DOESN'T ANYBODY GET WHAT THIS ALBUM IS ABOUT? Geez.

First of all, The Rainbow Children was Prince getting to do an album exactly the way he wanted to. and the first album since he changed his name back to Prince. The subsequent tour and album afterward are further evidence of Prince's feeling of freedom.

Second, the album is spiritual/relgious in nature, but is also an autobiography.

Third, though The Rainbow Children and Lovesexy are both gospel albums, Lovesexy is about a place, and The Rainbow Children is a love story.

Fourth, if you take this album literally, YOU'RE MISSING THE POINT! While there are some very good questions posed on it, in such songs as The Everalasting Now and The Last December, it's on the same page as another track called Wedding Feast. HELLO?!?! It's supposed to be a fantasy by nature, just like Lovesexy.

Fifth, this is an album to be listened to without expectation, so people looking to compare it to anything from his past will lose out.

I may be the only person in the world besides Prince who gets this album. Pleasse go and listen, and listen without any pre-conceived notions of what a Prince album should sound like. Huh? After all, Prince didn't ask ANYONE to put their expectations on any of his work. If there's a standard at work, it's imposed by the LISTENERS, and no one else. HELLO?!?!

I think you're right about TRC failing conceptually but not musically. I think it's musically as good as anything he's done. But the overbearing concept of the album prevents it from being one of his very best. Lovesexy holds together better as an album (though Positivity has always stuck out to me), but I think TRC has just as many great songs.

I love TRC because it's goofy & creative like a Prince record from the 80's. None of his 90's stuff had that quality except maybe Graffiti Bridge. It makes sense that it's the return of "Prince." And while it has the goofiness of Lovesexy, it also has the big sound of Gold or Symbol. If only he hadn't included Darth Vader (which I actually don't mind) I think it might have been one of his best loved albums.
