Question about album covers 1000appologies if this has come up already but...
does anyone kno if Prince ever had artistic involvement in his cd covers? like if he physically created one? (think 1999 cover art) i know i know i know...you're prolly thinking "holy shit this chicks gone" but i unno, i love cd art and art itself and i was wondering if any of you knew, or have any POSITIVE input... **runs n hides** [This message was edited Thu Aug 12 19:37:28 2004 by SammiJ]

If anybody would know for sure, I'd say that's your expert-the OrgGallery maestro. I know Prince has had influence in his album covers of course, giving an idea of what he wanted like on the Around the World In a Day cover-both versions are in the Org gallery. Definitely check it out-some great stuff in there.

I wish they could've done two printings or have one on the outside and one on the inside somehow. I keep thinking though he must've had a larger hand in it than we'd think-I remember reading an article after he left Warner Bros. and he made a comment to the artist that helps design the art for NPG Records asking why so many of the same colors were being used, but joking. The guy not surprisingly started using a new color. Saw that over at http://www.princelyrics.c...ticles.asp Not sure which article exactly, but there's some good ones in there. So of course we know he has a big say in the creative control as expected.

Oh, it's the Org. Somebody will know. I'm sure there's somebody that knows what type of shoe lace he likes. At times it's very cool and others it's very very scary.

The only ones that come to mind that he actually did himself are 1999 and Gett Off.
As for the others, I'm sure he's had a say all the way along the line. [This message was edited Fri Aug 13 4:33:40 2004 by SquirrelMeat] .

I seem to remember a q&a with prince on the old Love4OneAnother site where he said that
he had been heavily involved in the cover artwork for all his albums except for one or two. The only one he had absolutely nothing to do with was "The Hits/The B-Sides", I'm sure of that since I remember it vividly. I believe that the other album was "Diamonds & Pearls" but I'm not 100% sure. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I believe that the other album was "Diamonds & Pearls" but I'm not 100% sure. He was certainly involved in wanting a hologram cover for the D & P album: http://www.getitdone.biz/...aging.html Jeff Gold: Creative Imaging Former Executive VP/GM of Warner Bros Records, Jeff Gold is one of the most creative marketing executives in the music industry. Here, Jeff advises a band to have an early and consistent image, and the importance of high quality video and CD packaging. Musician.com: Do you ever have to argue with an artist over their image? Gold: Prince made the Diamonds and Pearls album when I was at Warner Brothers. Prince sent in what he thought was the album cover, which was a photograph of him that I thought was not very exciting. And so I talked to Prince's A&R guy, Bennie Medina, he said, "Why don't you have a meeting with him?" And I thought, "Okay." I was new to Warner Brothers, so Benny, Prince and I sat down in Bennie's office and Bennie said, "Prince, Jeff isn't really crazy about the photograph you've chosen." And there was a knock on the door and Bennie's lawyer came in and grabbed him out of the meeting, and so I am sitting there with Prince, a very intimidating guy whose first question is, "Why don't you like my album cover?" And we spent about an hour and a half talking about what I thought would work better, and what he thought would work better, and there was no meeting of the minds whatsoever. And Prince said, "Let me see something you've done." So I went up to my office and grabbed about 20 CD covers that I had done. And Prince kind of looked through them and said, "I don't like this. This isn't very good. This sucks. This is terrible," with each one worse than the next. And he gets to the last one, which is a Susanne Vega holographic special package that I had done. And he kind of stops and looks at it and goes, "This is great. Why can't I have a hologram?" And coincidentally, I had met with a guy about a month before who had a new holography technology that could be mass-produced. And I said to Prince, "Well, maybe you could have a hologram." He said, "What do you mean?" And I explained this to him. And he kind of looked at my quizzically and said, "Okay, why don't you look into it?" So I thought, "Okay, this has been a two hour meeting going from bad to worse, but at the end there is a little glimmer of hope." And the short story is, in fact, this could be done, and I called Prince and we arranged to do a holographic photo shoot. And we ended up making millions and millions of these holographic album covers, holographic posters, holographic ads, and it attracted an enormous amount of attention in the industry and an enormous buzz at retail. No one had ever done a mass-produced hologram album cover in America, and the album was enormously successful. And Prince was happy and actually wrote me a thank you note, which is kind of an extraordinary thing. It's framed in my office today. . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.
