"There are many musicians who can play all the instruments on their lps if they so choose"
- Well, in this case I have to defend Prince. I dont know Bootsy´s career well (shame on me), but most of these so called multi-instrumentalists only play the basics of basics. I wouldnt say Prince is a master of bass, drums, guitar, piano (the instrument he plays better IMO) or the other 22 instruments (LOL), but he is very good on each one. I never heard Lenny soloing jazzy stuff on piano, or Terence Trent Darby playing slap bass and soloing on drums

Difficult question because people have different talents. Prince of course is talented, but he got that way by studying other artists and then adapting and combining what he learned from them.

It could be argued that James Brown is more talented than Prince. JB's showmanship in his heyday was incredible. Prince was definitely influenced by JB's Famous Flames band with the funk nasty horns, dancing girls, and sexy dance music. JB's music, his wild outfits, wild permed hair styles also influenced Prince. Prince studied JB's music and his style. So who is greater, the teacher or the student?

Same for Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. Prince studied them, the way they played, the way they dressed and then adapted it for himself. Prince was intrigued by the Family Stone as an interracial band. Sly & the Family Stone influenced Prince to create The Revolution as an interracial band that would have blacks and whites, males and female musicians. Prince also learned from observing Stevie Wonder and Al Green.

Prince admired Sly and JB so much that once he had been in the business for a while and had become a respected musician, he was able to add band members from JB's camp (Maceo) and from Sly's camp (Larry Graham) for his own band. It has long been said that Prince is a sponge. He learns from and then absorbs what he admires in others.

So, it could be debated all day and we still wouldn't have an answer to whether Prince is more talented than his teachers -- James Brown, Hendrix, Sly, Stevie, Al Green, and a few others.

Well put...nothing more to be said..

- Ah, Pfunk....dont pretend you didnt understand my point. Of course every artist wants to share his/her art with the bigger number of people, and art entertains people, so every artist is an entertainer....I agree with you
The point is: there are some artists that put their art in front of business, money and limos. Others dont. Cant you see a difference between Duke Ellington and Britney? It´s all about being a creative force, dedication to the music, etc.
About MJ, I honestly think he is a slave from his producers, unlike Prince. MJ has a good voice, he sings well, and wrote some cool songs in the past. But right now, I dont think he takes his music as seriously as Prince. It seems he is more worried about dancing well (some concerts were lip-synched) and making money than actually sitting down and writing music. It´s my point of view

HUH? I don't exude sincerity? I've been practicing!

If you criteria is "being a creative force, dedication to the music, etc." , then you do not know what you are talking about in regards to Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson has been active in music much longer than Prince. With the Jackson5 they've had a string of top selling albums and #1 hit singles, plus worldwide tours. Is that not a life dedicated to music? Plus an animated Sat morning TV cartoon show that featured Black characters as the stars and their own music! You may not like his new music, but even to this day MJ is still a creative force.

You want to argue MJ vs Prince (who by the way has not had a hit in years) go on. That's a "fool's argument", that I won't bother with.

You want to proclaim something about MJ 's media obsessiveness go on, I totally agree with you.

Though I'm hardly a fan of MJ, I know I spent a good time o f my teenage years partying hard to Jackson Five songs and for you to say MJ has "no respect for music" is one of the most asinine things I've ever heard!!

Yep, you're perfectly entitled to you point of view, even if its makes no sense!

BTW: Music is made by professionals to be sold. Duke did it. Brittney, Prince and MJ all do it: sell their songs to make money. Go sit out on your back stoop, invite some friends over and play them a song. That could be music for art's sake, but everybody who does it for a living is looking to be paid for their work, their genius, their inspiration

Knowing that you have not seen Prince Live, how do you know you've heard him doing these things? While it's true you may have identified his style, looks like you're relying on credits that could be scrambled, erroneous or just PR propaganda.

RE BOOTSY: Indeed the shame is on you. You'd actually get a better understanding of Prince if you got deep into Bootsy.

you will get my pointe ,the people U'all are comparing him too only play that one instrument, the aftershows is where he gets off.....Prince on dancing, Please.....can't nobody fuck with us.....Voice.....come on.....This is something I never thought I'd be doing with another Prince fan(s), I've been doing this with other people all my life.....

that sounds a little different from what you have said last. believe me, I am not questioning Prince's genius. I never will. I am questioning people who are so focused on one man and his gifts that they are blind for the others. most of all I am questioning people on the org who are trying to shut up people an posting a critical analysis.

I think we need to keep in mind that most posters, by their own admission, are not really rabid fans of many other musicians. Some readily admit PRINCE is the only thing they listen to. As you read some of these posts just nod your head and pat them on the back. One day their horizons will broaden.

Id like to second the Teena Marie mention...Wonderful Bliss!! Also like to give props to "soul" for putting things in perspective.....

Can I add one more to my list? Aimee Mann....Her song "Nothing Is Good Enough" sorta personifies some people around here. Heed this if you only listen to Prince:

Critics at their worst could never criticize
the way that you do
no, theres no one else, I find,
to undermine a dash of hope
quite like you
and you do it so casually, tooo

Cause nothing is good enough
for people like you
who have to have someone
take the fall
and something to sabotage-
determined to lose it all

I agree that there are a lot of Prince fans (and hardcore fans of others in general) who are ignorant to other artist's contributions. But this has nothing to do with Ricco, because I think I understand his point. But some fans on the org will straight out tell you that "there is no need to listen to anyone else" when it comes to their obsession with Prince. And I say it's an obsession because if you only listen to one group or artist to the exclusion of others then your whole musical scope is extremely narrow - no matter how great that one group or artist is. Different artists bring a different viewpoint and style to the table - unless they're 100% clones of someone else. Like in that thread about Prince's voice, someone was quoted on TV as saying that "no other musician aside from Prince" can convey pain and anguish in their singing. That's just plain, straight up, fanatical bullshit no matter who said it.

Excuse me every one. While i think were all getting caught up in aestices( who can play this better and that better) were forgetting one thing. Its all about the music and the sheer variety that it holds. I love stevie and the beatles annd zappas avant garde meanderings but cohesive style from the age of lets say 21 to 32 Nothing and i mean nothing and nobody compares to PRINCE. Sure he went of the rails in the 90s,save say TGE as u people like to call it. Or how about TRC. Watcha think of that!!!His last record ranks up their with his great ones,of that their is no doubt.I remember a curious tale involving myself, my sister( Who was a year older than myself) and my old man, a Sinatra loving Rascal(he liked a beer!) watching Sign o the times , the single greatest rock performance by anyone in the history of the music biz in my opinion. Transfixed as i was by the brilliance of young P, all the old man could say was at regular intervals,"hang on, theirs no way hes playing that guitar" or my personal favorite "whats he prancing around for doing the splits and catching his microphone. That guy needs a stiff whisky." But even My Da in the end had to concede that hed never seen anything like im before.Hes in his 70s now and he still asks me how P is getting on these days.(Usually its Record company problems or that weird hieroglyph hes adopted, is all he knows about. But i reckon hes one of the few 70 year olds these days who shouthed to me quite recently while i was making some toast " Noel, for chrissakes its When Doves Cry"
