Let's settle this debate once & for all... The thing about Prince is that it is maddeningly difficult to dismiss any of his projects. I thought and still do that “Newpower Soul” was the best of the 3 NPG records. But this one had Prince’s mug on the cover and that completely changed expectations.
If he had hidden himself behind an alter ego like with most side projects, I believe this record would be viewed in entirely different way. Not that it would be highly respected by any stretch of the imagination, just that it wouldn’t have become this oft-discussed work that has almost become the synonym for "Prince failure". Newpower Soul should not be judged by the same standards as a mainstream Prince album. It is simply an album by the New Power Generation, just as Gold Nigga and Exodus are.

I've always judged the NPG albums as Prince albums (I file them under the "P" section of my CD library), and NPS is by far at the bottom of the three. What's more, I consider Exodus to be a classic, and Gold Nigga to be really good. But I do agree that, even when Prince releases a so-called "bad" album, it's extremely difficult to dismiss the work altogether. "Knowledge is preferable to ignorance. Based on a "how-many-songs-do-I-like" ratio I´d say that New Power Soul is my favorite NPG album.
I like The One, Come On, Wasted Kisses...these are great tracks that would still be great on a regular Prince album. I also like most of the rest. Let´s put it this way...I can´t stand I like Funky Music, Push It Up and the opening song NewPower Soul...the latter being OK, the first two simply unlistenable..but other than that it´s a decent album. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I like that at least all 3 NPG lps have a diferent "sound" to them. But in general
they all have about 1/3 filler.

NewpowerSoul is SO not an NPG record - I know what's written on the cover, and I don't care. I don't hear collaboration on this album the way I hear it on the other two NPG albums. Why is Prince handling vocals on NPS? Why is his face the only face you see on the cover? Why isn't there at least a band shot on the back cover? I think Prince's whole "vibe" at the time was that he wanted to take a backseat to the people he was working with - Larry, Chaka, Doug E., etc. - but at the same time, he didn't have anyone within his own band who'd make for a suitable enough front person for an NPG project, so he just made a Prince album and slapped "NPG" on it.
I will agree with this, however - NPS is not the horrible piece of flaming poo many people make it out to be. When this album gets stinky, it can stank up the room - don't get me wrong! But there are several songs on this album I really, really like - "The One", "Come On", "Mad Sex", "Wasted Kisses"...its worth its weight and girth on my CD shelf, I'll put it that way.

As POOK once wrote:
"Prince make record Prince put face on album cover It Prince record" That being said, of the three, Exodus had the best music. The problem with that album, (for me at least) was 1) Sonny T singing lead on damn near every track, 2) the segues are funny the first time around, but annoying after that, 3) too much over the top cursing, and 4) "The Exodus Has Begun" is a glorified rip of Parliment/Funkadelic's "Night of the Thumpasorus People". Newpowersoul was a way (at the time) for Prince to deal with the death of his child, without really dealing with it, i.e. his musical escape. And because of that, I do not bash this album the way other fans do. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'll play it first and tell you what it is later. -Miles Davis-
