you're supposed to stroke my ego and tell me how great it is.

or crush my spirits, tell me it sucks, and explain how you'd do your own.

no, but then the songs ON Musicology don't sound like they have anything to do with EACH OTHER either. they're all from the same period. mid-2002 to now.

I like it. I like how the sound evolves over the course of the disc. I need to make something like this for myself.

What are the two segues that you've added (tracks 2 & 12)?

I definitely wouldn't end the album with Empty Room, maybe there's a slot opening? Hmmm...

I think that as far as albums like Musicology and Rave, they have gotten lost in the decade-to-decade translation. Musicians used to do albums like that all the time, where they're not necessarily going anywhere, or really have something to say, but are like a photo album, and are musical snapshots. TRC was different. It was Prince staying in the jazz vibe, but you knew he was making a conscious effort to say A WHOLE LOT!

Where did we lose our appreciation for the short and sweet?
I'm only voicing my opinion here, but once a one-disc album reaches past 12-14 songs, it's just too frickin' long. Either break that stuff up into two discs, or save what you have to say for the next record. biggrin

i agree that any released album over 45 to 55 minutes is too long. but that doesn't apply to CD-R's wink

they're the segues that, on the original album, are between Musicology/ICP&C and WDUWM2D/Marrying Kind. i just split them off as their own tracks, as they should have been from the beginning.

True, but also, when yer paying anywhere from 12 - 20 bucks for a store-bought CD I say fill that sucker up and give me my damn money's worth! (even if there is some filler)

I think it's good. I think an even better would have been a 2 disk comp of the best of Musicology/Chocolate Invasion/SLaughterhouse/B-sides. But who woulda bought a 2 disk set?

I think there was a very good reason to make the album as short as it was, and for that reason, it should be untouched in it's format.

whether or not the album is complete as released really isn't the point. have you never added bonus tracks to an album before?

also, what do you mean by "the songs added just don't fit at all."?

very few of the songs on the album sound like they fit together anyway.

i've made one of those before. quasi-political/spiritual and party songs on one disc, romantic/sex/love songs on the other.

I think there was a very good reason to make the album as short as it was, and for that reason, it should be untouched in it's format.

what's with you people? don't any of you have CD burners, and obssessively try to reconfigure albums? lol

well that's your opinion and this is mine. musicology IS a cohesive album in my humble opinion. all the songs sound like they came from the same sessions and fit to an overall sound. the downloads you've included sound more like chocolate invasion (magnificent, USOD), or one nite alone (silver tongue). I think Musicology is a great album; Prince-lite and concise as it may be, it sounds complete.

yes, I have added tracks to albums in my own compilations, but by and large, I still go back to what Prince intended his albums to sound like, because, i don't know, there's something special about an official release. call me crazy! i'm not saying there's anything WRONG with making comps - they're fun - I just happen to regard a finished work as perhaps something sort of sacred AS IT IS because it is how the artist wished people to hear it. nothing wrong with altering it to your own liking tho!

oh yes. ICP&C and Life O The Party sound like the same sessions that produced A Million Days... or Reflection, for that matter. or Dear Mr. Man. uh huh rolleyes
