BATMAN & NEWPOWERSOUL

I've noticed that nobody mentions anything about the Batman or NewPowerSoul albums, and i want to know why. What do y'all think about them?

For me, Batman represented the beginning of the end of Prince's creative peak. At this point, his albums became hit or miss and he started following trends instead of starting them.

Newpowersoul... disbelief
That album needed Jesus, Jehovah, Buddah, Allah and Ralph. NPS represents another tipping point when I was unsure if Prince would captivate me musically again. Thank God for the The Rainbow Children.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes. All of what he said.

Two of his most underated albums.

I can't see it when people say Batman was the beginning of his creative downfall. I think it's just another step foward. It's got the great songs of SOTT and the spiritualism of Lovesexy, and also some really sparse experimentalism (The Future, Batdance). For me, Graffiti Bridge was the beginning (because most of the tracks on that album were older tracks anyway).

I enjoyed "Batman" but the thing I didn't like about that album is that "The Future" and "Electric Chair" both sounded like parts of "Batdance". "Scandalous" is the only thing that really stands out on that album.

As for "New Power Soul", I only like one or two tracks on that album. He pissed me off with that album for selling out to hip hop. "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" is another album I think he sold out on for using other artists on that album. He's not Michael Jackson, he doesn't need the help of other artists to make a good album.

"The Rainbow Children" is not one of my favorites but I think he got back on track (in his own way). He started back doing his own thing, whether the world likes it or not. I've always admired him for being an individual and even though "The Rainbow Children" is not one of my favorites, he finally returned to being an individual. He's a man that truly loves music so he has to please himself by making music of whatever phase he may be going through at the time. He has please himself because he can't please everyone. If he wanted to please me, he would make "1999 - Part II". lol
