Emancipation Album brought in UK

Bought the Emancipation album for under a tenner on the weekend - absolute bargain - but I've found that it has been "clipped" on the plastic casing (ie. a 1cm chunk taken out). Anyone know what this means?

Ta v much, Steve.

it's a cut-out--albums usually have cut-outs on 'em if they've got a glitch on 'em or it's scratched.

You sure? This one was shrink-wrapped though.

Hmmm, still not convinced - sounds a bit silly to further damage something that's already classed as marked/damaged.

A long time ago there used to be a place that sold cut-outs online.

My memory on the subject is fuzzy on the issue, but I'm sure I remember reading it was record (distrubiton?) company surplus.

I have a few cut-out CDs and vinyl myself, they play perfect, I have a long box Graffiti Bridge for example, and the CD was cut out, I think my copy of the Good Question LP is cutout, and sealed as Handclaps say.

Would be interested to hear why exactly they are cut out though smile

Edit:

Well I searched Google (the fountain of all knowledge lol ) and got this

Which offers the opinon that both reasons are right - store returns were cut so they couldn't be returned again, but according to one poster, the main reason for cut-outs was overstock.

I thought that a cut-out was simply a marked down album. . .nothing wrong with it [except for the cut in the case]. . .

Drilled or cut-out sleeves on vinyl & CD means that the album is now deleted.
Once an album is deleted (i.e. no further copies will be manufactured), all
remaining copies at the manufacturers are "cut-out". (not entirely sure 'why'
they do it... but that's what it means).

'cut-out's take take various forms...

> one of the corners cut off at a 45 degree angle

> a small hole 'drilled' through the cover near the spine

> a cut (like a saw mark) through the spine

This is what I thought too.. I have lots of old shrinkwrapped records that they did this to. Really annoyed me..
