music played at the party... Wang Chung "Dance Hall Days" Madonna "Lucky Star" The Time "Ice Cream Castles" They also played (if you listened carefully) Scritti Politti's "Wood Beez". Awesome track! You could also hear Depeche Mode in the back ground.Kinda weird they wouldn't have been playin strictly PRINCE stuff.

2 things:
1/ Lisa says Darling Nikki is about ????? - it's censored. What does everyone thing. 2/ What extra's would you have liked to see? Any deleted scenes would obviously have been very cool but I think the best possible extra would have been the First Avenue gig from '83 that formed the basis of the recordings of Purple Rain/ I Would Die 4 U and Baby I'm A Star on the album.

Is anyone concerned, or noticed, that the new edition of PURPLE RAIN doesn't seem to be the original widescreen as seen in the theatres? I think that Warner Bros screwed up and ended up cropping a pan and scan version of the movie.
Compare your copy of PURPLE RAIN on videotape or the old DVD, and you will notice that there is more picture information on the top and bottom. The new PURPLE RAIN is a cleaned up and matted version of the old. I always thought that the old PURPLE RAIN was a pan and scan or cropped version of the original film. If so, then the new version crops even more video information. I distinctly recall seeing more of Wendy and Brown Mark during the BABY I'M A STAR scenes when the movie played in theatres. Was PURPLE RAIN originally filmed in a 1:33 ratio then matted for theatre showings? Or was it a true widescreen movie cropped for home video? Does anyone remember?

Ok i just watched the extras and here is my input:
1) At the Party why the fuck didn't Wendy and Lisa hold the microphones up to there mouthes after being told like 5 times? 2) Sheila E seemed kinda rude when being interviewed at the party. 3) What name did they censor out when Lisa told Wendy who Darling Nikki was about? 4) Prince's music videos weren't what i expected. The only good ones were IWDFY/BIAS and TMWY and When doves cry

the thing that stuck out the most to me during the first ave. featurette: the lights were ON. that's like the 2nd time i've ever seen the mainroom with the lights on--i'm used to it being all dim n'smoky.

To see something that you havent seen in 20 years really brings you back. I was in high school again just amazed at how good the movie and album were. This time watching the movie with the voice over dialogue really made me appreciate how good the movie was. Not one bad song i it, including the score, even "Modrnaire" was cool.. The acting was better in some parts than I remembered, especially Prince with his dad, and this time I really paid attention to how they set up Morris and Jerome's characters and how original and funny those guys are. ______________________________________________

[b] Ok, the best part of this had to be the extra videos with this ranking:
1. Baby Im A Star/ I would die 4u.....this is the MAN. it reminded me of when i was 7 yrs old wanting to be like him lol...and then in 4th grade later TRYING to be him for Holloween, but had to settle for a Micheal Jackson knock-off zipper jacket and spray paint (I was "Psuedo Rock star) 2. Sex Shooter.... Boy, Apples was fine... but i remember this video in its entirety on Friday Nite Videos on NBC. never knew what she was sayin in spanish though..and I wish the dance moves were a lil more SYNCHRONIZED...(not too mujch help for the voice) 3. Let's Go Crazy. Nuff Said. Tsk Tsk, What a pity...sometimes Life can be so shitty....

Well I had MTV then and am so old that I remember the day on MTV news that they *ANNOUNCED* that Prince was making a movie and was looking for a leading lady, and them giving out the places and times that open casting calls were being held and a physical description/age range of the type of woman they were looking for. It's so weird cuz I even totally remember where I was sitting in my living room while I was watching that bit of MTV news, and how much I'd wished I were: 1) old enough to audition (like I had any scrap of acting ability anyway!! ) and 2) that I fit the physical description. Gosh that all seems like so long ago but then again, it doesn't.

AGREED! I just finished watching it...a lot of things I didn't know...this is so far the best part of the "Bonus" DVD...Wendy and Lisa reveal who the "Purple Rain Lady" is. Also loved laughing at the "Sexshooter"video...I don't ever recall MTV playing Apollonia's phone conversation before the song starts...of course that was like 20 years ago and I was only 9 so I could be wrong! i dont have it yet...please tell who the purple rain girl is!!!!!

On your DVD:
Go to scene 23 (the scene where The Kid's Father is about to shoot himself) Turn up the audio... When Prince walks in the door, you should hear music, the door creak, and the click of the gun... On the DVD I have...the audio has dropped out... On my friend's DVD....the audio is dropped out...she returned it and it was still mute on that scene... The audio comes back on when the gun goes off... Anyone else notice it? [Edited 9/3/04 9:06am]

It doesn't come back on until just before he flicks the lightswitch. Should I go buy that old DVD now? hehe

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but did anyone else notice that Apollonia's height was listed as 5'6"? It has been 20 years since I have seen PR, so I never noticed that. There is no way Apples could be 5'6" when she was wearing heels through out the movie. She has to be Prince's height or at the most an inch or two taller.
Anywho, I watched it with my sister today. She will be 22 in a few weeks and she told me today that she loves PR and watches it everytime if comes on. I had no idea. She also said that her ex's mother watches PR all the time and will stand and dance throught the whole movie. My mom remembered going to see PR and taking my sister, who was 2 at the time, with her. My sis said that was probably why she loves P R..

Great job on the Special Edition I think-like most people, deleted scenes would be welcome, but I loved the documentaries. The fact they're in widescreen format as well is definitely a welcome touch.
Wendy and Lisa to me are the best part of the commentaries-with Wendy's insights on only seeing him with a tear in his eyes a few times, the homeless woman story and the truth on if they wrote "Purple Rain". Wendy-"No, but we did help!" Albert Magnoli seemed to be pretty emotional about the whole thing-when was his last hit? He had some great insights I think (whether you think he had to put the tears in during a cutaway), as did everyone-I loved seeing Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis in there. Gotta admit the magic of it all definitely comes through-First Avenue, the entire time that they captured, the fact that the performance segments were filmed in a week! (Practically unheard of.) I teared up a few times, I'm not ashamed to admit-everybody's got their own Purple Rain discovery period. I wish Morris, Jerome and Apollonia were involved some but great job otherwise. Any comments on how the quality of the videos has aged (how pristine)? One thing stays with me though watching the documentaries though. Anybody else notice how much Dr. Fink looks like Peter Buck from R.E.M.? The Dr. should see you now.
