Purple Rain Movie: Screenplay Flaw!!!

Always wondered this about the actual storyline:
If Billy wants to get rid of one group "I got three acts. I don't need four. So that means one of y'all got ta' go!" Why is Dez's band "The Modernaires" not included in the competition? If yall were the Kid wouldn't you just say: "Yo, man that Moderaire guy has one hit...why the fuck do I have to bust my ass to kick the Time's asses? Tell Dez to take his little new wave act to a battle with Duran Duran, motha fucka!" Just a thought.

Anyone else notice this flaw?

also when the Kid and Apolonia are leaving the "lake minetonka" scene, Apolonia's hair becomes dry instantly. It is wet when she says "I must have looked pretty rediculous" and then when she is on the back of his bike twenty seconds later her hair is soft dry and bouncy.

Perhaps Billy was just getting tired of The Kid and wanted to get rid of him; after all, Billy saw in-fighting among the band members and didn't appreciate the subject material of some of the songs (some were personal attacks) -- Billy was just making up some reasons why The Kid had to leave because he didn't want to deal with it anymore. The quality of songs (including lyrics) on the last night helped redeem The Revolution -- it was just what Billy wanted. Afterall, Billy Sparks is really the main character of the whole movie. Ever notice that everything revolves around him?

wink

edit: Apollonia's hair -- I let it go and think time has passed from one clip to the next.

YOUR DAD JUST SHOT HIMSELF IN THE DAYUM HEAD . WHY THE F@CK WOULD YOU WAKE UP THE NEXT MORNING AND REHEARSE A SONG?

and why is it that the band played the song perfectly upon debuting the song to the unsuspecting public (and to Lisa and Wendy's Surprise)?

It's like Luke having sexual feelings for Liea, and even kissing her in the Empire Strikes back, only to become her "brother" in "Return of the Jedi". Just way way too much to explain.

GOT DAYUM.

I think there is a back story in there somewhere--Why is Billy so pissed off at the Kid? He says "He ain't even pulling em in like he used to." The opening with Let's Go Crazy was packed! I think there is a back story worth examining where the Kid's dad Francis L. stole Billy's woman when he was still playing at the club and they both turned into crack heads (hence the shaking hands when Francis plays "Father's Song" on the piano). Now they are both cleaned up but broke and careerless. Billy has harbored that resentment ever since and has been looking for a reason to sabotage the Kid's career from the begining...
Hmm... razz
THAT's WHY THE MODERNAIRE's GO UNSCATHED!!!

No, more like the actor who played Billy was handed his lines 5 minutes before the shoot.

---

DIRECTOR ALBERT MAGNOLI

A first-time director on "Purple Rain," he never really cashed in. He directed "American Anthem" (1986), helped on Prince's splendid concert movie "Sign o' the Times" (1987) and finished up the Sly Stallone/Kurt Russell buddy picture "Tango & Cash" (1989) after another director started it. He directed Don Johnson's TV series "Nash Bridges" in 1996, the same year he did his last feature, "Dark Planet," a cheesy sci-fi flick starring Michael York.

I write my best songs when I got a million emotions stirring inside of me -- I don't have a prob with that. I wrote one the night my brother attempted suicide -- don't get me wrong, it ain't no happy song either. Also, true musicians don't play songs note for note, they improvise -- so I have no prob with the band playing "Purple Rain" the way they did -- Wendy & Lisa already had their part down, Bobby had the drums, The Kid knew what he was gonna do, and the others filled in.

Billy also complains The Kid after the performance of "The Beautiful Ones" ("What's this one song shit?") demanding a longer set, yet at the beginning of the movie he performs only "Let's Go Crazy". Essentially just a one song set too.

You might want to hit rewind -- Purple Rain doesn't start with "Let's Go Crazy" -- it starts off with the band fiddling around deciding what they want to play while the crowd is starting to come into the club, buying drinks, and some coming up to the stage to see The Revolution. The Kid goes to the microphone, looks back to his band and says, "Let's play that song we rehearsed earlier today." The music begins, and The Kid makes eye contact with his girlfriend sitting at a table chewing on a roast beef and cheddar sandwich. The Kid licks his lips and says, "This is for you, Vanity." Then he starts singing "Electric Intercourse." But while he's singing the song, he's actually checking out all the other fine ladies in the house. Vanity notices this and is visibly upset. A larger gentleman walks over to her and says, "I noticed you just lost your appetite. I guess you wouldn't mind if I finished up your sandwich for you, would ya?" She looks up at him like, "what the... ??" but she obliges and says, "Umm, yeah, sure, whatever... go ahead." During the rest of the song, we see The Kid flirting with the ladies, and every now and then we see Vanity talking with the man at her table gobbling up the rest of her roast beef and cheddar. As it turns out, he's a Motown Rec exec. By the end of the song, Vanity gets up and leaves with the man (she eventually goes on to make an album without The Kid called Wild Animal -- even does a movie of her own, The Last Dragon). The Kid sees her walking out, but he ain't too upset -- he was looking for something better anyway. He sure ain't gonna let this elevator bring him down, so he leads the band into playing the joyful "Let's Go Crazy." The Kid finishes the song with a blistering guitar finale, a la Jimi Hendrix, and then leaves the stage. Before the night is through, The Kid happens to bump into Apollonia and takes her home with him. Well... you know the rest.

Well, you'll have to get the DVD to find out, but don't forget to watch what happens after the credits. A lot of people seemed to have missed this since they walk out while the credits are rolling. Well anyway... After such a great night, The Kid is totally on a high... so he motors over to his best friend's house, Larry Graham. Larry's like, "Where you been, Kid? Hadn't seen ya in awhile. I've been wondering what's up. Been praying for ya, lil' brother." The Kid talks about how he lost Vanity. "Damn, she was fine, Kid. It was stupid to let her go." The Kid says, "But then I found Apollonia." Larry's like, "Arachnophobia? What's that gotta do with anything?" The Kid can barely hold his laughter, "No, Larry... Apollonia... she's my new bracelet now." Larry says, "Bracelet? Now that ain't no way to be talkin' 'bout your woman." Larry goes into a whole lecture about how a man should treat his woman proper. The Kid says, "Yeah, I know... I treated her real bad, but I think I won her back tonight." He goes on to tell Larry about his dad. "Yeah, shot himself in the head. The doctor says it looks like he's gonna make it, tho -- no brain damage or anything, can you believe it?" Larry says, "That's the grace of God, lil' brother. Let me tell you this..." Then Larry gets out his New World Translation and starts waxing spiritual with The Kid. The Kid wipes a tear from his eye, stands up and tells Larry, "Man, that really inspires me..." He points to the piano in Larry's living room and says, "Do you mind?" Larry says, "No, Kid -- not at all, go right ahead and let your feelings play." The movie fades to black, and then little by little we see some light begin to appear -- it lightens up just enough that we can see The Kid sitting at a white piano in the dark, and that's when The Kid starts singing "God" exactly as it appears on the B-side to "Purple Rain." At the end of the song, the screen goes black and we see purple letters coming together to form the sentence: "May u live 2 see The Dawn." Really cool. Ya gotta see it! Remember, you have to wait until the credits are over.

Oh yeah, the all-star Christmas tribute! Andre Cymone appears right at the end of "God" and does a duet with Prince called "The Dance Electric" -- and during the song, all the cast members walk on stage with them, holding hands and hugging each other while they sing along to the chorus: Dance the Dance Electric / The rhythm is love and love is blind / Love your enemies / There isn't much time, there isn't much time It is so funky, especially with James Brown popping in every now and then and saying, "Good Gawd!" followed up by Larry Graham singing, "Yes, He is!" and then Prince finishes it by having the audience repeat after him, "Good God, Great God, Jehovah God!" The house lights come on and Watchtower tracts fall from the ceiling. It looks like Jellybean gets hit in the face with one and has a papercut on his nose. Anyway, a good time was had by all.
