Party O' The Times

So, I just know you guys 'n' gurls have knowledge of Party O' The Times - A Tribute To Prince Cleopatra, CLP 0687-2 (released 1999), and would love to hear what you think of it. I tried a search and a google search to see if this topic's been here before, but couldn't find anything. Picked this up from a local bargain store (INTERNATIONAL STOCK - KINGS HEATH) here in Birmingham for £2.99

    01. MISSING PERSONS Dale Bozzio - I Would Die 4 U star
    02. REBECCA ROMAN STAMOS - Darling Nikki starstar
    03. ICE-T - Head starstarstar
    04. HEAVEN 17 - Sign O' The Times starstarstarstar
    05. MELLOW MAN ACE featuring Geo - Irresistable Bitch star
    06. DEAD OR ALIVE - Pop Life starstarstarstarstar
    07. GARY NUMAN - U Got The Look star
    08. LOLEATTA HOLOWAY - I Wanna Be Your Lover star
    09. SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK - I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man starstarstar
    10. BUDDY MILES - Baby I'm A Star starstar
    11. ADEVA - 1999 starstarstar
    12. INFORMATION SOCIETY - Controversy starstarstar
    13. MEEKS - Little Red Corvette starstar

The inner card has liner notes by Dave Thompson, each track credited with a distinct producer and studio, so a compilation. (?) Trying to cash in on 1999 fever in 1999 !!?

I wonder: Who put this together? ... who else did covers and were rejected?

Listening to it for the first time as I write and adding a star rating, being generous as every track gets at least one star out of five for trying. Difficult hearing new versions through memories of original version, giving preference to cover versions which throw a new and interesting light on the songs.

OVERALL: starstar and VERY POTTY.

£2.99? I think you overpaid for it. I got it for 99¢ on ebay and I think that's exactly what it's worth. I agree with you though, that Dead Or Alive's "Pop Life" is the best track on the album.

I started to listen to it for a second time, jumping to each new track pretty quickly.

Conclusion: REALLY AWFUL

Thanks for the replies.

I have it. "Head" and "Irresistable Bitch" are decent. I like "Controversy" but the British accent really trips me out...CONtroVERsy. lol I love the house remakes of "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and "1999".
Andy is a four letter word.

I think it was the record company. Around the same time they put out Madonna and U2 ones too, I know because Dead Or Alive were commissioned to do tracks for all 3 records - Pop Life, Why Is It So Hard (Madonna) and Even Better Than The Real Thing (U2).

I really like their version of Pop Life - it's completely different, and very dark, Pete's growl really gives an ominous edge to the track.

I'm biased being a DOA fan though smile

I don't mind Gary Numan's 'U Got the Look', but otherwise, barf.
