but, ya know - i seem to remember BET's video soul being very good to prince - i used to watch that show in the '80s and they'd play lots of prince stuff that i never got to see on MTV...especially related artist stuff like the family and sheila and stuff like that. donnie simpson was a big fan. nod

So true, but now, all you hear on BET is rap...why should BET jump on the bandwagon now....they hardly ever played his latest videoes unless he sent it to them...and then it was on rotation for a little while!!!
mad mad sad sad

Oh, and when I was growing up in small town Louisiana (just outside of New Orleans), black people LOVED Prince. The black radio stations always played all of his songs, including b-sides. We even had our local Prince clones, who wore pirate shirts and purple all the time. One of the more "Prince'd out" ones even wrote music, and he would come to the area churches and play and sing his compostiions all the time.

smile What a great story.

And everyone supported him, even though we all recognized he was....well....no Prince. And all of these people were black. The idea that anybody gave grief to Prince fans just seems so odd to me, as I never experienced it growing up.

Even now, everytime I go home I still catch Prince songs being played on Q93.3, the main urban station. They were even rocking Musicology on the regular. In fact, last time I was home, I caught Anotherloverhole..., Hot Thang, and If I Was Your Girlfriend, all on one Saturday.

Where did you grow up? I'm in New Orleans and my mom's people are from St. James, LA. I love that the urban radio stations/DJs here have always supported Prince. I remember back in the day FM98 had a weekend mix show and included some Wendy & Lisa ("Are You My Baby"). But you heard "Anotherloverhole..."?!?! That's pretty cool.

Do you remember WAIL 105 FM in the early 80s?

LittleLamb said:[quote]I can't talk to black people about Prince. Just last week, at my new job, someone (a white guy) was playing Prince and I was sooooo happy, so I went over to him and said: Oh, I love Prince and we started talking about how many concerts we've attended and etc., but my BLACK COWORKER was so upset that I was talking to a white guy about Prince. Later that day, she said to me: "why were you talking to that guy about Prince? I can't stand that Prince."

OH MY, I was so pissed! I said to myself: shut up and go back to your desk and listen to your gospel. Black people, to me, seem to confine themselves when it comes to music. God forbid If you listen to something outside of hip hop (double blah!) or r&b (triple blah!)-- I am sooooo glad I never limited myself to things BLACKS are supposed to do or supposed to listen to...GOD WHAT A BORING LIFE THAT WOULD BE!!

so for all you Prince FANS that truly love Prince when he is ROCK, when he is NOT, when he is fast when he is slow...you're cool with me! for those prince "fans" who only like his "black sounding stuff" don't even try to befriend me!!!

...yup, that is so true! ... i mean i like all types of Prince's music ( i'm black too)and not just the "black sounding" stuff... some people just aren't very openminded and only wanna listen 2 the "gangsta" stuff or the ghetto hip hop crap ..or whatever!

Puh-leease!!
Plenty of blackfolk LOVED and still LOVE Prince. How do you think he got this far?! Black radio in Detroit played him ALL D TIME! Other black radio stations with black listeners across the country kept their dials tuned in for Prince.
Let's not get it all twisted 'cause some hated/didn't understand the clothes, etc. Some hatin' went on amongst all colors - not just blackfolk.
Peace
