It's called make-up and believe me he wears plenty of it!! In older photo's he didn't wear as much so therefore he appears darker, but the last 15 years he wears a lot of it.

He's darker now than he's been in years.

I did notice during ATWIAD/PARADE he seemed lighter--this must have been the inspiration MJ needed to basically outdue Jocylne Wildenstein, but during SOTT he seemed chocolately caramel again.
Now in Graffiti Bridge, our boy was scary light--the "New Power Generation" maxi-single with his picture on it, I swear he was ghostly white--completely a few shades lighter than during Contreversy/19999--It didn't even look like the same person.

But lately it seems, he's darkenned again.

The difference between Prince and what Lil Kim and MJ have done is that Prince was always a little light for a black guy, and his color (except during LoveSexy/GB days) remained in a spectrum that was recognizably ethnic.

But that's not important right now. Has anybody ever noticed in his camel toe pix, that in some of them he seems small or average, and on some of them you'd think he was John Holmes?

We are the rainbow children and do not need to explain why one black person is lighter than the other...did you see the documentary "The Real Eve" on the Discovery Channel...that will explain a little part of the complexion situation when it comes to Black People all over the world...you are all a part of us..... confused .....Peace.

I'm not saying that because Prince is black, he needs to be dark.
I'm saying that there is a stark difference in his skin tone between phases in his career that is unlikely the result of just stying out of the sun--some cosmetic "touch up" is appearantly at work there.

WHY IN THE HELL DO YOU HAVE TO ASSUME THAT I"M SAYING ALL BLACK POEPLE NEED TO LOOK LIKE THE TAR BABY?
GOD DAMN! I'm asian and I don't go off on the fly becuase I think everybody assumes that I should have a small penis. MY PENIS IS FUCKING HUGE!!!!!

Ok 'Bro./Sis. Souljah', it doesn't have 2 B about all of that now, REALLY. Prince may have had his skin lightened, like Michael Jackson, but thankfully chose not 2 go as far as MJ. He very obviously has made himself look MUCH lighter than when he originally burst on2 the music scene. That's even something that Stevie Wonder could see. Prince has conscientiously distanced himself from the Black community in the past, and lightening his skin, and perming his hair were all a part of that. After he went through his 'slave' phase w/ WBs, and even since he has become a JW, he seems more in touch w/ his Blackness again, which I personally, find appealing. Not that I bought that his situation w/ WBs was 1/10 as bad as what our African ancestors endured under chattel slavery, BUT, he claimed that he was not trying 2 compare his situation 2 theirs anyway...

I think it all has to do with the lighting in the different photographs. White people look lighter and darker in different photographs also.

Prince has not lightened his skin. I agree with those that said it had to do with the lighting, which makes him appear darker and lighter on some pics. You can definitely tell the difference between those that have lightened their skin, like lil Kim and MJ(yes I do believe that MJ lightened his skin and doesn't have vitiligo) and Prince.

Hey thanks for the the Title..bruce/susan lee....The point is there is such a thing as makeup when you are a performer on stage and as far as Prince lightening his skin is ridiculous. Comparing him to what MJ did is totally ridiculous, and as far as "...even Stevie Wonder could see that"...He wouldn't notice if he could see, because that would not have been an issue for him to notice as much as it would be to someone outside of his race.

Prince was born a very, fair-skinned black man, so there was no need for him to make himself lighter. He has been known to wear makeup from the beginning, so it is not unusual that he would look lighter or darker when seen in person or in a picture....On stage and on camera, the lights will make your complexion look either light or dark. When my sister saw him on stage at a small club in NYC years ago, she even noticed that he appeared to be what she described as a "milk-white" up close.

As far as perming his hair as being part of "straying away from his race" that is ridiculous. He permed his hair to look different, it's all about style, fashion, stage presence, getting attention, etc.. He always had his own style. Perming your hair has nothing to do with straying away from your race as many tried to say years ago. There are White Rock musicians with Dreads...does this mean they are trying to stray away from their race because they are sporting dreads which is considered to many as a "black natural hairdo?"...I think not....James Brown has permed his hair for years and still does.... does this mean James wanted to stray away from his race...not hardly...especially making hit after hit and being given the title of the "King of Soul" who appealed to "many" races and still does.. Prince and James, have also both dated women within and outside of their race as well. Now isn't it ironic that Prince now has "Maceo" in his band, and Prince has stated that James Brown was definitely one of his idols which is so apparent in Prince's past concert and video performancesf? (i.e., splits, throwing the microphone down on the floor and swinging it back up, the screams, sliding across the stage...)

I am very proud to be an African-American and if I perm my hair, does this mean I am trying to be white? Of course not. White women get "curly perms" does that mean they are trying to be hispanic or black? Of course not. Hair styles are all about culture. fashion, style, etc. .....on a different note...If White people go on the beach to get a tan does that mean they are trying to be Black...hell no it doesn't. But you have some people who are so ignorant that they will believe that.

Shoud I assume because you are Asian that all you ever eat is CHINESE FOOD..or if you are an Asian guy that you have a manhood the size of half of a pinky finger as it has been stated by some.....now that would be foolish wouldn't it? Yes it all sounds stupid doesn't it?

So as far as your comments that Prince may have lightened his skin permed his hair to stray away from his race is ridiculous..

His musicology CD brings out the funk, jazz, rock and fusion in him and is appealing to all races. I don't think it would have made a difference whether he wore an Afro or bleach cream. ...PEACE.

Well, Prince played around with his racial ambiquity--this is irefutable. He mentions it in Contreversy poking fun at what was being said about him.

But during the 80's there was a DEFINATE attempt to reach out to a white audience, I feel , at the risk of alienating black fans and even muddling his racial identity.
"Little Red Corvette" deliberately used a white icon, and his videos where pepperred with white women. The climax of this wierd "whitening" of his music can be seen in Under THe Cherry Moon where two black men "Prince and Jerome" both vai for the attention of a rich whtie women. What makes things REALLY bad is that in the same movie Prince is approached by an older black women, and he runs away screaming--NOT GOOD.

I think Prince understood the message he was (NOT DELIBERATELY) portraying, and he has since incorporated black models in prominent roles in his videos.

But his skind DID lighten and darken through the years, whether you contribute it to makeup, lack of sun, or whatever--it did. Look at the "Prince" album cover then look at the Versace Gold Pictures.

I think the message Prince is now conveying is much more realistic then it was years ago: White skin is beautiful, but black is equally beautiful.

As for asian skin? We're fine as hell.

Agree 100%

If you look at my pic from 10 years ago I was 7 shades darker than now. I use to stay out in the sun, but now that I'm older I avoid the sun or wear spf 25. Then everybody thought I was a black mix, but now people think I'm Asian mix.

Warner Bros. touched up the photo to make it darker so everyone would know he's black. Remember he had just permed his hair (like alot of guys were doing back then). If you have the original album look at the back of it. They forgot to touch that pic up and he looks his normal skin tone. Same for the pic on the inner-sleeve of the album, only it's a black and white photo.

Also, if you have the original For You album the inner-sleeve is pic of him sitting naked on a bed with a guitar, he's his normal skin tone in one that one too.

This is very simple. Prince is a black man. He was born to black parents. Neither one of his parents are overly dark complected. I had friend growing up whose parents were very dark complected he was as light if not lighter than Prince is. His skin has NEVER CHANGED. Makeup, lighting all sorts of stuff can factor in here. He just as light skinned in the dirty mind days as he is now. The bottom line is: WHO CARES!!!!

lawdy...I responded to what YOU typed....I didn't make an assumption...I responded to you saying that "Prince is a little light for a black guy." that is what you typed right? And it is obivious that I'm not the only one who read this as a naive statement.

So all of your flaming and cussing is uncalled for. If you meant something different, you should have typed something different. You can't get upset because someone is responding to what you typed.

I don't even want to know the ignorant bs that had to be removed by Luv. rolleyes

and Zelijah, i feel you. I just get tired of silly comments especially on this site. Who cares if one picture prince is a little lighter or darker...shrug Just silly.

As I keep saying..this is really silly to even be discussing.

AND THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD!!!!!

once again, I've responded to you..rolleyes....I will heed to Zelijah and Heybaby and keep it moving.

The difference between Prince and what Lil Kim and MJ have done is that Prince was always a little light for a black guy, and his color (except during LoveSexy/GB days) remained in a spectrum that was recognizably ethnic.
