Yes and no!
But really, no. Cause, far as we know, he isn't gay. With the news being so gotcha!, you woulda thought they woulda caughta, Prince. He truly is an icon to gay people for his lyrics. Such as in Controvery: "Am I black or white, am I straight or gay." Dang, for lyrics like that in early 80s, that was bold. Not to mention, fact he wore the bare outfits he did, like when he was boo'ed off stage opening for the Stones. Imagine that, opening up for arguably one of the best groups of time and making your break at the big time saying: "F it, I'm going out in the nude with nothing but leggings and high heeled shoes to these white folk!" Then there is "If I Was Your Girlfriend." But not the latter, probably was the earlier that grabbed gay's attention.

Hey! Make sure you ain't laughing at the song, cause its great!!!!
Truth is, its a song about a man reversing the situation on his girl. Ya know? Its like this. Quit ya bitching, cause if I was your girlfriend and you were the man, you would see it my way. Nevertheless, he does get into detail, but hey, he is a writer, dig?

I personally see him as a huge gay icon. I'm not saying he is gay by no means, I am saying that because of his look, style, and gestures, he has a very gay look. The thing I love about Prince though, that makes him stand out from anyone else, is the way he carries himself. He looks the gay part but his music and attitude breaks down all the "weak" stereotypes that have been placed on gay people.
Prince is a wonderful "strong" role model for gay people but I am the ONLY person that sees it that way. I don't know ANY gay people that even like Prince. They all call him "Miss Prince" and don't care for his music at all. All of their role models are females such as Whitney Houston or Janet Jackson. Gay people do have one "strong" role model though, Madonna. Madonna, like Prince, has been full of controversy and has done as she pleased whether people like it or not. She has broken all the rules and done her own thing. I can relate more to Prince than Madonna though because he is male. I am not a woman and have no desire to be a woman. Too many gay males are into everything female, would like to be a female, and refer to themselves as "girl". I have referred to myself as "bitch" or "whore" but NEVER "girl". "Bitch" and "whore" are attitude and have nothing to do with gender. "Girl" has everything to do with gender and gives straight people the misconception that all gay people are "sick" and would like to get sex changes. Once again making them "weak" and a group of people to be fucked with. Like I said, I have always viewed Prince as THE gay role model whether he is gay or not.....but I am the ONLY one. If you want to see a gay dance floor clear....throw on a Prince record. [Edited 9/2/04 3:41am] Andy is a four letter word.

I propose that he is an UBER-Gay icon.
When gay men post their stats on dataing forums, staright-acting is just code for "I ain't nothin' like Prince." ![]()

See that's what you people don't realize, you don't have to be gay to be an icon to the gay people. Thank you vainandy

Well, we can all interpret songs how we like, that's one of the fun things about music, but it's really about Prince's relationship with Susannah, and him being jealous of the closeness she had with Wendy, (and her female friends etc). The "Girlfriend" in the title doesn't refer to a male/female sexual relationship, it refers to female friendship - you know, women often call their female friends 'girlfriends'.

i think prince's appeal to gay folks has more to do with his play on masculinity/femininity and genderfuck than it has to do with heterosexuality or homosexuality or even campiness on any level. for me, i never found myself attracted to prince and i always was mindful of the fact that his songs could only speak to my experience so much because he's singing about loving women (though of course there's a universality in many of his love songs), but where i could really relate and get a lot from his work (particularly the first half of his career) was where he just didn't give a flying fuck about how he was viewed - he'd create a female alter ego and not feel any need at all to explain it. he'd throw all kinds of gay innuendo in "under the cherry moon" - just because! he'd dress girlier than most girls and wear more make-up than most drag queens, and STILL he'd have all the women screaming at his concerts.
maybe he has gay cred because he's the last true glam rock star, i dunno.

![]() *blurgh* I hate that term, it's silly. I agree with what Anxiety said - he's not a gay icon in the classic sense, but the values he endorsed in his songs in the first half of his career just spoke to me, Prince's attitude of do what you want, how you want, as long as no-one's getting hurt and you're having fun, does it really matter who you are, what you wear, etc. Labels just separate us. Great ideology ![]()

I don't want to make an issue of it, but some of us don't like the term "the gays". I'd like to think if I was Black, the sentence "All the blacks I know don't like Prince at all... in fact, I'd say their taste in music in general sucks! These are just the blacks I know, though..." - would also cause me to roll my eyes.

3 of my friends are gay and none of them are Prince fans. 1 of them downright hates the guy and his music. He always complains how all his music sounds the same (huh?) while ALL this dude listens to is techno with one beat repeating 50 times. He also complains that Prince makes too much "church music" aka songs about God. I always tell him he's the only gay man I know who has no taste (he also hates on the Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd, and The Clash...so that just proves it).
Obviously not all gay people hate Prince but I don't think he's an icon like Cher or Madonna.

I think Princes oozes SEX vibes and no matter if you're straight or gay you either love him for it or hate him for it. I think he has a way with wardrobe and haristyles like no other.
It's like, people think that Denzel is an icon to females. He really does not impress me. So I would think that some gay people like Prince, just like some would not.
