Are You For Or Against Bootlegs?

Just wanting to know where you all stand on this issue.

Does it really affect Prince that much?

Are they a good thing or bad thing?

do you have loads of boots or none at all?

does owning bootlegs make you more or less of a fan?

Me? I love bootlegs, and have plenty. I'd willingly re-purchase official versions of them if Prince would open the vault. I don't think he's losing anything, if anything boots have helped me stay a fan all this time, so he's made more $$$'s out of me in the longrun.

IMO if you don't own or refuse anything to do with bootlegs you've missed out on a lot, in some cases the best Prince has to offer.

If there were no boots, I would have lost interest in 1991 ....
so I bought a lot of boots, mainly from the 80's

.... and I bought all the legal stuff too ....
without the boots I wouldn't have bought the legal stuff, and I would't be on a Prince-site

I got 55 Dvds, baby. So how we gonna trade?
(Ooh - I wanna trade with u)
(Ooh - I wanna trade with u)

This is safe trade,
New Power Generation style
A funky little story about u and me
Gettin busy 4 awhile
From the top of my Dvd listing
2 the bottom of your trade list too
We gonna trade and trade and trade
Until we're both deranged
With endorphins
This is the ultimate trade
Ooh - I wanna trade with u
Disc 4 a Disc

Slow and slippery, groovy
If we trade with each other's disc
In other words, get close enough to trade
And I'll trade with u
And u can trade with me 2
And we'll trade and trade until the earth moves
I want 2 trade with u, yeah

Don't look now, Mr Paisley Police
U must have been a Prince fan
What am we guilty of? Oh no (oh no)
Are u afraid? Then take me 2 the next trade...

Slow and slippery, groovy
If we trade with each other's disc
In other words, get close enough to trade
And I'll trade with u
And u can trade with me 2
And we'll trade and trade until the earth moves
I want 2 trade with u, yeah (Trade me)

I'm thinkin' about the Superball Release now (ooh, I wanna melt with u)
The latest from Camille too
And thinkin' about Moonraker and Thunderball
I'm thinkin' about some of Sabotage
And I'm thinkin' about some of Fullasoul
And then my player just burns
And then dvd player just burns and burns some dvds 4u...
Disc 4 a Disc

Yeah, do that baby
Yeah, do that baby
Yeah, do that baby, just like a trade (ooh, I wanna trade with u)
Yeah, do that baby, just like trade (ooh, I wanna trade with u)

I'm against bootlegs in the way that other people make money on P's work. But I'm definately for trading/sharing/downloading of stuff that's not commercially available. Who aren't?

I, unfortunately, have not been able to get my hands on A LOT of boots throughout the years, and I can tell just from reading posts on this website that I am REALLY missing out on a lot of his music, a large amount of which is probably very good. I also feel that if he did not make it so difficult to get to his music($100/yr. for the NPGMC was just ridiculous, and highway robbery), then folks would not have 2 be forced 2 take such drastic measures. I also think that if I had some decent boots to groove off of from 96-whenever Crystal Ball/Truth came out, then I would not have fallen off while he was in Europe, refusing to come home until his contract w/ Warners burned off, and what-have-you. He may be against boots, but I feel like he needs 2 be thankful that people love his work THAT much, that they can't get enough of it, which proves that he was right in insisting that Warners put out at LEAST 1 album a year 4 him, some of which SHOULD have been triple and double CDs, just to get the music OUT, 2 what very obviously, is a voracious fanbase. I STILL think 4 example, that the BA & LS should have been released as a double CD set, like Speakerboxxx/LoveBelow, to show the good vs. the bad. Those albums go together, and are best listened 2 together, because they complement each other perfectly.
So if I had a better understanding of how 2 acquire boots, I would do it, just 2 partake in what I KNOW I'm missing out on. Deadheads have traded boots 4 YEARS, and do not think 4 a minute that those guys from the Dead R not wealthy, after years of touring, IN SPITE of, or maybe even BECAUSE of all the trading, and subsequent spreading of their music, which did nothing but increase their appeal, and made them seem "cool", in a subversive kind of way.

Listen to the first 5 sets of "The Work" and that question would be answered.
Prince has probably gained more fan support due to boots. Its just another way to experience his musical genius.

I'm against them. If Prince wanted us to hear that stuff, he would have released it. I had no right to hear Electric Intercourse and numerous aftershows and rehearsals, despite how much I enjoyed them. In fact thousands of Prince fans have had their lives enriched by bootlegs, but they are still evil because..well, because they just are, and because Prince says so.

Fuck all that noise. I've got over 500 unreleased/alternate takes on my hard drive. I've never bought a bootleg cuz they're too expensive (30+ dollars for one cd? hell nah) .... I honestly don't care that prince never released any of it. He should have had tighter security. I don't support people who sell bootlegs for profit, and I feel justified by that. Like others have said, I'd gladly buy any vault cds that prince would come out with, for the better sound quality. And yea, also, I would have lost interest in prince's music, about six years ago, if not for trying to fill all the blanks in my studio outake collection. I've just about got everything circulating now, and I've yet to listen to it all. Those that are ignoring this music because "prince said so, etc" have no idea what they're missing.

Besides, I, and a lot of people, believe that a lot of the bootlegs that came out in the 80s, came directly from prince's hands as a way to get more music out there than warner bros would allow. That's not a cop-out either. I don't care who disagrees with me on whether bootlegs are evil and bad. Free bootlegs are never bad!

I've never really known where to get a hold of bootlegs. So, while not making me less of a fan, it makes me a more ignorant fan, I guess. If I knew where to get my hands on them, I'd prolly go broke buying collecting 'em all.
