Prince coughing on the Raspberry Beret Video I was just watching the Raspberry Beret video. I’m sure this has been discussed before but not 2 my knowledge so here goes. What’s up with P coughing at the beginning of that video? Let me know if this was suppose 2 be edited and if so how did they make that obvious mistake of letting it stay in there. LOL…… |

I remember a celebrity interview at the time the video came out (for some reason I think it was Charlie Sheen or somebody) where the celebrity praised the artistry of Prince coughing in the song because he thought it was meant to represent Prince saying, "See I am out here doing this song/performance for YOU the listener, even though its taking its toll. I am sacrificing for my art."

I've always loved that bit. Just adds a bit of quirky funk to it all.
In fact, I believe Yoko Ono did this years ago, coughing for an entire track in a song called "Cough Piece". | |

He's said he did that to do something different, and unexpected. U know how he likes to keep folk off-balance. LOL.....when I first saw this video, I was so upset, because I thought he might be coming down w/ a cold, and I couldn't stand the thought that he might be 'under the weather'! I read a review at the time the video came out that called that the only original moment in the video. Then it dissed his "Liza Minnelli" do. I think it was in People magazine.

It was done purposefully..during the time there was a tabloid rumor story that Prince was losing his voice and would have to end his career or something like that....i cracked up when i first saw the video but he wasn't speaking to the press so he never really explained it. | |

I remember during the premeire of the video on MTV, Mark Goodman said that he thought it was Prince's way of showing that the Purple Rain tour, etc. was taking it's toll on him. Actually i'm serious. They where discussing that this funk line and tune for Raspberry Berret was so funky that it was sick. So Prince took that and made a gesture. | |
