The thing I didn't like was that "Batdance", "The Future", and "Electric Chair" were basically the same song, just split three ways. "Scandalous" definately ranks up there with "Do Me, Baby".
[Edited 10/5/04 11:42am] waitaminute....but wasn't Batdance just like a promo for the soundtrack. isn't that why he put them together in one song?? I don't know but "The Future" sounds like "Batdance (Part I)" and "Electric Chair" sounds like "Batdance (Part II)". He should have put only "Batdance" on the album and replaced the other two with two different songs. The three of them on the same album makes it sound like it was rushed to be made. "The Future" and "Electric Chair" should have been put on the "Batdance" maxi single as parts I & II. "Lemon Crush" is also the same groove as one of the tracks on the "Minneapolis Genius" album. The "Batman" album definately sounds like it was rushed to be made. [Edited 10/6/04 3:32am] Andy is a four letter word.

Fans who joined before, let’s say 1986, lived the great years …. most of them were greatly disappointed with Batman.
In retrospective, it’s the first album that really sucks. It has got the wrong vibe, it’s to electric and industrial …. it’s cold. The introducing single, Batdance, is horrible …. Scandalous: the most horrible video ever made. The Arms of Orion makes me wanna puke. And I can go on with this dislike! Fans who joined after, let’s say 1992: they don’t have this historic burden, and tend to like almost everything P has released.

see, i think the thing is people are seeing it as a Prince album and not a soundtrack when that's what it is. and the soundtrack fits perfectly with the movie, if you've ever seen it...it's not about Prince it's about the movie. hence, the "sound" of it. and Batdance is funky as shit. It's nowhere nearly as electronic or "industrial" (don't know what that is supposed to mean in your context) as 1999. Besides, why would that be a negative factor? Unless, of course you don't like electronic music half that much yourself. Scandalous: the most horrible video ever made.
Not really... Fans who joined after, let’s say 1992: they don’t have this historic burden, and tend to like almost everything P has released.
This is quite true. Not everything, but they (we - count me in) are far more - let's say - "open" to albums such as "Around The World In A Day" or "Batman".

I don't have Batman album, so I can't comment on "Arms Of Orion" or "Lemon Crush", but Batdance and Electric Chair....They rock!
I like the fact that he can go a bit more electric and still have an amazing sound. I love the guitar solo in Batdance...heck, I like everything about it! I have the video, and it's a work of a true genious. Electric Chair is one of the cutest songs, and I am fortunate enough to have a video of Prince performing it in Jerry Hall show, and it's cooking!!! He is so happy, so upbeat and flirty, and I love the longish hair and the shiny bluegreen cloud guitar... Get it and watch it is all I can say! Sirah

Batman is more f*cked up, not cool .... let's just say that Batman hasn't the right vibe for me and a lot of "old-school" fans. 1999 has a perfect vibe. I love the "Around The World In A Day" album!!! I really love every release prior to Batman! Don't forget that the ORG doesn't represent the "old-school" fans, because most of them left in the early 90's .... they haven't heard of the org. The org tends to represent the new fans, who didn't really experience the 80's .... it's quit different to wait for the new album for a year and to get the Batman album, or to buy the complete backcatalogue in a year [Edited 10/6/04 23:36pm]

Batman was an album made 4 the charts...and it worked!!
It's Prince playing HIS music leaving out the more difficult sounds and music...radio friendly if U like. It still sounds better than so,e stuff off the mid 90's though-NPS;Rave... Love4oneanother

You hit the nail on the head. I haven't listened to it probably since the year it came out.... but I had the same feeling. I used to buy P albums the day they were released.... but this was just a let down. I probably liked it the first day or so.... but when you stand back and compare it to everything that came before..... it's just flat and boring. I can't comment on comparing it to other 90s stuff though other D&P and Symbol, cuz I finally gave up after that. Until now that is I gave up at that point too. Wierd. If I were anything else, i'd be the water in your bath....

I still bought the legal stuff released after Batman, but never got excited again. Graffiti Bridge was even a bigger disappointment, because most of the songs were already available on bootleg-tape, and those demos are far superior to the released versions …. After this album the excitement of a new Prince-album never reappeared …. to be honest …. After LoveSexy Prince hasn’t released one great album. Prince had to move to make place for the new Funkateers like Maxwell / d’Angelo / Amp Fiddler … But Prince stood on top for 10 years, both Maxwell and d’Angelo only made a great debut album.

I don't really like Batdance all that much but I love the album as a whole.
I thought the Batdance video looked really cheap and embarrassing. I know that the Alphabet St. video had lower production values but it looked intentionally cheap. Don't forget that... It's the last single album that fits on two sides of vinyl. Every album afterwards (with the exception of One Nite Alone) until Musicology was sprawling and too long; It's the last album which had proper B-Sides for every single release instead of a batch of pointless "house" remixes; The Scandalous Sex Suite could be viewed as his first EP. Graffiti Bridge, the following year, was the first disappointing album.

We experienced the '80s Prince music and have been following ever since. The only difference is there was no internet as such back in the day. I remember getting 'Batman' the first day it came out and thinking "damn, Prince actually made an album that sucks". Looking back, it is not a horrible album, it's just that after years of great albums this was a big let down. I totally agree on later fans being easier on the 'Batman' album. I remember my niece that became a fan around 94, thought that "Trust" was simply one of P's best songs ever. All I remember is after a long string of fine ass albums, when 'Batman' came through I knew something wasn't right. Again, I have taken a different view the last few years (compared to what came in the 90s), but back in 89 it was a different story. "Did u love somebody

I've been a P fan since 1979. Batman's not up there with Prince, 1999 & Purple Rain, but I liked it better than Lovesexy. 'Electric Chair', Vicki Waiting', 'Partyman', 'Trust', 'Scandalous' & 'Batdance' are fun tunes.

Shit production, very plastic-y.
Substandard songs, for Prince. Awesome guitar solo in Batdance tho.

Batman album is where Prince totally lost his inspiration and was just working his "job" getting a paycheck.
I mean, he got into the Joker costume and shit. Would the real inspired Prince change his image even for a video? Hell no! He just was bored to fuck and had nothing to do. In this life, there are things for us to do, but we forget and end up simplifying things of which we regret. So Prince made the Batman album and everything after. The Jazz he should have truly gotten into is catching up to him. His pops got him into it, made him a star, and now Prince is going to find out what its like to make an album from start to finish of pure Jazz. Good luck to him. I know I'll check it out.
