how about you"?

I was just floored there was no one doing the shit that P was doing at that time and follow by DMSR that was it for me. I have love this man talent from that day on. So what was for you that made you a prince fan. Sorry if this question has been posted before.

GLAM SLAM!! i was already a Prince fan from his 80's stuff. but the first time i heard Glam Slam, with the fucking breakdown at the end, and that funky ass orchestra, i was hooked. I stayed up 10 hours that night just to download Lovesexy on my slow ass computer, and when it finished i played it 10 times back to back, and i cried. It was something i heard when i needed to hear it. I think that album saved my life. Everytime i think about Glam Slam or hear that opening guitar lick i get that same feeling all over again. It still blows me away everytime i play it. Hence, my user name.

First time I ever heard P was back in '86. My older brother started to listen his music... I hated that voice etc.
In 1990 they aired "GB" album on Polish radio. I've recorded that for my brother. I've listen to it once, twice... my brother never get that tape and I fall in love... 4ever!!

I recall the first time I REALLY listened to Prince was at a High School party where a friend had put on "1999" album (I know I'm old...there were no CDs then!) I had heard the previous albums, but really more rumors than songs is what I'd heard up until then. But when "DMSR" and "Automatic" hit my ears, I had to find out who this was!! My friend told me Prince, but I could not believe it was the same person. I grabbed the album cover and simply stared at it and listened ALL NIGHT; the party ceased to exist at that point.

I never really recovered from that. (Happily)

I overheard the song "Thunder" in my brother's room when I was in 6th Grade. I was hooked from then on; I'd go "borrow" his prince cd's and play em over and over.

Seeing Computer BLue/Darlin Nikki on Purple Rain.

THen hearing it the same day on a loud ass stereo--It changed my entire view of what music was supposed to be.

I stopped listening to Thriller and Rick Springfield after that.
I even--dare I say it--stopped listening to Def Leppard.

What made me a FAN... accidentally listening to the Black Album when I was 13, I found it when going through my mum's ex' record collection. I loved the weirdness of it wink I had the Hits 1 already, but it was the Black Album that definitely made me a FAN.

The "Batdance" video! biggrin

Listen! lol
First I ever saw that video I thought Prince is a band cuz there were 2 "Princes" in that - the guitarist one and the dancing one (as I thought of them at that time)... lol
I thought they are twins and I asked my brother about the thing who said "what the f... are you talkin about, Prince is a man..." lol
How silly I was! lol (or am I still??) lol

So "Batdance" was the beginning of my awakening (as I mentioned earlier...) biggrin

Waking up one saturday morning my sophomore year to my brother dancing around singing the chorus to "LRC." Then I heard "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" and "I Wanna Be Your Lover." So funky! That was it.

The "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" performances on American Bandstand in early 1980. This was the first time I had ever seen someone with such a gay appearance out-jam and out-rock people with a straight appearance. This performance broke all stereotypes that gay people are into nerdy things like classical music, ballet, opera, and show tunes. Prince had pure attitude on that show and I was hooked ever since.

When Doves Cry

I occasionally had heard 1999 before and thought it was a good song, but I knew nothing about him and had never seen him. Then I heard WDC on the radio and saw the clip on MTV and it blew me away. I immediately bought the single and a new Prince fan was born. I am still around today and probably will be for the rest of my life.
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

The 1999 Album was my 1st intro. Was 10/11 yrs old, when I got the tape and couldn't put it down. Free, Little Red Corvette, International, Lover Lets Pretend We're Married were my favorites. Probably listened to that tape until Purple Rain came out. I mean the man cussed on the album. Everyone who's thirtysomething can understand that I thought that was the coolest s..t in the world. Probably didn't understand the sexual nature of the songs at the time. Just knew it was the best music I'd ever heard.

Seeing the Musicology tour converted me into a fan.

I was skeptical going in, since I only could name about 5 songs off the top of my head (even though I had never listened to them all the way) and came out wanting more, more and more.

Ever since then, I've been soaking everything in like a sponge.

My brother sat me down to watch a pirate video of Purple Rain in late '84 or early'85 and that was it. I was having problems at home and When Doves Cry articulated what I couldn't at the time.

Let's Pretend We're Married...

My sister was a Purple Rain fan but I just wasn't into it. I actually made disparraging remarks about Prince coming out at whichever award show with Big Chick. But then, one day, I overheard through the walls LPWM and I said "oh man, he's singing the F word". Being a massive Wham fan at the time, I was used to my music tame and innocuous but this dude was singing about fornicating the taste out of one's frontal oriface. I had to listen to more so I swiped the tape of 1999 out of my sister's room and listened to it for the next several days and that was it. I was hooked for life...
