I thought it was her. I'm a fan of some of their stuff . I still think she was high or something...chatting a mile a minute...but then maybe she was probably promoting there...getting a buzz going. They became MTV darlings very shortly after that.

I was a bit disappointed when I didn't see Apollonia in any of the short documentaries.She always gave intelligent insight re the Purple Rain days.

Loved the Special Features. The only thing I was disappointed with was they didn't include the Prince/Sheila E. performance at the premier. I never saw it as was really hoping it would be included.

Wendy and Lisa were GREAT. It really took me back.

Also watched the film with the commentary. Really interesting stuff. It really made me want to check out all of the deleted scenes. I never knew a backstage scene had been shot with dialouge between Apollonia and Susan and Brenda after they performed at The Taste and how there were Firebreathers and Jugglers back there (completely changed my idea of what The Taste was about).

The whole Minnesota/Los Angeles thing was interesting and brought things to my attention I never noticed before.

I wish they could have interviewed Apollonia and Morris but overall I give it a A-.

Note- I was reminded how beatiful Apollonia was back then. My, My, My!!!!!

Our boy is the absolute picture perfect image of James B. himself during this jam.

OK...I've just found the first goof-up on this DVD.

When the boys from The Time are taking the stage for "Jungle Love"....you hear Jerome say "So Sexy" before Morris even says anything to Prince.Then Jerome steps up and you hear it when your supposed to.I never noticed it before...so I wonder if it's something they screwed up in the remastering process.

Yep, to bad they didn't have interview from Apples, Morris, Jerome.

I thought they talked to them on the MTV interview. That whole interview was really,really bad. Did you seen Little Richard get on his holy soap box and start preaching. Boy that was not what everyone wanted to hear. And then.....lol..... Eddie Murphy start repeating him.

That was the only great part of the interview.

I'm watching it right now. But I'm only watching the music videos though tonight.

I think I'll watch the movie Friday.

This is a lot of stuff to take in, and I can't do it all in just one night, you know.

This performance of "Baby I'm A Star" has got to be one of his best EVER!!!!!

Watch the performance seen of "The Bird." You can see Wally Brooks and Gregg, later to show up as side men in SOTT. He has the fur hat on.
Also a bit of trivia, the front dancers on the balcony seen in the opening of "jungle love" are the game boyz.

There are so many wonderful moments in the documentaries that I just sat there enthralled the entire time. But here are two comments that I particularly enjoyed:

Wendy: "When he wrote 'Beautiful Ones' we were in L.A. and I remember going, 'You're so totally in tune right now with your creativity. You're so on a roll.' I just remember hearing that tune and thinking to myself ...[struggles to find the words]... 'You are so good; you are so good at this.'"

Lisa: "Before we'd shoot [the concert footage] he'd turn around to us and he'd be like, 'We're gonna kill it. Everybody go for it.' [Lisa and Wendy both laugh] We'd be like, 'Yeah, don't worry man, we're there...we're for ya!' It was good camaraderie."

Wendy: "Yeah, it was."

Lisa: "Good spirit."

It was moving to see W&L express such love and admiration for Prince and their time with him. And when Wendy picked up the acoustic guitar at one point to demonstrate how she worked out her chord changes on "Purple Rain," I was done!

I watched the clips for Take Me With U and I Would Die 4 U/Baby I'm A Star this afternoon, which I watched INTO THE GROUND when they first came out, but I hadn't sat down and watched in years...and wow, what can I say...

For those of you who haven't seen these live clips in a few years and who feel like "ugh, I've seen these videos so many times, I'm burnt out on 'em and I'm not gonna watch 'em", do yourself a favor and pop these babies into the DVD player one more time.

I was really amazed at how different a creature Prince was in 1984 than he is now. It's not to say that he was a better or worse performer, but his energy was just SO different - completely manic and raw and off the chart - the whole second part of the "Baby I'm A Star" live clip is quite simply over the top...he had every single musician on that stage making the funk face (except for Lisa, of course, but that would just be weird) and he was flailing around like a funky fish outta water, completely 100% GONE to the world, totally lost in the music.

With all the bootlegs and web site tomfoolery and books and parties and thisses and thats, I think I may have completely forgotten that it was this kind of freakshow funky manic energy that drew me in to all things Prince in the first place. How a dude could start out prancing on stage in a shawl and end up half naked and ejaculating his guitar all over an audience was a brand of audacity and spectacle that you could only get from ol' boy...and all the stuff in between those two moments made you forget that this isn't exactly what people do on planet Earth.

I also checked out the 1st Avenue documentary today, expecting it to be fairly boring...and it wasn't! It was a great little feature. I'm in favor of all the extras on the PR DVD...I still have to check out the commentary track w/ the movie (which, from what little I've seen of it, looks to be in GREAT shape).

Like I said in the Under The Cherry Moon/Graffiti Bridge thread, I bought all three DVD's on Wednesday, and watched them all today. I had seen Purple Rain before, many times, and it never ceases to disappoint me, so I mainly checked out the special features.

The First Avenue documentary was nice to watch, as well as Riffs, Ruffles, and a Revolution. Like most of you said, the Backstage Pass was all worth buying it. That cleared up so many things I had been wondering about, and it was just nice to watch everybody's commentary on making the film. I didn't like the MTV Premiere; I thought that was a bit boring. And, as we all know, I loved the videos. But, what I was disappointed about was that they left the deleted scenes out, and the packaging with no booklet didn't help either.

So, that's all I'm going to say, because we all know that this movie gets an A anyways.

I watched the First Avenue doc and the Backstage Pass yesterday. Very cool to see W&L, Bobby and Fink... but whahappun to Brown Mark? He has the one close up in the movie and no lines... maybe he's bitter?

Then I checked out Sex Shooter because people mentioned it. Man, that was DUMB!!! The part at the beginning when she's on the phone and is yelling at him in spanish was kinda funny. She said he's always borrowing her clothes and he doesn't return them...



Then I watched Take Me With You and I LOVE the part when he sings low.

And then I just had to jump to my favorite scenes in the movie, because I could: The password and Wendy's monlogue.

"You should know by now that we wouldn't hurt you... Love it.


Oh yeah, and... The Purple Rain Lady... I wonder what happened to her.

The video is taken from "Live At The Tokyo Dome", which was recorded in 1990 as part of the "Nude" tour. Several live videos from this officially unrealeased concert were played in the summer of 1990 on "Friday Night Videos" on NBC, and also on MTV.
Those were "When Doves Cry" (Great funky middle part where Rosie Gaines goes off and Prince is bouncing all over the place), and "Alphabet Street".
I strongly discourage those from seeking out the video bootleg of the show, which also features tremendous versions of "Bambi", "Partyman", and "Baby I'm A Star" during which Rosie tears into Aretha's "Respect".
