What's the verdict on "Exodus"?

Just bought it from eBay... was curious to know what you guys thought of it?

Was it worth my hard-earned money (all £4 of it)????

Excellent.

All 3 NPG albums are highly enjoyable.

One could say there are too many segues on this record, but it's clearly Prince's most George Clinton-inspired record, right down to the artwork.

The Mashed Potato Girl story still cracks me up lol

I just got a copy of it and so far (only listened to it once) haven't been so impressed...I sure wouldn't compare it to TGE. boxed

I don't think Novabreaker was comparing it to TGE, more that it's the companion to it.

Same band (some say his best) - it's about that whole time period of 94/95, I agree Exodus is the true companion album to TGE cool

Goldnigga was done with the original NPG lineup...

If you like Tony M, you'll love Goldnigga. If you hate Tony M., you'll have a hard time enjoying Goldnigga. I'm indifferent to Tony M., and find Goldnigga fun and funkey, but I think Exodus is the best of the NPG albums....

Exodus is easily the best out of the 3 NPG albums. It's only real problem is that it's got way
too many segues and interludes.

Tony M. sings most of the vocals, though you can hear Prince on 2 tracks, Johnny and Black MFs in the House.

It was available from 1800 New Funk back in the day for a while.

It's okay, funky, but I much prefer Exodus. After listening to Come, I thought, where's Prince's sense of humour gone? Then 'he' came out with this - very funny in parts, very lengthy segues, like any segue you get bored with it and fast forward after a few listens. But the actual tracks are very funky. Lot's of unnecessary swearing on this. Cool!

A lot of people who came to the party late are confused about Goldnigga. It was actually released in the Fall of 1993, before Come. Come was released in August 1994, but a lot of the international sales of Goldnigga came AFTER the second pressing, which apparently was sometime after Come had already been released.

(Did I just further confuse everyone?)

The only thing that really links it to TGE (and Come) are the faddy interludes which you can either take or leave. I don't think there's much that links them from the point of view of style.

As regards quality, The Exodus Has Begun is an extraordinary piece, far more adventurous than most of the stuff on TGE.

Well, I can understand that view too. TGE is far more reverberated and melodically more fluent - however many tracks from Exodus could have been included on TGE as well, somehow I just don't see it necessarily working the other way around: TGE cuts wouldn't have fitted that well on Exodus. Am I making any sense here?

Making sense, yep.

'Acknowledge Me' was put on early versions of both albums, so they share that smile

The main thing is, is that the NPG line-up was the same, that was a great band, not my personal favourite, but it had a lot of personality.

lol Me too, it's funny how Prince does both voices (the guy with the New York accent and the guy with the deep voice who seems kinda passive) on that track. It's the funniest interlude on that whole CD.

I find myself putting on the Exodus CD when I need to laugh. This sounds strange, but part of what makes that CD funny now is hearing Prince cussing. We don't hear that anymore. sad
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
