Do you think that Prince puts out "too much" music?

I was watching an imterview with little richard and quincy jones.they both said prince was a great artist, but maybe he shouldn't put out so much music all the time.they said that the public never gets to really ponder and appreciate one album without him constantly putting out more music.basically they were saying that less would be more beneficial to him..... we all know that not every song on every album is that great.....maybe he should hold back a little...what do you think?

I think Prince's doing the right thing with releasing the 4 new CD's this year to the club.
I don't think that he puts out too much music, but I think his music hasn't been promoted the way it should be.
Master P put out many albums in one year, and it didn't hurt his sales. (not that I'm comparing the two in any artistic way)

Prince can't help it. The music just pours out of him & it has to go somewhere (hopefully my stereo).

Well, yeah, perhaps "Emancipation", "New Power Soul" and "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" could have been edited down 2 about 2 cd's worth of kick ass material.

BUT. I still love the other trax. Who cares if they're not instant or timeless classics. They're still cool music and I wouldn't want 2 miss out on any of those trax.

Besides, it all depends on the individual fan.

If I was 2 compile my own 'great' single disc out of all the trax on Emancipation, the song I'd pick might be the songs someone else doesn't like etc etc.

I also don't believe in this '2 much music floods the market' theory.

Think about it. If Prince didn't release any music until 2004 and then dropped a new album, do U think all of a sudden millions of people would start buying that record??

I don't think so.

Another thing about releasing such quantities of music is that U don't play Ur records 2 death. With other artists U'll be listening 2 their album 4 about 2 or somtimes even 3 years before they release a new one.

By the time the new one arrives, U're absolutely sick of listening 2 the previous one.

With Prince, before U actually wrap Ur head around the last disc there is a new one coming at U. Again and Again.

So the sheer volume of music might make it a bit hard 2 work Ur way through it, but in the end it is well worth it.

There's no such thing as 2 much music, not in my book anyway.

4 Instance, I've listened 2 TRC many many times now, but at this point, I'm thinking, hmmmm wait a minute, there are still some trax on "Rave" and from the NPGMC that I never really took in completely.

So I just switch back 2 "Strange But True", "Beautiful Strange", "Van Gogh", "Habibi" etc.

It'll be the same with "One Nite Alone" or "Xenophobia", once U play them 20 times, U're gonna think, hmmm, wait a minute, let's pull out TRC again.....

I could take at least 4 albums per year from Prince. Even if some of the trax aren't 'brilliant'. It's still better 2 get them from Prince on a double album than 2 have 2 get them on boot in bad quality afterwards.

In the 80s,I had no problem with one new album a year. The quality of his music back then was so impressive,it didn't even matter if he was "flooding the market",I still enjoyed each album.

However,in the 90s,it might have been a good idea to slow down a little bit.The funny thing is,Warners always wanted Prince to stop releasing so much music, fearing he would flood the market.Well, now that Prince is "free",he seems to agree with them afterall.New Prince albums don't come out as frequently as they used to.

I don't believe that they come out less frequent because Prince now agrees with Warners, I believe it is due to the fact that he's been searching new directions again lately and obviously wasn't happy enough with "High" so just put the project aside and started work on TRC.

Looks like we'll get more music this year than any year before. 4 new albums? [well, ok there were 4 discs of new music in 1996 as well]

Bring it on.

Personally, I think if Prince writes a song a day, I'd like to have each and every one of those songs taped and sent to me.

However, for the commercial market that just isn't the way to do things.

So, I think what Prince is doing now- sending his biggest fans 4 CDs this year through his music club, and maybe just putting out one CD commercially- well, that's a smart thing to do, and the best way to do things in his case.

I don't think Prince puts out too much music. Look if your a musician and you write all the time why should you wait 2 yrs. to release a cd like a majority of the groups out here today. Are there any group out there today that you can say that everytime they come out you like everything on the cd?? I highly doubt it so why judge Prince the same way even though he puts out more than your normal artist! So I think that at long as it feels good to the Artist then they should put it out!!!!!

IT WOULD B 2MUCH IF HE HAD ONLY ONE STYLE LIKE A BABY FACE OR ERIC CLAPTON OR ANYONE ELSE WHO DONT STRAY 2MUCH, BUT PRINCE IS SO PROLIFIC AND TALENTED,HE HAS SO MANY STYLES ITS HARD 2 GET THEM ALL OUT ON ONE LP UNLESS ITS A DOUBLE ALBUM. LOOK AT THE TRUTH CD. THEN CRYSTAL BALL.THEN RAINBOW.THEN RAVE. THEN EMANCIPATION. ALL ARE DIFFERENT IF HE ONLY GAVE US ONE EVERY NOW AND THEN WE WOULD NOT KNOW HOW GREAT AN TALENTED HE IS SO HE HAS 2 FIND A WAY 2 GET THIS MUSIC OUT.

Well said! I don't like to label things, or put them into categories because music is feeling and art.

However, with the general audiences (those who like the monotony of radio), I bet he could do intro himself to the younger generation by grouping related sounds (R&B, rock, alternative etc...) and releasing them on to separate albums. The problem with this idea is that it is not showing people all sides of P., and what a true artist is all about. Actually, now that I think about it.... That would be a dumb idea!! LOL

if prince was played on 'pop' radio maybe...but he is a creative artist in that he does all these different genres and while we know it's prince, it something to look foreward to because it is different. the people that buy prince's albums are fans and will buy just about anything he puts out there for us. i believe his 'mainstream' pop days are over--not that that is a bad thing--! he has his core fan base--it's consistant, not trendy like britany's etc...

if you read the music that people didn't like b/c it was 'too much' it is a smaller number than the same music people did like.

also, no one makes someone buy a cd...

Ms

I hear what they're saying but I disagree.

A person like Prince just needs to produce, create and get it out of his system. Of course there will be hits and misses and some stuff that is just out there, but the btm line is I feel its very important that whatever Prince comes out with deserves to be hrd one way or another.

He is someone I am willing to hear everything he had a musical thought or inspiration or creation about.

If he called me and said, "Listen to this", no matter what time it was, I'd listen to it and prob say, "Cool,or Interesting or 'Wow' 'nice man', 'can u make me a copy of it?" lol.

I think the commercial world underestimates peoples ability to buy and dig and understand the whole process of what a artist is putting out, even if it takes a while to get into each song, I def want them from this man, because he brings so much to the table from jumpstreet anyway.

I havent hrd all the audio tracks he's released thru the club yet, but eventually I'm convinced I will, just like eventually Im convinced I will hear every boot thang that is out here I havent hrd yet. All in good time.

Even if everything he puts out is not greatness, Prince is one of those people I got to check in with to see just where his head is at lately cuz its always gonna be something new and differetn and creative like a Stevie Wonder or MJ(when he's in his right mind, and makin good music) or whoever else-these r people that r on my 'must check in with ' list!

peace!

Yes.... and no....

As far as having commercial success goes, definitely YES.
The general population cannot keep up with a constant stream of new music and will soon lose interest. You have to be able to 'comeback' with a slightly new style (and look) to keep the music consumers interested, and you can't 'comeback' if you never go away. Like it or not, the fact is that the charts are decided through the buying habits of music consumers, not music lovers. As a fam of Prince's music, personally I can't get enough music, and am eagerly awaiting 4 CD's of music this year alone through NPGMC.

NO, I don't think Prince puts out too much music. It is one thing I like about him. I hate those bands that put out an album and than hide under the cushions for 6 years and than the're on every talk show under the sun, saying here we are again, buy our new cd.

No, not at all. Of course, I may be a bit biased, but Prince can never put out too much music. It used to be pretty common for an artist to put out an album every year. Compare Prince's output to someone like D'Angelo, who's a great artist, but could be better if he put out more music. If D' put out as much music as R. Kelly, he would have a much bigger impact on the music biz.

Prince does release too much music...as in too much crappy music. In the end it's the quality that counts.

There will always be albums that will be overlooked, whether he releases four albums a year or one every four years. That's not the issue.
