Prince, Pep Willie and Andr Cymone – 94 East

I just purchased this great 2 disc CD. I was shocked 2 know P was only 16 when 94 East was recorded. What can u tell me about this early recording and where is Pep Willie? I read an older article on Housequake about Pep Willie being disappointed with P at the time 4 not helping him get his musical career off the ground once he was signed on by WB. Also how do u rate P’s musical talents at 16 on this DC?

Is it that ugly "Legend" 2-disc collection with the clip-art green background and the gold frame around a picture of Prince?

I find it historically interesting, but the general consensus is that this ain't stellar material. I also believe these were recorded in 1976 and 1977, making him 18 at the youngest.

This thing has been whored around for years, it's been released, and re-released, over and over.

Prince played guitar on it, whoop-di-doo!!!

I say download it, don't give these con-artists any more money than they already have. Putting Prince on the cover of the CD, when he plays a minimal part on 1 or 2 tracks is just tacky, it's a cash-in, in the most vulgar sense.

When I purchased this box set it was wrapped and had “imported UK” in red. The cover and the 2 CD’s has a picture of P on them. Now the article on Housequake with Pep Willie has a different cover. Any way this is what’s on those 2 CD’s…….

94 East featuring Prince (Disc 1)
1 Just Another Sucker
2. If U feel Like dancing
3. Lovin’ Cup
4. Games
5. Dance2 the Music of the World
6. 1 Man Jam

94 East featuring Prince {Disc 2)
1. If U C Me
2 Ill Always Love U
3. Better Than U Think
4. If We Don’t
5. U Can Be My Teacher
6. Love, Love, Love
7. Dance 2 The Music Of The World (Practice Session)
8. If U See Me (Instrumental Version)
9. Games (Instrumental Version)
10. Better Than U think (Instrumental Version)

Prince is supposedly singing on some of these songs and supposedly playing various instruments on all others. U can go 2 this link and read the article on Pep Willie

Yes, they give his age inside the cover of the CD. Read this thread, I gave a link where u can also read on Pep Willie. I hope the information given is true. I can't tell if that's P's voice because there r others singing with him. Supposedly it's him playing various instruments also wink

I bought this album on vinyl about 15 years ago...the band was called Minneapolis Genius and

I still can't distinguish Prince's contribution from anyone else that played on it.

Pepe Willie has a website, that of course, features this album and Prince's name..along with

some other trivial tidbits.

I , personally, never thought the album was all that great.... Kinda boring and repetitive.

Did you see the girl get thrown into the dumpster? He was the dumpster.

The record IS lame. It was recorded, but then re-recorded when PR became huge. The music was re-done to sound more like Prince's stuff.

Ready For The World was better.

falloff Good follow-up, there otan. You're right though. That album has been rehased way too many times. Twice was more than enough times for some off-the-cuff studio jam sessions to be released.

I'm thinking Spring 2005.

The 2-disc set I have is purple and black entitled "94 EAST featuring PRINCE- A Symbolic Beginning". I really feel that this is a very nice collector's item for true Prince fans. It does mention Prince contributing several instruments during his mid teens. You can even hear him speak during the practice session of "Dance To The Music Of The World". A couple of the songs really jam, "Just Another Sucker" (which "P" co-wrote) and "If You See Me" (Instrumental Version) which Jesse Johnson later recorded on one of his albums. "P" shows his talent even at a young age with a really nice guitar solo on "Better Than You Think".

Well there's the original release in 1986, 94 East - Minneapolis Genius
Then the re-release in 1995, 94 East feat. Prince - Symbolic Beginning
And the 2002 re-release, Prince & 94 Easy - One Man Jam

(Notice how with each release Prince gets billed higher!)

The only track to have Prince's song writing input is 'Just Another Sucker', which is credited as being co-written by Pepe and Prince.

The tracks were updated for the later releases, but Prince's (and Andre's?) parts were left in-tack.

Prince is listed as a musician on the following tracks:

- If You Feel Like Dancin'
- Just Another Sucker
- Better Than You Think
- Dance To The Music Of The World
- If You See Me

I think that's it, a quick flick through The Vault gleaned that info.

Prince later covered 'If You See Me' (I forget when, it was either 81/82 pre-1999) re-titled, 'Do Yourself A Favour' (unreleased), and so did Jesse Johnson later on also - released on 1986's Shockadelica.

I like both Prince's and Jesse's versions smile

Prince's version of "Do Yourself a Favor" kicks ass! booty! woot! booty! I like Jesse's cover of the song as well, but I like Prince's more, it was very funky and cool. That song always puts me in a good mood, must be the upbeat melody or something. biggrin
