Actually, I love it.....But when I 1st get a new album,

I give it a listen,and think "Ahhh, its okay" then I go

back to the ones I'm currently into.....occasionally

over the course of a few months, popping in the "new" one

trying to get into it.....still thinking the same thing....

not really giving it much of a chance.....then

after abouut 6 months or so of dabbling, it all comes

together and I "get it"....and I realize it's tha Bomb!!

The most recent example: The Rainbow Children

Got it in October/November.....listened to it a handfull of

times since then and never listened to it all

the way through until about 2 weeks ago.....now it's all I

I play...constantly.




This has happened with almost all his music.....I hardly

ever skip a track on any cd of his ....I listen from

beginning to end and absolutely love every second of every song.....




My Questions are: Am I alone on this?.....Does this

happen to any of you?





I think it does, and that's why most of the rest of the

world doesn't and will never "get it" beyond the instantly

catchy radio hits.....because they are not willing

to do The Work!


One Last Question: for those of you who bought TRC

in the store,..... Is your copy Tracked or 1 Track from

beginning to end, like the Download?

I think there are others who have the same "work to do".
Mine is tracked.

TRC is the only Prince album I ever bought as soon as it came out and it is also the only one I liked as soon as I listened to it. His albums have to grown on me usually after being in my collection 3 - 6 months (even 2 years for LOVESEXY) from the orignal release.

Thing is, now I'm kinda tired of TRC!

Yeah it happens with me sometimes.It certainly happened with "Rainbow Children".My copy is tracked. And I'm in the phase of having bought but not really listening to "Chaoz And Disorder".Well besides the title track, the single and "I Rock Therefore I Am"

Hi there.. sorry but I ain't like that, after the second time I've heard the album I'm hooked and this is a master-pic.. BUT first time I ever heard Prince music I had it like that.. about 6 month after I was hooked.. hehe but now I dig it (nearly always) after I heard it the first time!

Same thing always happens to me. I put Come on the shelf and then discovered about 3 years later that I absolutely love it. Also Parade was ignored for a while. And Chaos & Disorder. And The Gold Experience. The only one I liked wholeheartedly from the beginning was Dirty Mind.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I now feel like New Power Soul is starting to get to me....

Prince is just always ahead of us, that's all. Maybe there is something immature about music you like right away -- the artist should lead you somewhere, not come down to your level.

I was going to say the same thing about Lovesexy. I listened once and set it aside. Now I love it. TRC had the same effect on me. That narrators voice turned me off instantly. After seeing the songs played live in Buffalo though TRC took on a whole new meaning for me and now I love it.

I think that one of my initial problems with TRC was that I had the downloaded, untracked version. I burned it to cd and put my own track breaks in so I could skip around and that made a big difference for my enjoyment. Don't ask why, it just did.

I'm defnitely geting into TRC more. There's alot to listen to on Prince albums and that's why his albums have such lasting power. If it wasn't for that damn slowed down voice this album would be so much better.

Something that is catchy right off the bat gets old quik! With P's music it grows on you...Like Rave (which is GREAT), Play it with phones on a few times and then tell me it isn't a great piece of work?!

I think it takes more time because of the layers and the complexity, not to mention the vast variety he incorporates. You can't catch all of it in one shot. I hear new things on Parade to this day!

It's what I love about his music...all the colors...

I usually love Princes music the first time I hear it. The only album I was stunned by is Around The World In A Day. The little scream at the beginning of the cd threw me off completely at first. But to this day it is one of my favorite Prince cds.

Actually, I liked TRC right away...however, aside from that - it marked the first time, for me, that the new Prince album was the only Prince album I was listening to for a good little while after an album release... After I downloaded TRC, it must have been at least a week of nothing but... LoL But, I'm okay now...

If you get it from the regular retailers like I did the cd is tracked.

Some yes, some no.

Albums I liked straight off:
ATWIAD, Parade, Batman, GB (yes I loved it at first), symbol, 1999, PR, Controversy, Lovesexy, Truth, CB, C&D

Albums that grew:
TGE, Dirty Mind, Prince, 4U, Come

Albums that some trax grabbed me by the balls, and others worked there way in over time:
SOTT, Emancipation

Albums that I still don't really get:
NPS, Rave, D&P (apart from Gett Off, of course).

I do agree that almost all Prince releases improve with multiple listens and that there is always more to discover even after the hundred-thousandth spin. Even the disks that get me first go, it's because they are exciting, new and different and promise worlds 2 b discovered.

I don't like TRC, not even now! So what? Maybe, maybe...

Thats usually the case fo rme too. i get it and im hopeful it will be "IT" in terms of critical acclaim, singles, etc etc. but lately i give up hope after a few weeks, but that doesnt diminish my appreciation of an album.

It usally takes me a few months to get into it, but with albums like Gold it took me a few years to really dig that album.


I think P fans have a tendency to compare everyhting with the past. Like he said his only competition is him in the past, and when I got gold and heard the live stuff, i wanted the old Prince...now i crave the Gold era...whatever

I am the same way, when I put in a new Prince CD if I like it right away I get scared because I think I will get sick of it. So if I don't dig right away I don't dismiss it because I know I will find somewhere in the music what I love about Prince. Than like you said it all comes together.
I was in the middle with TRC but I really enjoy it now, like an old pair of jeans:)

Ohh and to the fact i couldnt read the lyric sheet lol. I came back to it in the summer of '88 when i had outplayed all his other albums and i fell in love with it.

Ive been doing this since around the world came out...I buy the album...listen..and take a few weeks to "get it",,,but not months...just a few weeks at the most..TRC & Lovesexy took the longest...

Both of those albums, to me, are the kind where I don't play individual tracks. If I start playing it, I listen all the way through.

Pfunkjazz, I agree with you. TRC was probably the first album that I liked all songs in the first listening. I remember that I liked some songs of previous albums like ´Billy Jack Bitch´ and ´Shh` when I first listened to them, but TRC was the first ALBUM
I wont forget this experience so soon. I put some earphones on and just enjoyed the music. It was late at night, and I got so enthusiasmed that it took me some hours to sleep (believe me, I usually sleep easily)

Usually, I get a new Prince album the instant it hits the shops. Then I listen 2 it constantly 4 about 3 weeks and then I lose interest completely.

But when a new album is reported 2 B released in a few month's time, I start 2 listen 2 the last album again 2 bridge that gap. Same thing every time.

I don't think these albums lack hit-singles or an instant sound that grabs your attention. Because they all do have those kind of songs or vibes. It's just that when U give them a quick listen, they sound good.

But after that U start 2 notice the more [intricate] details in the songs. No one makes ballads like Prince with as much attention 2 detail. The ammount of sounds, riffs, licks, plucks and twangs imbedded in the music of a single Prince album could cover a band like 'U2' a lifetime.

That's what's so good about most of those albums. Even if he's got a melody that's amazingly beautiful, he might just insert it at the very end of the song, when it's allready fading. And then when U listen 2 Ur headphones and crank up the volume, U hear this really beautiful instrumentation which he could've saved 4 an entire new song. U know?

Jaikman, man it happened to me with all his albums, except for...TRC.

jaikman, what you've described is something that I believe is characteristic of anyone who really likes music -- not the fact that one has to give an album some time to sink into the consciousness before it starts to 'make sense,' but the actual drive and desire to give an album a chance to sink into the consciousness. Obviously, you are like me and probably everyone else who visits prince.org in that you simply like music. Those who really like music are probably less likely to be bitching about an album having only one or two good songs. One listen is rarely ever enough to determine an album's worth, and in some cases the albums that take extra long to absorb can be more rewarding than those that sound great straightaway. I believe "The Rainbow Children" fits squarely in the former category.

Hell's no. When I first heard TRC I hated it, then I listened to it again and I hated it more. It just makes me angry now, so I leave it alone. Luckily I downloaded the whole thing from the net. I won't spend money on Prince anymore.

That happens to me anytime I listen to anyones music for the first time. You have to get used to it.
But, actually I've liked some of Prince's music the first time I heard it, like wow what a song!, but not TRC, I still don't like it.

Hey LesGrind...about New Power Soul??? I hate to say it but that one has definitely grown on me. I HATED it when it came out...every track was such a bore, the only tune I kinda got into was The One. HOWEVER, around this time last year, I went on a road trip with one of my friends and we both had a bunch of CD's in the trunk, and NPS was in there for some unknown reason (I think I grabbed it by mistake). But when we got to a gas station I told him to put some Prince in the player...turned out to be NPS. All I can say is that it was one of the first sunny/warm days in ahwile, I had my top down, and NPS sounded great. Even Freaks on This Side sounded awesome. My buddy was even groovin...and he's a COUNTRY fan! Since then I have been playin' it when I go running, and it sounds great with headphones...especially the title track.

The one Prince CD I STILL can't get warm to is Rave...there are songs on there that make my skin crawl. I haven't touched it in LONG time, so maybe I need blow the dust off of it and give it another try...if NPS can win me over then anything is possible.
