Man that bullshit, your situation must have been unique. For the most Prince was revered here in Houston and in the Black community. We were all crazy about Prince and that whole Minneapolis scene we found fascinating and awesome. We had many brutha's wearing trench coats with the rude boy pin. My friends and myself at the time we were all dressing up like The Time. I still have my pair of Stacy Adams at my parents house. It really brings back some incredible memories!!!

Yes, Video Soul on BET was good for playing P's videos as well as his protege's and artists on Paisley Park Records back in the 80's, but that was because Donnie Simpson was a fan and he had a lot of pull back then. Once he left, BET treated P just like MTV always did; they rarely played his vids and showed him no support.

I feel the same way about this whole "jump on the bandwagon" thing. Back in the 80's if you told black people(I am black also so i can say it) you were a MJ fan, they were like "ok, me to." or "ok, whatever"; but if you told them you were a Prince fan(especially if you are a guy) you were thought of as gay or weak. None of these artists now(Outkast for example) would have ever admitted in the hood that they were a P fan. They would get their butts kicked for that.

Although I was just a little child in the 80's(1-6 years old), I know that Prince was not the person to be into if you were black in New York. He was weird, girly and wore high heels. People werent trying to hear you. disbelief Besides, how dare you not like MJ more than Prince during the 80's! omfg

Yes, I completely agree with the above. I hate how everyone suddenly loves him and thinks he's the greatest. MTV makes me want to puke too. They nominate him for an award the other night. WTF! Talk about jumping on the band wagon. I also think BET sucks. It gets worse every month IMO. That girl Free needs to get a stylist. Her clothes are absolutely awful. Great post!!! U R totally right on with this 1... I can relate 2 u because most of my friends were into MJ. Luv me some Michael, but luv P much more. I was always told by friends that he was a fag, or no ones feeling him. Me being female I did not experience it like u men did, but being a black female we had situations 2 deal with being a P fan also. 2 this day I have friends that don’t like him, but respect his talent. So finding NPG, Housequake and Prince.Org has been a blessing. Prince was dissed by a lot of blacks back in the day. Now that P is back, everyone has become die heart Prince Fans. They claim they know all about him. They don’t have a clue. Everyone’s talking about how talented he is, he’s this, he’s that u name it. Yeaaaaa right! Where were u be4 he showed up on the Grammy’s?

1 of my girl friends has always hated Prince. I showed her the video of the ? of U and she loved it. She calls me 1 day from her car and have me listen 2 this music, I couldn’t believe it, she was listening 2 News, she loved it. She had just purchased Musicology, News, and Emancipation. I have had the pleasure of seeing P in person since 1981 when he opened 4 Mick Jagger and the Rollingstones. I have seen Prince every time he has come to Los Angeles. The last 5 times I have gone along, and I prefer it that way. Once I get 2 the concert, there I am with the cream of the crop. There r no fans like Prince fans. LOL!!!

You were at the concert when P opened for the Stones. Is it true he was booed offstage and people were actually throwing things at him? What about the noise at the end of "Pop Life"? It is rumoured that is from that concert. Can U confirm?

I agree with you prettymansson!

I remember saying, "PRINCE is fine," and my cousins would always say, "He acts too white; he's gay," or they'd say, "Why do you like PRINCE, he's rock."

Even today, black people (I'm black, too) wince when I say I like PRINCE. They say, "Yeah, I like Insatiable" or they'll say, "Call My Name" is a nice track. They pick the most obvious R&B sounding song. But if I play "Bambi" while they are around, it's like "Turn that white music off." And I'm thinking, "Huh? White music?"

I don't know why, but maybe it's because most black people are super religious and that is why they wince when I like PRINCE. MY hairstylist called be crazy. She said to my sister and I, "You-all need to go to church. Prince is a freak!"

And when my friend said, "Prince is too rock-ish for me." I was shocked. Sometimes he rocks, sometimes he's R&B, sometimes he's blues. She said the same thing about Sade, "Being too white for her." -- where did she get that? Sade? Too white?

I don't get it. My cousins think I'm a kook because of my musical tastes. Just cos I have Prince, Aerosmith, Sade and R.L. Burnside in my CD collection and not R. Kelly, they think I'm cuckoo.

I would love if BET had BET2, a channel where they played PRINCE videos and Sade Videos around the clock.

From some article I read a while back:

Prince kept things heated up with the 1981 album "Controversy" _ and he caused one when he opened two Rolling Stones shows in L.A.

- DEZ DICKERSON: It was [bassist] Mark Brown's second show with us. Here's this 18-year-old kid who looks like a deer in the headlights, in front of 110,000 people at the L.A. Coliseum. Prince was in his full "Dirty Mind" regalia with the bikini and trench coat. Halfway through the set, those natives got restless. They started taking their Coke cups and throwing them onstage. I look around, and Prince is gone. So I signaled to the rest of the guys: Let's do likewise. Then more stuff got thrown.

Prince flew back to Minneapolis that night. Mick Jagger phoned to no avail. Then Dickerson called and told him of playing in biker bars "where no black man had ever set foot before. You can't let them run you out of town." Prince returned for Round 2.

Maybe it's just the area I grew up in, but noone ever slammed me for liking Prince in the 80's. Everyone dressed like women in the 80's. Practically every rock band looked like a herd of transvestites, so Prince in heels with hoop earings really wasn't that taboo.

Prince, Madonna, MJ, Cindi Lauper, etc... were all superstars to us...

If anything, it was the 90's when people started teasin me for liking prince, and I started noticing more cracks than compliments in the media.

I can't talk to black people about Prince. Just last week, at my new job, someone (a white guy) was playing Prince and I was sooooo happy, so I went over to him and said: Oh, I love Prince and we started talking about how many concerts we've attended and etc., but my BLACK COWORKER was so upset that I was talking to a white guy about Prince. Later that day, she said to me: "why were you talking to that guy about Prince? I can't stand that Prince."

OH MY, I was so pissed! I said to myself: shut up and go back to your desk and listen to your gospel. Black people, to me, seem to confine themselves when it comes to music. God forbid If you listen to something outside of hip hop (double blah!) or r&b (triple blah!)-- I am sooooo glad I never limited myself to things BLACKS are supposed to do or supposed to listen to...GOD WHAT A BORING LIFE THAT WOULD BE!!

so for all you Prince FANS that truly love Prince when he is ROCK, when he is NOT, when he is fast when he is slow...you're cool with me! for those prince "fans" who only like his "black sounding stuff" don't even try to befriend me!!!

I can only hope that you are NOT Black with your gross overgeneralizations and stereotypes of ALL Black people. Until you have met ALL Black people, a statement like that holds absolutely no water whatsoever. I don't care if you met 1 or 20 people like your co-worker, making blanket statements like that is never acceptable. The thing that is hilarious is that you would probably be very pissed if someone who wasn't Black made statements like yours.

NO, SCREAMSOFPASSION! I WOULD NOT BE MAD IF SOMEONE NON-BLACK SAID WHAT I SAID. IF YOU KNEW ME AT ALL THEN U KNOW I HAVE ISSUES ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE AND HOW THEY LIMIT THEMSELVES. I am "black" for your information and I have encountered way too many black people who "diss" me because I am not "ghetto" enough or "black enough." I am so sick of it.

AND AGAIN, i would not be pissed if a non-black said this to me, I HAVE HAD SIMILAR STUFF SAID TO ME, by all races, about the black race and it doesn't piss me off most times because I agree.
